I try to only plant as many seeds as I'm comfortable with handling lol. I had 3 tomato plants in one of those fresh step buckets and I didn't want to thin them, they got huge together, then one day they all wilted. I saved two of them and repotted the second one. For carrots I'll take my craft tweezers and wrap them with tape to prevent damage and I'll premake tiny holes to transplant the tiny sprouts. That took a while but I got a good crop.

I use sifted Happy Frog potting mix. It removes chunks of wood, larger perlite and other debris that the seeds might stick to instead of getting in contact with the soil.

I planted some Rudbeckia/Black Eyed Susan in my garden a couple of years ago - it's the most gorgeous, vibrant, prolific plant - always covered in bees and butterflies. Isn't fussy - drought tolerant. And each year it's spread and grown bigger and more beautiful. Produces some nice seed heads at the end of the season as well - highly recommend.

Due to time constraints, I decided not to plant any of our Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes last season (2023). I was pleasantly surprised to find several volunteer Sweet 100s come up in one of our beds where evidently my husband had thrown some that had not made it the year before. I just love volunteer plants that decide to seed themselves. I also got a couple of pumpkin plants this past year also, what a treat.

My mother in law loves the Big Mama tomato, but last summer all of her seedlings of that variety failed. Surprisingly, while I was tending her garden for her I found about 6 volunteers and immediately staked them up. They did really well, and I made sure to save seeds for her this year.

@@suzycowan5072sweet 100 cherry tomato - is hybrid. Volunteer plants from hybrid parents might not look and taste as the parent plant. If you want same taste, must try to plant from the hybrid seeds again.

@@mamokamika4212 Supersweet100 offspring seem to do very well for some people. I’ve even heard claims that they were sweeter or more flavorful than plants from the F1 seed. The fruit from saved seeds seem so true to type that it prompted me to investigate whether it really was a hybrid. Sometimes the lost trait in successive generations may not be taste; it may be disease resistance or physical appearance. I always save seeds from hybrid plants and will grow at least one each season to see how it turns out.

Agree on using potting mix for winter sowing. Seed starting mix is usually sterile (no nutrients) so if you have to keep plants for any length of time in those containers before you can plant them, they will likely need to be fertilized. Great video Roxanna!

Yes. I heard another gardener on KZbin mention that. Use regular potting soil for outdoor winter seed sowing. I have used my salad spinner 🤭 to sift out the bigger chunks such as twigs. That was fun.

I've used milk jug containers for winter sowing years ago. It was awesome. I haven't done any sowing this year because one day we have winter temps, and the next, we have spring/summer temperatures. I love the totes idea. Great video, and thank you!❤️🌷

This plastic bin method looks great but I think I’ll go with the jugs. For one thing, I don’t have clear bins with clear lids laying around and I don’t want to buy them new only to drill holes all over the bottoms and lids. I also do not have square little nursery pots that would pack neatly into a box. But if I see a clear plastic bin with lid on somebody’s sidewalk on garbage day, it’s on, baby, even if it is cracked. I will duct tape it and make a mini-greenhouse for my round 4” nursery pots. Thank you so much for the tips, especially regarding water during dry winter spells.

I've been saving all the clear water jugs and Kitty litter jugs to start other small ones in they're awesome you can we actually fit a whole 6 pack in them. Getting usto 8b as so many tjings can be sown so early. I sell my extras at the local farmers market.

I love all the varieties! So so excited for your garden space this year. My first year WS i ended up with 6 plants and lots of algae and draining issues. But thats ok because i learned so much in our climate with so much rain/snow and not much sun. I saw another YT vid where someone lived in a similar climate and she really had to double the drainage holes and even make larger angled slashes around the bottom of her containers. That worked for me. So the next year i over compensated and had an incredible amount of plants. i couldn't believe it and decided to experiment and plant them in diff conditions in my garden to see where they grew the best. Huge learning curve. I am hooked! This year i have planned less and trying new varieties.Def had to remember that being in a zone 5 is completely diff than the zone 6 or 7 who have healthy large seedlings earlier and mine need more time to get there.Perennial Rudbeckia seem to germinate later like they do in nature and did really well. This will be 2nd year and i cant wait to see the blooms. I would like to start tomatoes , indetermiate , but in large pots. Love that you showed your larger containers and how that could be easier than milk jugs that i did. Thanks for another great vid!!!

The library had a demo from the master gardener last night. Very interesting. We used milk jugs. I’m hoping it works. I like your storage container better. Maybe I’ll do my leafy greens this way. That is a great tip for using the mesh tray inside! I've not had the best luck with winter sowing with only a few exceptions. My best success also came from sowing directly in 2.5" pots (but no covers) and these did amazing compared to the jugs so I'm doing a bunch of test pots (1 per variety) as well as sowing indoors for insurance. I've not had an issue with critters but speeding up germination and growth would be great, so I may pick up a bin to see how that goes. Great video!

