NEW SOLAR PANEL VIDEO - I REPLACED THESE WITH NEW PANELS!
• Solar Panels for Begin...
In this video I discuss my use of the harbor freight solar panels. I discuss the basics of using solar to power your RV. I am not affiliated with harbor freight and I purchased these panels on my own for full price.

People keep giving thumbs down to great videos because they come here looking for solutions to unrealistic issues and if you don't give end-all, be-all answers, they shoot you down. This video is straight forward and correct in its info and presentation. If you're looking for "more" or something different, just move on. There's no reason to give this guy a thumbs down because he didn't solve your particular problem. Thumbs up from me... You were concise, accurate and pleasant in your delivery, even with the screaming. 😉

Our first solar kit was the old 50 kit that Harbor Freight use to sell. I think it was a 3 panel kit and each one was maybe 15 or 20 watts. It actually worked really well for us when we had it. It was a good start for us. Now we have 200 watts on our trailer roof plus a 100 watt Renogy suitcase panel. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to the dog house... My wife has similar phobias. Glad I saw your common sense method for mounting the charge controller! We've used this setup on our Tag trailer for a couple of years and thousands of miles. We traded our Tag in on a 24 ft Kodiak that has the same solar input as your rig. In order to use the solar panels on our new trailer, I was about to build a waterproof container and Rube Goldberg this thing. Thanks to you, I'm now in the market for two pieces of Velcro! Thanks!

Even though we use parks with hookups when camping, our goal is to have them keep our 2 batteries charged for interior lights, 2 slides and all 12 volt outlets in case of boondocking or outages.

I used to work at an RV dealer. I was the shop manager. Trailers we sold typically had a 3k inverter and two batteries with space for four. You can run ac from that. How long? That depends on the batteries. The more amp hours you have, the longer you'll have power.

We are first-time buyers of travel trailers. We have researched travel trailers for about two years and knew what we wanted in a travel trailer for the size vehicle we have. Last week we purchased a used one and had it hooked to our house for the first night. On the second night, we were away from our house in one of our fields on our property and I quickly realized the importance of having a generator or permanent power and that a solar panel will not run anything, just help maintain the battery. Thank you for making this video and helping us understand how solar works and AC vs DC.
@marzsit9833
@marzsit9833 3 жыл бұрын
it depends on how devoted to traveling in your trailer you are as to whether or not to invest money on a real solar power system. if you only plan to travel a few weeks per year, a generator is a cheaper option. the closer you get to being on the road full-time, running and maintaining a generator gets more expensive and a real solar power system starts to look like a better option because once you have the system installed, the electricity it produces is free with minimal maintenance costs. the harbor freight kit is really not suited to full-time use, it's really a toy solar system that is good for beginners to play with so they can learn how a real solar system works. kind of how kids play with legos to learn how to stack bricks..
@truthersunitereborn9982
@truthersunitereborn9982 3 жыл бұрын
@@marzsit9833 Haha great comment. In my preps I did purchase some "toy solar panels" from Harbor Freight I haven't tested them yet because it was really just a last resort kind of purchase. Now I have the knowledge and understanding of what my needs are for solar and what to buy. I plan on a small battery bank and a larger one when I finally go that route of building a setup. A smaller one for gadgets and such and the larger for Appliances, PC and TV. The Harbor Freight stuff will be used to power the smaller battery bank. I have collected various batteries to swap out as they get to the low voltage range for that smaller setup. If people truly want to be "off grid" they need a real good battery bank of the same model of battery. I do not want the noise or worry of a generator. If need be, my car can be used for generating power at a lower noise level in a dire situation - say when it's raining for a few days. All the best.

I've got two of the 45 watt kits...just wanted to let you know they work great in snow..we got 7 inches 2 weeks ago, and these panels took that snow glare and turned it into watts...oh...I have 8 batteries but I'd probably need 2 more to run an AC..I'll have 690 watts of panels after the first...anyhow I'm gonna try it ...I think if I let it charge in the morning I can run the AC some in the afternoon..(I've got $2000 in it and it's almost enough...another 500 and I got this...) we have too much on the grid now and all you see are ads for high powered countertop ovens..I just rather have my own lol, after I get 2 more batteries I'll have 420 amp hours @24 volts..that's about what one will need for AC..I'm just building mine so if I can't run something I just buy more stuff till I can...I'm retired so I don't have to go anywhere much and it just gives me something to tinker around with..I figure at some point I'll get enough solar then I can have free power for whatever..I've wanted to have my own juice for a long time..without having to listen to a generator..I'm not into that unless it's a rare day..Im building one anyways though...you know, like in the Tremors movie..backup for the backup..lol

thank you for the video. i bought four of these kits to learn with and possibly use. you are the first person to identify the name of that "sae" connector. everyday i learn more about this solar stuff. here is what i learned today that i suspect is not common knowledge: 4 panels 25 watt= 100 watts. but did you know that is rated at 24 volts, even though everyone that buys these are using them on 12 volt systems. so: 12volts x 4amps = 36watts is what your battery will actually get from the charge controller. i put an amp clamp on mine today and can confirm that all 4 panels connected as one unit puts out 4 amps at 24 volts. we dont charge at 24 volts. i am still trying to understand if this is dishonest marketing. from my 4 100 panels (yes i did buy four of these kits) i got 13 volts x 16amp = 208 watts delivered to my battery. but i bought 400 watts and its all hooked up correctly i think....maybe this is common sense to everyone else, just thought i'd share.

