Usually, most panels produce 80-90% of their rated STC output. PTC is the real world output, but most panels do not list that. So I use STC. I use total Wh production over the course of a day to compare panels long term. Because various types of cells and film produce more or less depending on temperature and other factors. Figured this was a given, but some people in the comments section do not understand this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Does off-grid solar confuse you? I stopped to say hi and he said they aren't yet connected and doesn't have the skills to hook panels to inverter, batteries, etc. I volunteered to help. I had different results in my test with the solar panel multimeter. Mine seems to work quite well and has confirmed the previous tests with the MPPT charge controller setup. When buying used panels it is totally impractical to setup a battery and solar charge controller on-site just to test a few panels. The solar panel tester is a quick and very effective solution to check all panels in no time. It can quickly identify if panels work and can achieve the labelled output. If the tester is 100% accurate is not important at this point. It will help identify damaged or degraded cells quickly. The perfect solution for testing panels on the go.

Normal individual cell processing produces cells with a distribution of performane variation and is result of slight silicon doping variance in manufacturing. Manf. sort the cells to groups of like performance cells for the same panel. This is why you often see same model variation grades with something like three to five grades with different wattage. They all will look physically the same, just grading (and therefore cost) on cells are difference. I use a DL24 load tester. You need to have a load tester with CV, adjustable constant voltage mode, which is like a variable high power zener diode load. For a little manual CV adjustment it allows you to easily get the different parameter of Isc, Voc, Imp and Vmp, along with the corresponding wattage. Running CV setting down below about 50% panel spec'd Voc gets you close to Isc reading. Running CV up til you get zero current is Voc. You can see the heating progression of panel in sun with Voc reading. Adjusting CV for maximum power reading is Vmp and Imp and you can likely manually adjust CV to max power as fast or faster then an MPPT controller finds maximum power point. Voc is most important indicator, followed by Isc and should be measured for any panel test. It also ensures you have enough panel overhead voltage to effectively run an MPPT controller for given battery voltage (should have at least 4v overhead). The quality of series resistance and shunt resistance of cells determine the MPPT point for given Voc and Isc. Normally for qood quality cells, I_mp is between 90-95% of I_sc and V_mp will be between 80-85% of Voc. Isc for good cells should be 40-45 mA/cm2, in full sun, per actual silicon cell area. Most common sized cells are from 156x156 mm wafer with rounded corners for about net 215 cm2 area per cell, yielding Isc of about 9 amps. Must not have any partial shading for these relationship to be true. Poor shunt resistance does not effect full sun performance but impacts low light performance. All cells have some shunt defects producing the shunt resistance so the less the defects the higher the quality of cell. Using one of these load tester also gives the additonal application of battery load testing that the dedicated panel testers do not have which makes the expense of the load tester more justified over just occational use of dedicated panel tester.

Hi Will, If you will be using a multi-meter to test used panels, consider getting some extra leads and wire them in to an MC-4 connected and an MC-3 connector for the really old used panels. Having it soldered up and shrink wrapped will make it way more convenient so you are more likely to use it and you won't need a 3rd hand. I think the Chinese meters come in handy, when you build your system entirely from used panels, like Andy from the Off Grid Garage does. Even if they are not that accurate, they provide a good indication as to if the panels are still good or trash. And with their portability you can use them at the pick up place before you actually buy the panels.

@@recoblade1465 Well, when I go to buy something off of some platform equivalent to Craigslist (what Andy did and does), I don't pay before I actually had the chance to see the product in person. Except when the good condition is actually obvious from the ad description, the pictures and the communication with the seller beforehand. Used solar panels are a mixed bag, as we could see with Andy. So that are products where to pay up front can bite you in your a$$ royally. Okay, Andy got the majority of his panels for free, but it still took him time and a rental van to haul them home.
@recoblade1465
@recoblade1465 3 жыл бұрын
@@wiedapp I had never even contemplated using used panels. Have trust issues with Craigslist in the like but if I did I would rather you know do like wildy and get something like a Victron 75/15 and take some of the Headway cells I have and turn them into a 48 volt pack. And know that it's accurate for an extra $20. Although I would probably go with the 100 / 20 even though it's double the price due to the fact that that way I would have a testing station plus a solar charge controller more than capable of handling 620 Watts at 48 volts because I have 620 watts of solar right now. But that's just my opinion on the matter

Will in a future video, I want you to try doing a cardboard backing board on a large solar panel and see how far the output falls and do a control with the same cardboard backing board with a large 120mm pc fan for active cooling across the panel surface. Also when you get a conductor hot it loses it ability to carry current by a percentage while your wires are sitting in direct sunlight.

It's probably like what is done by computer chip manufacturers (at least used to be). They would produce batches of identical chips and test them. Some performed better than others and they would sell the lower performing ones under a different classification. In this case, they sold the lower performing ones to another brand name.

Yes, nobody need those testers because you can see the output on the solar controller more accurately. I have 10 Canadian solar, 10 Trina 72 cells, 400w each and the output depend of cloudiness, temperature or degradation, however, in some lighting conditions one brand can output more than the other and vice versa and sometimes the output is more than the stated ratings on the 41st parallel north.

Panel cooling is one of those topics that nearly everyone wants to solve when they're getting into solar (myself included) but the added cost, increased power consumption and added hassle, are typically not worth the limited gains. It is something I have thought but never been too compelled to do. I know when I am washing the solar panels I call down to my wife off the roof to have her read me the wattage on our inverter in real time and me spaying the solar panels is amazing in full sun in Central Florida especially in summer heat. Something like AE Solar's panels have up to 7 different power level bins 5W apart for exactly the same model. So it's not at all uncommon.

Why not open and calibrate those units by using your victron as the source for calibrating? I'm sure there is an adjustment pot on those, give it a shot.

hi will. for about 100$ there are Chinese panels which power is insane compare to these. I have JA solar with 535 watts of output and 20.5 efficient. there's a lot of brands from Chinese with similar outputs. jinko, kaco , rec solar, risen solar, yingli solar. these are some of the Chinese manufactures. so if you can do a test with them it would be great.

It would be interesting if you could use one panel as an ongoing reference. You could then compare each panel you test to the reference panel to see how output compares in the light and heat conditions at the time. 🤔

Maybe if making your own system it might pay to add some sort of heat sink to the back of the solar panels.❄

Panel cooling is one of those topics that nearly everyone wants to solve when they're getting into solar (myself included) but the added cost, increased power consumption and added hassle, are typically not worth the limited gains. The only exception, where cooling "might" payoff, would be on a giant solar farm(?)

Have you ever tried build a floating solar array? I am in the process of transitioning to a sailboat and want to be able to have AC while at anchor and not have a boat that looks like Dr Suess designed the solar panel system. 5 x 150w on a 12x6 non towable floating mat deployed at anchor to run a less than 10k btu system maybe?

Like Will said, the meter's OK if you are sorting panels, but not for installers - they will have an expensive meter $$$ Plus Andy from that 'other' solar KZbin channel (Off-Grid Garage) uses a different meter - after he used this meter.

I'm not sure what the significance of bringing in panels that were cool to do testing to see if you can achieve a higher output performance? Seeing how these are going to be in the sun the entire time once they are installed, then I would hope that I would get full optimization from them. I would see if I could source panels locally and have them tested prior to purchasing. This way you get to see if they perform as outlined. I'd hate to buy on line, pay for shipping and end up being dissatisfied with their performance. What guarantees do you have? 1500 watt array = 1300 watts in reality. Not acceptable. JMO
