British Rail Regional Railways 1995-Chester with Class 37, 47, 153, 507 & 508

Some scenes at Chester one morning in June 1995. We have loco hauled action with class 37s on Regional Railways Express workings along the North Wales Coast, the Crewe Test Train passing through with two class 47s at the front and a 37 on a ballast working. Unit wise there is a class 153 and on the Merseyrail both class 507 & 508 EMUs appear, the 508 still in BR blue & grey. That 153 was trying to emulate a heritage DMU. You might expect some clag as they age, but it was only about 6 years old then.

I liked seeing the 507 disappearing into the branch. Sounds just like Sydney's now withdrawn suburban S sets.

Next year the Class 507 and Class 508 will be a memory because Merseyrail have got Class 777 coming

The North Wales Coast line was always a Heaven for loco hauled trains I read once that it was using Class 47's until as recently as 2006.

I was still driving 47s and 57s on the coast then. We worked 47s on some of the Euston to Holyheads,and a daily diagram from Coventry. 57s were used on a daily diagram from Manchester to Llandudno and Holyhead using aircon mk2s. I.left the railways shortly after.

I spent a large part of the 1990s chasing the loco hauled workings along the coast. There was a Sunday Holyhead Inter-City working that was a hauled set (rather than an HST) that used a Res 47 along the coast.....

Must've been pretty shortly after the electrification of the track from Hooton. Always remember having to change onto the old dmu.

Yes, the DMUs were still running a shuttle until around 1994 when the Merseyrail Electrics service finally ran through. It's a good way to get to Liverpool from North Wales.....