@marzsit9833

jason brown your word salad is completely tossed and very confusing to understand but i think i might know what you are trying to say....... you measured the open circuit voltage of the panels when they were not connected to the charge controller and you saw a high voltage reading well above 12 volts. this is normal because of the way a photovoltaic cell works, the open circuit voltage will be high because even though voltage is being produced, no actual electrical current is flowing. in order to measure actual solar array voltage you have to have everything connected in the system, then you can measure the voltage at the input of the charge controller to get an accurate reading. most 12volt panels produce 17-18 volts when connected, 24 volt panels produce 34-36 volts so there is no way your harbor freight setup is producing that high voltage unless you did something stupid... now, the last line in your post you say you got 13 volts at 16 amps, this is with sixteen 25-watt panels connected so you're saying you only got 1 amp from each panel? this also tells me that you are a complete idiot, but then again you bought 4 sets of these harbor freight panels to 'learn' on...
@jasonbrown467

@@marzsit9833 i never stopped learning about solar since i posted this 11 months ago, and spotted only one mathematical error that i made, yet i see several from you, you know the one who thinks is teaching this "idiot" something. i can correct some of your assumptions. i was pointing how how the harbor freight kit says "100 watt kit" on the box, but it will never produce that. 14.4v x 4a =57.6 watts, i misspoke 11 months about about the voltage only being 12v and did the wrong math somehow, but my point stands 57 watts is not 100 watts. harbor freight uses open circuit voltage and short circuit current to calculate wattage then stamp it on the box like its possible. they claim the kit is 24v x 4a =98 watts, but the kit uses a pwm controller with no voltage step down and dumps all volts over battery charge voltage witch is a max of 14.4v. i returned all but one of those harbor freight kits once i saw how expensive they were and little power they produced. i since then have built a 16kw system for my home and it all started with that crap harbor freight system, so you can insult, toss assumptions and throw out your bad information all you want, i won this pissing contest that i didnt even know i was in.

Have a composting toilet i made that separates 1 and 2. And a sun shower o made from a black military water can. Off grid 100 percent for as long as i want to go. No a\c. your refrigerator should have a couple of switches if it is a two-way. one switch will say 115 V this is your AC. the other switch will say 12 V this is your battery. or if you have a three-way fridge there will be a pilot light setup and igniter to run it off propane. to run your refrigerator of solar just flip the switch to 12V. make sure you only have one power source on at a time.

But it is not possible to find actual data on this anywhere, all the data is for direct sunlight only... I have limited room of 9m2 on my van (enough room for 1200w monocrystaline panels). I have now a small 100w monocrystaline panel and it makes less then 0,5w now here north of polar circle in middle of the day if there is no sun. On a partially cloudy day it did make 40w when I measured it today 1,5 hours after middle of the day.

Thanks, I plan to buy a set for the RV I just ordered. Simple and looks to do the job, as that's all that's needed. Once it trickle charges the batteries does it knock the input back and basically sit on standby like a float charger? Or do I need to disconnect once they are recharged? Also as far as your Yamaha 2k inverter generator, you said about your elevation being a factor, Im concerned here in PA that 2k won't be enough for my 13,500 BTU AC. I don't want to buy a $2500 Yamaha 4k gen but I was thinking that's what it'll require.

The lights in your trailer run off the battery/batteries, i have 2 Marine batteries on my 2020 Forrest River Wildwood XLT. The electric plugs, microwave and AC don't work on batteries. These panels "recharge" your battery from the "drain" of the use of your batteries. I will say that the harbor freight thunderbolt 100 watt panels do come with 2 LED lights that im still trying to figure out how to get them into my trailer to use at night🤷‍♀️but seeing his videos has given me some ideas🤔🕵️‍♀️🤔. I hope i have helped.

Jerry Beaulieu I think you are b.s here because such a small inverter won’t be able to run everything, may be the microwave. Just a small microwave is 700 watts , an a/c even If is a small unit 5 k btu it takes 600 watts and that’s if you have at least 400 amps of batteries to run it for about 5 hrs before the batteries drain. So don’t B.S people here.

Some marine/dock/lift places do too. I've had a 24v-20w set-up on my boat lift for more than 10 years. (Brand is LakeLite) I leave the panels on the lift all year, even through the cold Minnesota winters. They are expensive, but they are very knowledgeable about solar.

This is not real solar. There is solar you can run all of your appliances on. This is not it. All you do with this system is trickle charge your batteries. You would need a battery bank and a 400w system and a real solar controller.
@marzsit9833
@marzsit9833 3 жыл бұрын
all solar systems charge batteries, this is a real solar system but it's not a good-quality system. 100 watts is small, but 400 watts is not big by any means if you intend to run coffeemakers or hair dryers.. agreed the hf charge controller is shit but it's a good learning tool.

Thanks! I watch your motorcycle videos but didn’t know you did other topics too. I thought if your trailer was solar ready with the input on the outside wall as with yours implied that there was a charge controller built into the trailer’s electrical system already. I think that the charge controller you used is redundant. Can anyone confirm? I have a 21’ Apex Nano with the ’solar ready’ connection there too.
