Hi Jeff I like the way you show everything on your videos about wind and solar and the ways it can be made to work for people who may not have enough money to buy more batteries .Like the solar pond aeration with no batteries required and the electronic set up that you are using ,I lost all my solar set up in a Lightning strike and watch all your videos on wind turbines and solar set up. I have seen so much that I did wrong like setting up grounding wires its a wonder it lasted the years, how are the fish doing and now I have to use mains power again what wast of money with so much free sun and wind power I even tried making a house fan into wind turbine well it charge two AA batteries lol .

Ever resolve relay switch?
@xanataph10 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff I was thinking about your configuration here and it is an excellent idea to use that buck/boost converter in this way. Had an idea thought the relay though. Instead ov just putting one in the 12v line to the inverter, which ov course would require a reasonably large one, you can instead switch the pilot line using a much smaller relay. The easiest way to get at this is to tap into the wires going to the power switch. You will find that these only carry a low current signal. Put your relay either in series or parallel with the power switch depending on your tastes. The advantage ov this is that you're basically telling the inverter's microcontroller to instigate power up or power down rather than just cutting the high current line into the inverter all ov a sudden. Tapping into the pilot line is also a great way to add a remote switch to any inverter. :)
@MissouriWindandSolar10 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea, never thought about that. I am going to give that a try. The only drawback is it would void the warranty but at the cheap cost of it anyway i guess i wouldn't care. Thanks Jeff
@xanataph10 жыл бұрын
MissouriWindandSolar Yeah no doubt it would, but as you say those small inverters are cheap as nowadays. Plus there is not much that can go wrong adding some relay contacts across the power switch, providing those lines don't get connected anywhere else inadvertently. How were you planning on getting the relay to disconnect before the voltage gets too low? You would need some sort ov voltage sensitive trigger circuit as relays on their own tend to have a massive differential in their pick up and drop out voltages. I once built a circuit for my old boss' 1000watt inverter such that in the event the inverter got overloaded and shut down it would switch it off compleatly, wait around 5 minutes and then power it up again. It was to run a beer fridge in his truck while out on jobs (sound systems). This inverter could run the fridge fine as long as the compressor did not stop near top dead centre at the end ov a cycle. If it did the inverter would overload and cut out when the thermostat switched in again. However, if you waited a little while and then reapplied power it would work. So my circuit essentially did this automatically.
@xanataph10 жыл бұрын
***** The idea here is to do away with the batteries. On the face ov it you could simply use a DC pump and if you have what some call a "Load Optimiser", which is simply a circuit that properly matches the power from the panel into the pump motor you will get more hours ov run time per day than a direct connexion. However I think Jeff's point here is that the AC pond aeration pumps are much cheaper than the DC variety.
@xanataph10 жыл бұрын
***** No one is arguing that you can't use a battery if that's the way you would like to go. And I agree with the right sized battery and panel you can have a pump running 24 hours a day if you like. But running pumps without batteries so they only work on reasonably sunny days or better is a common thing that is done nowadays & many people are interested in doing just this. Comparatively a solar panel is a *relatively* high impedance source compared to the *relatively* low impedance motor. Maximum power transfer only happens when the source & load impedances are equal. If we were talking about AC circuits here one would simply use a transformer to correctly match them. A Load Optimiser does the same thing but with DC. It's essentially a switchmode DC transformer. Except that it can dynamically change it's "ratio" to make the best ov the available conditions.

xanataph The problem with a daylight only aerator is that most fish kills occur on hot summer nights when the algae actually starts using the oxygen in the pond instead of adding oxygen to the pond like it does in sunlight.

@michaelcollins34556 жыл бұрын
This idea does not work. I wish it did, but it doesn't. You may notice that after he puts in the magical circuit unit, the alarm on the cheap inverter goes off (before AND after). The company only charges a little more than the parts involved...so I'll give them that. The bottom line is that this system will shut off everytime the inverter senses low input. That's that. Also--you don't want to pump air into the bottom of your pond during the day. You want to do that at night, otherwise, you wind up with a hot pond--which isn't good for anything. I liked the idea too much. Luckily I was able to scavenge most of the system for use in other applications. (Not the inverter though--which was of the lowest quality I've seen in decades.) I ordered this over the phone. Even though I got the same person on the phone a few weeks after, their claim was that I must have dialed the wrong number. I used the pump, dug a very long trench for the air hose, and plugged it into a reliable electric source (i.e. could be a solar battery bank). Wish all of you the best. If someone can think of a way to make this work (without batteries) so that the inverter doesn't shut down and need to be restarted by hand, I'd be interested in hearing your ideas. Last point, I was running 300+ photovoltaic panals over the course of a week of testing. Night comes at some point anyway, which means that either the invertor will shut off and drain batteries...etc. There must be a way to do what was shown in the video, but--again--you'd be swapping cool water from the bottom of your pond during the most intense sun-lit times of the day. That is no help.
