Hi Karen, thanks for this video. 👍 Have you had any problems with the roots of the Bacon being so close to the house? All the literature says avocado roots are invasive especially on full sized trees. What are your thoughts? I have a sheltered spot with a large shed and foundation alongside and gravel driveway in front. I’m aiming for full sized trees with a view of keeping them around 3metres? Like yours.

Hi @cuttinglooselivinglife I have no problems with my tree roots so far. Which literature claims avocados have invasive roots? Avocados, (like citrus) have a lot of surface feeder roots which will not damage buildings. Their natural habitat is usually rainforests, with deep well drained soil. My tree is in improved heavy clay, which most likely inhibits its root spead.

Gives me hope that I can grow an avocado tree in our cold winter climate! Do you have just the one tree? Ie. they’re not self pollinating are they?
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916 28 күн бұрын
Thye can even fruit in Tasmania. I have only one mature tree, so it is self-pollinating, yes, and this weems to happen best in cool climates. My theory is that the female flowers don't fade quickly when its cooler and so are still around to be pollinated when the male flowers open. Some varieties have female flowers in the morning and male in the afternoon, the other group of avocados has male flowers in the morning and female in the afternoon. Either way, cool weather keeps the flowers around long enough for the insects to do their work!

When you say the vine can be trained, are you staking or trellising? How is it best managed? Thanks for the video, very helpful 👍
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916

Hi @cuttinglooselivinglife, the vines are interwined through a metal trellis if they are still felxible enough to do so, or they can also be tied onto a fence or metal trellis with soft biodegradeable ties. That way the ties can be composted with the vines later. Vines can also be trained along or between strands of fencing wire pulled taut between posts. This helps keep the vine at a height to make picking easier and prevent unwanted layering which may occur if the vine trails on the ground.

How long for each new offshoot (from the middle, not the base) to fruit? I'm trying to keep mine from getting too large and crowding/shading adjacent garden plants, but don't want to get no fruit for years if I cut it halfway back. Is it best to prune hard just after fruit drop?

Hmm, how much space do you have for your feijoa? These are really the minimum space you can occupy with these plants, they get heaps bigger - such as a tree in my backyard (must do video). Yes prune after fruiting, I find they do fruit well in these circumstances, but I don't cut back to bare wood too often. If so, it just takes a year or so to get fruit again. Cheers

Gypsum is calcium sulfate. Sulfate is sulfer. Sulfer lowers your PH. Might want to look it up before you give false information.
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916 Ай бұрын
OK, let's sort this out as gypsum is a really useful product. Let's look at chemistry. When elements are combined with each other, they change and have different properties to the original elements, such as calcium or sulfur. But don't take my word for it, here's Iowa State University crops.extension.iastate.edu/encyclopedia/gypsum-old-product-new-use#:~:text=Gypsum%20is%20the%20neutral%20salt,not%20increase%20or%20decrease%20acidity. In the first paragraph, these lines explain it "Gypsum is the neutral salt of a strong acid and strong base and does not increase or decrease acidity. Dissolving gypsum in water or soil results in the following reaction: CaSO4·2H2O = Ca2+ + SO42- + 2H2O. It adds calcium ions (Ca2+) and sulfate ions (SO42-), but does not add or take away hydrogen ions (H+). Therefore, it does not act as a liming or acidifying material." Hope that helps!

@maxpain7197 Ай бұрын
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916 Ok your right. Sheesh... I do use it every year in my garden and has really helped the soil. I did notice that it did not decrease the PH. And have been adding elemental sulfer to correct the problem. It has definitely helped with my clay like soil since it sits more on the alkaline side. Along with ammonium sulfate.
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916
@karensutherland-edibleeden1916 Ай бұрын
@@maxpain7197 Yes, our clay soil in northern suburbs of Melbourne tend to be alkaline too, but I've found from adding lots of homemade compost over many years the pH has corrected to neutral (compost often being acidic). Good question! This is harder, you can incorporate coarse sand to open up the soil, and also use compost, which is good for every type of soil. It is harder. Raised beds or raising the soil level in mounds for plants sensitive to bad drainage such as citrus, is often helpful I've found.

Thanks for this. I'm in Lilydale (Melbourne) and have quite difficult clay soil which is very waterlogged due to the wet summer we've had. I plan on planting some water loving natives such as Melaleucas, but before doing so, want to prepare the soil. Is it OK / is there a need to dig the compost / gypsum into the top layer of already wet clay? I seen advice that digging up wet clay can compact it further and cause more issues. Hoping that by adding the gypsum and compost, that would counteract that anyway?

Sorry for slow reply. Refer to my other videos - ESSENTIAL INFO!! *How to plant grape vine or other ...etc and also *How to plant well with root pruning techniques *Staking young plants... It's true that working/digging in very wet soil can damage the structure, so we have always avoided working in soil at these times. It might be best to wait till drier weather in early spring as the weather warms, to avoid soil damage and plant waterlogging. When you can plant, the short answer is that you can just improve the soil in planting hole areas as outlined below, and spread gypsum and good organic mulch such as tree surgeon mulch over (no need to dig in, but do remove weeds first of course) the rest of the soil and let these additives gradually improve your soil. Also here's some info I just sent to another KZbin fan. "Never dig holes in clay soil that are deeper than your plant's root ball, as you will achieve what we call the 'kitchen sink effect' where the hole has water in the bottom of it and this can cause your plant to have 'wet feet', but always dig the holes twice as wide as the plant's root ball, to allow the roots to spread and establish quickly.
