Thank you, I missed an entire first year worth of notes and found this which is part of agriculture, thank you so much!

One major problem with this video is that you show a soil profile with a very clear white E horizon - horizon of eluviation - and you indicate that it is a B horizon. E horizons form under trees and forests and they are areas with high sand content and low OM and low nutrients - accounting for the white color.

+Mary P Thank you Mary P for making that distinction, but I don't know if it is a major problem. The E horizon is sometimes lumped in with the A horizon, where then the A horizon is split into A1 and A2. I think for the scope and sequence of this course (NYS Regents Earth Science) which the videos are geared towards the concept of knowing that the soil profile changes in depth due to a number of factors is most important. My pedology skills are not the best, and I do find it to be a tough area of study. Thanks again.

Disclaimer-Doing this for an University English class. Don't take this to heart. Ignore it if you can. This source represents bad information being spread to students. This is too shallow of an explanation for soil formation. The 5 mechanisms for soil formation such as parent material, climate, biota, topography, and time are poorly explained. It's hard to explain pedogenesis, but it's necessary to use more than a 4 minutes to explain something this complex. I would not recommend this for a college students trying to understand soil formation.

The whitish horizon is an excellent example of the E horizon, a layer in which eluviation has occurred, it is NOT the B horizon. The B horizon is below the E, and is where illuviation has occurred. Must question this "teachers" credentials?

Hello Rich, thanks for the feedback and the information. I am by no means at all a soil expert, and find it to be a tough area within the sciences. But for the scope of NYS Earth Science and my students it is more important to realize there are distinct layers within the soil formed various processes. I hope you can understand this and forgive me of this mistake.

Now I feel bad, hope I didn't seem too harsh. Glad for your understanding and your dedication to teaching. I too am not a Soil Scientist, just an Environmental educator...a 'jack of all and master of none'. Props to you and any one who accepts criticism and then uses that constructively. I'm pleased to be corrected and or educated too. I do tell kids "I don't know, and or try to work it out to, here is what I think" I then research for the correct information. It is wonderful when we can help each other continually become better.

I like teaching concepts, as they can be applied to a broad spectrum. e.g. While it is nice to know the binomials of plants, it is more important to know why and how they live where they do, and what they do. One can then infer how another plant, is what it is and why, and how it works where it is. Pretty cool when a student puts it all together and gets it.
