I think I heard planting alfalfa might help the soil. I love when you walk the walk on the property, in and out the buildings. It is huge! Can’t wait to see the chickens!

Yes, there are quite a few cover crops that can help. Researching that now so that I can get one in before the fall.

Dig a ditch from the culvert to the pond to direct the water from your planting area.
@laurahiggins4712 Жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness, I hope Cody is OK. Since the county installed a culvert that causes water to damage your property, maybe the county can help fix the problem.

May want to consider researching the creation and use of swales above the new garden. The entire farm looks like it could greatly benefit from slowing water down and giving it time to infiltrate into the ground. It will reduce the dampness in the new bed, reduce runoff of soil and nutrients and dry up some of the wetness near the pond. Many benefits of creating swales. Some great KZbin videos that would give you some great tutorials which will give you a general idea of what to do. While swales are normally dug on the natural contour with the soil put on one side of the dug area, then planted, you could try just using that extra piles of soil

Still can't figure out why you bought the farm. A huge one at that. It needs tremendous work for some time. At least the dogs and the kids have more room for fun. I do hope Utube provides funds for you so work can be easier. I am wondering if there is a bit of crazy on you two (🙃) I'll be watching as the plot-literally-thickens. And I cannot miss the hilarity between the two of you.

It’s the most scenic plot of land we’ve found locally to grow on and allow me space to grow my daylilies, vegetables and cut flowers. We don’t have that kind of land at our home property, we’re nestled in the woods. The location is great for a small business and you can’t go wrong investing in antique barns and real estate. 😊 We literally fell in the love with place as soon as we saw it. It just felt perfect.

I would just plant it up and see what happens! Laura from garden answer had her best first year planting on raw property. All the nutrients are in the soil and no bug pressure but the second year the bugs started finding them. I would till up many other areas and plant cover crop and get it ready for following years.

I agree with some of the other suggestions to redirect the water. We created a swale in our yard on a very small scale. It was a lot of work to dig in clay for sure. Yours would be a very large scale job and definitely would need equipment for that long run. The other thing you need to do; as you had mentioned, is to get the field covered now that the ground has been tiled as this likely brought weed seeds to the surface. I have super heavy clay soil in my yard and I learned about a service called Chipdrop. You can sign up for free arborist wood chips and get a good portion of bed covered. You would need to wait until next season to use the portion you cover; but it would break down into a nice compost over time. I've used Chipdrop a few times; they drop ~ 20 cu yards each time and it helped with keeping down the mud in our rainy season too. I see you have some wood chips already in a pile to start. Wood chips are sooo much easier to move around than compost.

You have to fight the urge to “just start planting” as some have suggested. I own a little farm/nursery called Pine Gully Gardens on Galveston Bay in the small town of Seabrook, TX. When I bought the property, I was told that it had previously been fully wooded and I assumed that it would have beautiful, Riparian soil. Wrong! It turns out that most of the trees had been knocked down by Hurricane Ike several years previous. The owner decided to take advantage of the situation, and raise the property by bringing in 18” of clay and packing it in with a dozer. It was pure garbage and hard as a rock. We have a tree service not too far away and I inquired as to whether they would dump their woodchips on our property. They were ecstatic! They were having to pay to dump them at the time!. Over the next year, I had them cover the areas of the property that I wanted to improve. I didn’t even knock down the piles. I just let them decompose. After 18 months, I had the most beautiful “black gold” that you have ever seen. It may seem like a setback now, but you will thank yourself later for taking the time to get your soil and drainage correct before you start. You guys are knocking it out of the park! Wishing you the best! God bless…. Jess Pine Gully Gardens Seabrook, TX

Thanks! We did have the excavator create a redirect for the culvert excess and that has helped immensely already. Plus having the detest season of our life doesn’t help lol. I am for now planting by hand and amending the holes 12-18” for planting. Not an instant fox but will get us through the season. Once we can afford to really get the amount of compost we need in, things will be SO much easier!

I love seeing you all working and enjoying your new farm property. I’ve seen other channels that give them a tractor to use and advertise for it. I don’t know how that works, but all your work would be less backbreaking if you had a tractor. Wes wondering if you could lay a French drain down to divert water.
@sandypowell-b8k Жыл бұрын
get someone in to tile the field, it will take years to amend the soil to the degree you need. Farmers do it all the time, it’s not that expensive

Let that machine do the work instead of you back!! Stand up straight and just keep it on track and let the wheels move the thing,😂 but I’ll say it sure is funny hope Cody is alright. That should be some of the best soil ever since it was a far yard. I think just get the drainage correct and you should be ready to go. Don’t get discouraged it just takes time until you have the right tools👍😎❤️

Is this the way you learned how to plant asparagus? I have seen it different: make little mounts and set the asparagus plant on top spreading the roots around the mound. ?
@jgg7377 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you make a mound, with the trenches on the sides. Place the asparagus roots spread out over the Mon day Sysco many inches apart, then cover over and also make sure you fertilize and keep all the weeds out , otherwise they will take over and you will loose them. After 3 years you can start harvesting the small young tender shoots . If you wait to long then they become too hard and woody. I hop the way she did it turns out okay! Also, if you are going to have a farm then a tractor with many implements are a must have! I know you don’t do sponsorships but. I have seen other KZbin channels get so many things for free! Greenhouses, tractors, etc. Do it Brian. Reach out to them and tell them you have a KZbin channel and will do reviews and get that Stuff you need! Lol