Thank you for a very informative video (without background music!) Using the totes with individual containers solves the problem of separating seedlings that do not like root disturbance, like lupines. I couldn't figure out how to get around that using the gallon jugs. I also garden in zone 5.

Hello, I’m new to your channel and I thought I would jump on my phone and leave a message right away. I love your explanation about winter sewing I often watch gardening videos all day long on the TV Roku device, which doesn’t give me the opportunity to comment so often I find channels that are absolutely charming, and because of that, I don’t get the opportunity to tell them I decided I’m not doing that this time I have watched a few of your videos. I absolutely love them. I was on a search for winter sewing some flowers, since I seem to always fail at that, because when it comes time to get Garden vegetables in I kind of forget about the flowers. This year I thought I would try winter sewing and I’m so glad I found this video. I am in the mountains of North Carolina zone 6B the new guidelines says were now in 7A but I don’t believe that at all I error on the side of zone 5. I look forward to watching more videos, and what you have to come happy gardening.

OMG, Roxanna! This is a game changer for me. I haven't had success starting seeds either method, indoors or out. Those sealed bins are perfect. Last year, I used berry containers, lettuce "clamshell" containers and critters or wind tossed them around. Another advantage to winter seed sowing, you don't have to babysit the seedling sown indoors by moving them outdoors everyday. No matter how I planned for last avg. frost date in my area it's really subject to that season's weather conditions. I saw MI Gardener do something similar. He cleared off snow from his raised bed and planted seeds directly onto the soil. I think he planted carrots. Then turned over the bin as a dome, secured it with rocks and it also had drilled holes for rain to get in.

I saw that video of MI gardener and I have been wanting to do something but my beds are not ready, I add compost once the weather allows it and it’s still frozen outside, but that’s basically why I have a hoop house set up on one of my beds, so much fun trying new things!

Awesome video with great relatable advice Roxanna! This is my 3rd year with winter sowing and I grow any seed that tickles my fancy and I've had great luck with it for the most part. I've bought all kinds of containers as well as used salad, muffin, take out containers, etc. for the seed starting (as long as they had lids so I didn't have to cut and tape). I ignore them for the most part unless precipitation is low and when we get frost later on.

What a great method for winter sowing I’ve got to try! I always use gallon milk jugs-(distilled water actually) for winter sowing. I share your disdain for thinning seedlings. In fact, I have transplanted perennial sprouts from viability testing into winter sowing jugs with some success here in zone 6B. The only problem I experienced was last year when temps got into the low 20’s several nights in a row. Otherwise the seedlings survive. This year I’m not pre-sprouting though as it is time consuming and risky. So I just turn my head tossing out those sprouts.

This year I'm using my hoop house that I usually grow my pumpkins on. That changed my life. I'm covering it with 7 mill greenhouse film and I'm starting as much as I can in there I'm gonna give it a try I lost so much stuff last year I don't know if it was a crazy Storm that blew through but we woke up and everything was dead in the garden so I'm using row covers this year and I'm gonna grow under as much cover as I can.

It was wonderful to see all the plants that you’re growing. Winter sewing in zone 9A Will be a challenge for me I don’t know much about it I am just starting. I don’t have room for shelves and containers and lights. I may look into winter sowing for zone 9A. Thank you for that video it was very interesting. I’m in Tx, zone 8a, and I did winter sowing this year. I did a bunch of poppy seeds and echinacea seeds, and so far, I’ve had 100% germination in all my containers I’ve planted. I know I’m not as warm as u r, but just wanted to give u some encouragement that it does work well in a warmer zone. I forgot to mention that I stratified all my seeds first bc we just don’t get cold enough here, and both poppies and echinacea germinate better if they’ve been stratified first. Happy gardening! 🌻🍃

@doowopshopgal I did mine in plastic clear water jugs bc I already had them from when the main city water supply line broke and the entire city was w/o water. I cut them and made a hinge in the area of the handle, put drainage holes in the bottom, filled them with potting soil, planted the seeds, watered them in with a mister so as not to disturb the seeds, taped them back together, labeled them, left the top lid off, and put them outside on the south side of my house bc it gets the most sun. I started the seeds 1/21/23. I've checked on them once a week since then bc we don't get a lot of rain (and hardly ever have snow) here just to make sure they haven't dried out, and they've been fine. All jugs have germinated, and I planted 8 jugs. I've nvr done it how Roxana showed today, but did what several other channels have shown in the jugs, and it works well here. Hope this helps!

