Love your philosophical side-rants, since I am very much in agreement with most of them :-) In terms of OSes, since you mentioned them... my turn for a rant: I switched to Linux 20+ years ago, and never looked back. Over the years I went beyond that: in terms of Linux distributions, I moved towards the simplest, less-GUI ones... and in general, I ended up basically doing everything on the command line (except for a handful of exceptions). That means I can do everything I ever needed on any of the open source UNIXes - Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD. I think you'd probably appreciate the simplicity of that digital lifestyle - with the added benefits that I (a) can used 10y old computers and feel fine (b) migrate/backup/restore between computers and open-source OSes in no time, because everything I do is just "files" - revision controlled text files in Git repositories (c) use the same tools (shells, editors, interpreters, etc) whether I am at home or at my work machine or connected over remote links to server farms or connected to my phone (running an open-source version of Android). I am old, I guess - and probably sound bizarre to most people out there - but simplifying my digital life while maintaining total control over my devices and what they do, is, IMHO, the best way to go. It takes effort, but pays it back in spades.

Nice way to show current/voltage characteristic and trace the maximum output of a solar cell indeed! I agree on that thing with technology being unnecessary complicated for no good reason. It got me thinking of my mothers husband, who was about to build a "smart home", but was to stupid to even connect dimmer switches and outlets for that system him self. I did that for them, so they didn't have to spend a fortune on electricians. One ridiculous thing about the system it self, is that the dimmers where using 80's tech from the days of incandescent light bulbs (even if it's controlled by new wireless technology). That didn't go along well well with LEDs and often caused them to buzz and flicker (even those supposed to be dimmable) - especially since he wanted strong LEDs (to be able to get some brightness when wanted), but had them way dimmed down most of the time (usually, the problem get worse the more dimmed down they are - the lower the setting, the more of the sine wave is cut off. At very low settings, it's 100 short pulses a second, rather than a continuous wave. Which is bad for most loads except resistive heat sources or light based on a glowing filament that simply uses "thermal inertia" to level out their output. A big LC-filter is needed to level out such discontinuous power feed and make it work good for most other loads. Which there is no room for inside most LEDs, despite being labelled as "dimmable" - there is a limit how small energy storing passive components can get, despite how compact and "smart" the controller electronics inside are). In the hallway and living room, they still have old CFLs left, that take like 5 minutes to reach their full brightness and when I ask "when are you going to change those shitty lamps to LEDs?", he says "it's expensive". Yeah - but it's ok to spend the price of 100 LEDs to just be able to turn off the light from your phone instead of the light switch. Now they are not using that system any more, because my mother got really mad at him because of all the problems it caused as he never got it working properly. He ended up just wasting like $2000 on a system he can't use without too much hassle and they are still using the CFLs in the hallway and living room...

Very cool, its like 1 step away from MPPT charge controller, the maximum power point tracker basically follows that knee of that Current /Voltage curve as the sun fluctuates to keep maximum power up. Which you coud do manually with a potentiometer come to think of it but are done by microcontroller these days. But you dont need to do it constantly just when the sun changes positions i found anyway, 3 positions pretty much gets all the advantages of a physical tracker , id imagine the same with manual MPPT tracking. In some cases its no better then PWM charge controlling, its more efficient but doesnt pull power out of no where. I think were entering an age where we dont have to rely on makers, we have all the tools to make things ourselves, like charge controllers, drones and what not, i dont think talented engineers are signing up to work in apple anymore like when i was going to school, they're making ionic thrusters on youtube. So no need to worry, the future isnt monopolistic and boring i think we're at the dawn of a new age of invention, a cambrian explosion of technology and exploration of the universe around the corner.

An approximation of a solar panel is a current source proportional to illumination in parallel with a forward-biased diode. The voltage on the solar panel is given by the Shockley diode equation (V = Ut ln (I/Is)) where Is is the saturation current and Ut=25mV at 25°C, hence the logarithmic curve. As the load current increases, it is subtracted from the current flowing into the diode and the voltage decreases. When the load current reaches the current source's output current, the voltage drops to zero.

LEDs and solar cells are basically the same thing. Only the effect is used in different directions. A reverse-biased LED behaves like a solar cell. But you shouldn't use a white LED with a luminescent layer. A blue or green LED can be a solar cell. A solar cell can also be an infrared LED. This is used during production to sort out defective solar cells. A transistor with an opened TO-3 case is also a solar cell

At work they bought a very expensive instrument (more expensive than a good new car) which comes with windows-only software, and the purpose for which they bought it was to make week-long measurements. Of course Windows reboots and ruins the experiments frequently (wasting weeks of researcheers' time and destroying very expensive samples), even with updates "paused" and / or with various registry hacks suggested on the internet to stop updates. The best solution so far is to unplug it from the internet, but that means no remote desktop access so someone has to come into the lab often to make sure it hasn't crashed (of course it does that too!). If they ask me to fix it I will probably install Linux as the host OS and then run the Windows software in a VM that has no internet access. Then we should still be able to see what the windows software is doing on the screen by logging into the Linux machine remotely.

Welcome to Microsoft Windows. It's your own fault, only uninformed people use Windows. I use a Mac since 1999, Macs don't reboot without user consent. We had a similar discussion about Android a few month ago, apparently you don't want to change your devices, you just want to rant about them.

If you express your own opinions, it will be just a matter of time until you disappear...

Is it really that bad? Isn't this just a paranoia? I didn't even mention what operating system do I use... Do you think the company that developed it could still complain?
