Soil type test - Do at home soil test, no special equipment needed

An easy do at home method to work out what type of soil you have, clay, loamy, sand.
What proportion of sand, silt and clay does your soil contain?
You will need:
- 1 glass jar with straight sides
- water
- detergent
- garden trowel
- ruler
- calculator
- soil
Method:
Scrape back any mulch covering the soil, dig down and add soil to the jar, up to 1/3 full.
Top the jar up with water, add detergent. Close the jar and shake vigorously.
Wait 1-2 minutes - measure and mark with texta level of sand
Wait 1-2 hours - measure and mark the level of silt
Wait 24-48 hours - measure and mark the level of clay
Calculate the proportion of each soil component (sand, silt and clay)
Compare with the soil type triangle to determine your soil type.