@@loricawley54 Well this sounds very interesting I do have a south facing window and I don’t have jugs but I do have plastic containers. The coldest it has gotten here is like 26 for a couple of days and then it goes back up into the 50s I’m going to try this same method I can start them maybe in December since we are a little warmer or maybe in November even. I would just have to sacrifice my time and some seeds just to see what works for me but I am so glad for this community and thank you for your help. I am new at Gardening and I really want to make this work. I used to love to plant flowers but now it’s more sensible and sustainable to grow food.

Make sure the potting soil you have has compost or fertilizer in it. Many don't have much in terms of nutrients for winter sowing. Seems the only thing with compost or food in them anymore are organic or miracle grow so you may have to add some yourself. Stay away from anything with moisture control of any kind. They tend to cause root rot unless it's a dry location.

MiracleGro’s moisture control mix does not create root rot because it protects against both overwatering and underwatering. The crystals absorb excess moisture then release water back into the soil if it dries out.

After watching your video a month ago I started 3 different types of lettuces, 2 different types of peas, spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and strawberries on February 27th in zone 6b. I'm pretty happy with the resullts, after 2 weeks all vegetable seeds were germinating except for the strawberries. Thank you for the video

That’s funny because some sources recommended the cheapest potting soil for winter sowing because the high-end stuff sometimes has more fertilizer than is ideal for sprouts and seedlings. You need a decent middle ground - somewhere between the sterile seed-starter mix and the fertilizer-heavy potting soil suited for established plants.

I like the idea of using that tote, I have tried milk jugs but didn’t love it. I also garden in Zone 5 Illinois. I also had to look up the source of your colorful pots.

This is such an easy setup, far easier for me than it is with jugs and bottles. I’d rather just try and recycle them. I got a few large bins discounted because they were already damaged. Since I’m going to drill holes anyway, that worked perfectly. But now I’m going a little overboard with the amount of plants 😅

The one year I did the milk jugs I had zero results loo, but I think it was mainly human error, I never water them, the year I did these little guys we had a very warm spring, so the cold never really showed up for my seeds and I had OK results, the fix for that would be starting them sooner but I have great results with seeds indoors that I might just skip this WS this coming year.

Roxana, did you moist the soil? I think I’m going to try this this year with a few things. Not only I do not have space indoors, but also the price of power for the lights has skyrocketed in Europe since the war started 😱 Great video, as usual 🙏😊

I did a bit, I don’t like to work with dry soil because that stuff always flies everywhere, it’s not completely soaked but just enough moisture to hold it together.

When deciding what soil to use, we have to remember that a seed starting mix does not have any nutrients in it at all. God gives each seed just enough nutrients within its casing to help it come up to just its first set of true leaves and then it is up to us to feed them and give them the nutrients they need, often times we must also up-pot the seedlings into larger containers until they are finally moved into the garden. But when using a potting mix that already has all of those extra nutrients in it, then we are able to just leave it alone, and let them grow the way God intended until they are then ready to be moved into the garden. Using potting mix is so much less work for the gardener, and not so shocking to the seedlings.

Every tomato seed I ever started, grew… I stopped over seeding those. Tomatoes and basil seem like the most reliable germinators… although I’ve probably only started about thirty varieties of seeds in my life time.

I don't winter sow my tender warm season plants like cosmos until mid March here in zone 6a. My reason is because of out crazy weather that can be warm enough for them to germinate and then freezing enough to kill them. I have to watch and cover them when the temps dip too far after they germinate. I love winter sowing and have had 100% success.

Using the milk jugs you dont have to transplant out so fast. Since spring weather is so unpredictable i feel like bigger plants will be more stable in the rain and wind once theyre planted out. I will be also doing seeds just like you did in this video too. Thank you for bring us along.

Good point. The roots also have more soil depth to work with in jugs. I’m also thinking that when seedlings start to put out more leaves, they would be less crowded in the jugs (assuming you spaced seeds appropriately). Furthermore, we usually put seeds of a single type of plant in each jug, so they grow more or less at the same pace. With a bunch of little pots packed closely together in a bin, some plants will grow faster and taller than others and either shade them out or crowd them out.

But I do know that things have definitely gone up from last year, based on what I’ve seen from what we have been getting this year. Great video, I am going to be doing my winter sowing this weekend. After winter sowing in milk/water jugs, I wouldn’t trouble myself with storing them. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I reduce by not buying additional things (bins and mini-pots). I reuse by putting the jugs to a new purpose. I still end up recycling the jugs the same way I would have done if I had not reused them. It doesn’t matter that they are no longer fully intact. In fact, reusing then recycling the jugs also reduces my need for storing the containers and gives me more storage space for other stuff. In Autumn, I can start rescuing and collecting jugs again.
