The solar airplane Solar Impulse 2 performed its #First Flight on June 2 in Switzerland. The experimental solar aircraft successfully landed after a maiden flight of 2 hours 17 minutes! Learn more about the First Flight of Solar Impulse 2 here: www.solarimpuls....
WHAT IS SOLAR IMPULSE ?
The only airplane of perpetual endurance, able to fly day and night on solar power, without a drop of fuel.
Our challenge is to attempt the First Round-The-World Solar Flight in 2015. A way for Bertrand Piccard, André Borschberg and their team to demonstrate how pioneering spirit, innovation and clean technologies can change the world.
Flight report :
Take-off time: 2 June 2014 5h36min CET
Landing time: 2 June 2014 7h53min CET
Highest altitude reached: 1670 mètres (5500 ft)
Average ground speed: 55.6 km/h (30 kt)

Use this technology for communications. Call cell phone providers, tell them you could save them billions on the cost of sending satellites into orbit. How simple and cheap it would make repairing and upgrading the equipment. Its kinda a shitty thing that cell phone service providers will reap the the real benefits. But hopefully the hard working solar impulse team will see some profit from it. Stay green people.

One of the primary concerns is the Aerodynamic efficiency of this technology. How long and wide windspan will be required to produce sufficient lift capable of lifting fully-loaded 747 and higher? It is an interesting breakthrough, but planes need to look beautiful too for commercial purposes.

They say the cruising speed of this craft is only around 28 mph. Unbelievably slow. 118 hours nonstop flight from Japan to Hawaii. It must have been mind-numbing for the pilot. I don't think I could take sea gulls passing me like I was standing still. It's an awesome venture, but hardly practical.

Why does the pilot need heavy boots ? Shave some weight and give him lighter-weight special shoes. Also, sitting for extended periods is torture on the ankles and toes so they need circulation help such as vibrating socks.
