One thing the governments could do is build regional labs and subsidise testing of soils so that you can apply the correct fertiliser to the land for the crops you are planning on planting or so you can plant a more appropriate crop for the soil type you have.

Very true. More investment should be focused on soil tests to have fertilizer specific to the type of soil and its pH

@@AfricaFarming also consideration should be put into crop rotation plus planting a cover crop such as grass or clover after harvesting which can then be ploughed back in before planting your next main crop.
