Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, explaining the difference between "normal" and "emergency" breathing methods in Karate. The former is the regular breathing that we do when we are relaxed. This method should be used during the execution of fast sequences or real-life techniques. Indeed, trying to split (for example) a block technique in two parts - inhalation and exhalation - would result in the body being too stiff, and the technique being too slow and therefore ineffective. Only natural breathing enables the body to move fast and efficiently.
The second approach, emergency breathing, can be used (discreetly) during slow sequences of katas - especially after the execution of challenging sections - to recover energy. It involves the relaxation of the lower part of the abdomen and the consequent automatic inflow of air in the lungs. To demonstrate this concept, Sara Battaglia from the Italian National Kata team performs a sequence from the kata Chatanyara Kushanku.

Exactly, Soke Inoue Yoshimi and Mr. Alessandro Timmi, Standard breathing is very important and it is practiced with the upper, maximum the medium parts of lungs. Often termed as shallow breathing. Full oe r here the "Emergency breathing makes use of the diaphragm tknown as the abodominal breathing, -like through navel, which is introduced by conscious breathin out, -pulling our navel in, and is followed by releasing our abdominal muscles, which then activates breathing-in uncounciously, thus giving some extra energy to our next move performed at a high pace. R.I.P Soke Yoshimi, and may God accept him as an insturctor for guarding angels. Paul, 67, retired instructor.

The sensei is teaching a subtle point that during the transition from a slow movement to a rapid one, how to manage the breathing. He's asking the woman to show two breathing patterns, one stops early at the throat and the next deeper down, to see the difference. But she didn't quite get what he wants.

Amazing video and fantastic class, lucky who was there. A note, here the master is referring to Ki (Chinese Qi) and relation to the breathing techniques. The relation could be hard to catch for who’s not familiar with internal power development systems. Easy here is mistake the “emergency breathing” as something similar to western boxing. Is entirely another thing, another kind of power too.

I am curious what this guy can do with his strikes???? For some reason I'd suspect he'd hurt a fellow. I may have seen others just as good or better, but looking at this, it looks like he is the best I have seen yet.

@davidacobb1
@davidacobb1 4 жыл бұрын
I think he was saying, rather than forced breathing, in and or out, just breathe naturally and stay relaxed. A lot of us focus on the breathe in when contracting, breathe out when expanding(striking, blocking or kicking etc.), and he seemed to say that actually makes for slower and less perfect technique. He also said, reserve the abdominal breathing for emergencies, or only when you're tired and fatigued.

Might be difficult, considering that he passed away in 2015. The superior alternate would be for the Italian translator to have learned Japanese, so that there was only one language translation before reaching the audience.
