Since the charge controller has to be connected to the battery before connecting it to the solar panels, I was wondering how you dealt with disconnecting your battery from the trailer when not in use? Did you install a switch between the solar panels and the charge controller that you could turn off when the battery is also completely disconnected? And then first connect the battery to the trailer to energize the charge controller before then flipping a switch to reconnect the solar panel to the charge controller?

Nice install. I think I'm going to follow your lead and do it the same way. Now that you've had your solar system up for a season, if you had it to do over, would you do anything differently?

Hi Lewis, having trouble getting fish tape from roof vent opening to closet. There are 2 90"s in vent conduit. Any ideas to help? Tia

One way is to tie a large nut to a piece of string, then drop it down the vent pipe. Use a strong magnet to guide it to the hole you've drilled, then pull the string through.

Hi Lewis, how did you get the wiring through the roof vent into the closet? I have removed the vent cover on the roof and drilled a hole in the vent pipe in the closet. Attempted to run a fish tape through the conduit without any luck. There are 2 90's in the conduit that my fish tape does not want to pass through to the roof. Tia

Looks great! One advantage to mounting the panel using bolts coming in from the side is that it's easier to remove and replace the panel if it gets damaged or you need to do maintenance on it down the road. With the bolts vertical, I'm not sure you can remove the panel without taking the brackets off. Unrelated question... where did you get that closet light switch/module that clips to the vent pipe?

The switch is part of a custom light kit we install. The kit is made by Little Home on the Road. They will sell the kit for self install soon. The kit is made for a Katy's Casita Closet.

Thanks, Lewis, for a great how-to. We are picking up our new Casita later this month. I’d love to do these same modifications to our trailer, the Katy’s Closet, the light kit, and the solar panel. Would you be able to help us with that? Happy Camping!

This is great! I am likely going to take this approach with my Casita. One question, have you experienced any issues / loss efficiency due to the solar controller being relatively far away from the battery?

Any loss is so small, I'm not worried about the small losses. I did this for ease of install and it works!

Great Video, but I'd like to clarify something, as it can be a bit confusing. The white wire is actually negative and the black wire is positive. In 12VDC systems, the negative is chassis ground but in Casitas there is also a green ground wire that is bolted/welded to the frame (they can be seen in the battery compartment). Although technically both the green wire and the white wire go to the negative post on the battery in my opinion (electrician) it is probably best to call them positive and negative as opposed to power and ground. There is something similar in house wiring, as the white (neutral) and the bare ground wire go to the same place in a panel they are two different wires and serve two different functions after they leave the panel. Hope I didn't make it more confusing. Just my two cents.
