For Soke Inoue Yoshimi (Rika Usami's legendary master), having good technique means knowing how to use the body. Repetition without proper technique may improve fitness, however it doesn't improve the technical execution. When performing upper body techniques such as punches and blocks, the muscles around the scapula (shoulder blade), clavicle and humerus must be relaxed to achieve maximum power. While beginners tend to focus their attention on their hands, more advanced practitioners should concentrate on the origin point of these movements, i.e. their shoulders.
All movements performed by the human body (and, therefore, all techniques in Karate) are combinations of rotations around different joints. For example, a tsuki (punch) may look like a linear movement, but it is actually the combination of 3 rotations around the shoulder, elbow and radioulnar joints. To maximise power, all these circular movements should be performed without interruption, from start to finish of the technique. To unlock the shoulder rotation, this joint should be moved slightly anteriorly rather than posteriorly during the execution of upper body techniques.
To increase power and kime, Soke Inoue explains how to perform synchronised counter-rotations of the arms relative to the pelvis, a concept he denotes as "whip" (10:15). Depending on the technique, counter-rotations of the arms can occur on the transverse or on the coronal plane. However, the pelvis should only rotate on the transverse plane.
In the last part of this video, Soke Inoue demonstrates how all the above concepts can be applied to the kata Suparimpei, performing some sequences from the kata and the correspondent bunkai.

This is the real deal, and I’m glad that it is being freely shared. This style of movement and power generation is integral to most Okinawan Karate styles that are derived from Southern Chinese systems. Regrettably , it is often missing from systems that used to have it. I hope people watching this will study this video deeply, and try to catch what he is doing. This man seems to be a great teacher, and to move as he does at his age is a testament to the effectiveness of his teaching for both joint health and power generation.

The body mechanics and concepts this man is teaching are used in some Southern Chinese styles. I feel that this way of moving and striking is getting more and more rare in most styles of Karate. I’m glad to see that he is passing this on because this is integral to the art. This video is a treasure. The way he moves at his age is a testament to the effectiveness of this method for not only producing tremendous power, but also for preserving the health of the joints

Yes, Soke Inoue Yoshimi ha managed to make best use of the ancient systems of Chi circulation, - Starting on the bakc from the main finger on the leg running inside upwards to roughly heart level then somehow interconnected they continue outward on the inside of arms, completeing a four hour circle , making our intestines and frontal body soft. -Then the Chi goes on to flow from the small fingers on the hands outside their hand to head, and in the frontal head making a U turn back on head , downwards paralleling the backbone and separated along the side of the legs as far as down to the small fingers on the feet. - Again, completing a 4 hours course that is repeated 6 times during a 24hrs long day. Best regards and appreciation. Paul, 67, retired instructor of Karate.

It'd be good to have someone that understands exactly what he is saying that'll say it in everyday language. Maybe a black belt that understands every day English.

Dear Master, the more Isee , the more I know, how much I have lost! One thing is still of the greatest value: Relax body, be awareness of the torso movemt, which comes as first, and then final technique to be performed. God Bless You. Paul,67

Yes, on e more idea, for discussion, that the activer attcs or actions ar e based on the whip action, whereas the Passiveaction,s , meeting the invoming force ar based on the wave, which like a telesdcope ar building force against the incoming wal, and, by some my Kung Fu resources, kkeping out against a force requieres less force. Thazt ios why, in my oppionion, Master Yoshimi is pushing his whole body against the ooi tsuki ofthe femalae opponent. Is there any reason in it or not?
