DBSOs never fail to look odd in their own endearing little way! I always found the arrangement of the Up platforms at Colchester to be really interesting, with the two staggered so that the one preceding the trap points later merges into the second.

Colchester (North) station has 6 platforms. Platform 1 for Clacton. Platform 2 the Down Main for Norwich. Platform 3 the Up Main, from which Soi videoed. Platform 4 is the recessed line from Clacton to allow slower trains to be overtaken. Platform 5 is a north facing bay for Walton-on-Naze trains via Colchester Town (St Botolphs). Platform 6 is behind where Soi is standing and forms a south facing bay. There is also an Up Passenger Loop, which the ECS from Harwich normally waits in, and a line round the back of the depot, but in front of the Power Signal Box.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Well, well, comrade. I was with LTS Rail for most of my BR career. Couldn't get a transfer to Colchester so I left BR and got a job on The Big Breakfast (nothing exciting, I was their HR officer). Loving the videos, anything AC electrics, London Buses or Essex. If you want to email me, I'll send you a copy of my BR fleet list project, only 1975 -1981 done so far, it's a WIP. nonlondoner@yahoo.co.uk.

Another great bit of footage. Brilliant to see the 302/9 EPU. Nice to the Mk1 RBR mised in a Mk2 set too. It's interesting how the pair o4 37's on the Freightliner swapped to the Up line. Did you see where it went?

It was going to Felixstowe, probably sent bang road to go around another train. It would have gone back to the down road the other side of the station as there is no bi-directional working to Ipswich.

They are okay providing the TDM does not deconfigure. I have known drivers sit in a large bin liner to keep dry. When it rains hard it comes through the front door ! Another interesting fact is when they were fitted with cow-catchers (after the Polmont crash) when they were moved to Anglia, they were fitted with different cow-catchers. Presumably Anglia Friesians are less hairy than Highland Cattle ! (How to start an urban myth....)

Interesting variety; the 321s were about, but also 309s, and Met-Cam DMUs. And doubleheaded 37s on freightliners. That parcels train at the end hardly looks profitable though.

The first Up working from Colchester on a Saturday used to be the 04.00 which was formed of a 4 car 309. It was a sort of staff special as it stopped at Gidea Park (on the Up Main - almost unheard of), Romford, Seven Kings (for Ilford Car Sheds) and Stratford. 309s are comfy and ride well, but are slow accelerating.

Thanks for another interesting video! I'm seeing things I haven't seen anywhere else except in model railway promotions, such as the DBSO's and the AEC powered railcar set. Even though the footage is poor compared to today, it is still so worthwhile! Incidentally , what video is the '38 Tube Stock scene from that you are using as your closing scene? Thanks from the Colonies! (east coast of Australia!)
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus5 жыл бұрын
I'm pleased you like the vid. The 38 shot at the end is 'the parting shot' to upload the end cards over without ruining the end of the film. It is a section from my very first upload here kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKSqhWOqlphjiMU. Before i got a video camera in 1985 i had been using cine film. £5.00 for 5 mins of silent film, a video tape cost £7.00 for 3 hours with sound! I could suddenley film the whole length of all trains and never run out of tape! Compared to cine the quality was superb, and when DVD came out i transfered the videos to that medium. Now they have been converted to MP4 as well. While not as good as modern DVD cameras it's still good quality (my vid cam took E180 full sized tapes so no loss of quality by transfering from small tapes to large) although loses a bit when uploaded to KZbin. Keep watching though, i have lots more transport vids to upload, happy viewing from the northern hemisphere!
