Great system. I currently use A/C septic pumps with weights hose. I will give the direct solar a try. For future , you can avoid the cost of expensive diffusers by using a 3/4” hose barb T and cut a length of weighted tube then using a small diameter drill bit and drill holes around the outside of the circle of hose. If you are close. To shore you can just toss the diffuser in or monofilament to drag it across the pond. Pond aeration is superior to any fountain.

Some thing simple is an airlift pump. You can use a simple a cheap diagram air pump. that puts in any volume of air you need using any kind of hose you desire, just mix and match the air volume. It moves water with the air and pushes their water and breakers up the surface tension. Doesn’t clog like normal water pumps. So you can uses a filter if you need too, but for this case or others you just need to lift the air a short height, 2-3 inches and so get lots of movement and lots of agitation.

People off grid have been trying to air-condition with solar cheaply. Most off grid people harvest rain water or store water . I know Earth's temperature is 55°f-65°f say 5ft below ground . If I placed my water storage at that depth with one of those diffusers or one smaller and I siphoned the air from the dead air space on top into my 12× 20 insulated shed . Would you think that'd be worth trying or am I thinking crazy?

I saw a video about 5-10 years ago where a guy just wired a solar panel direct to a 12v air compressor. IIRC he said he got a few years out of the compressor but it didn't like when the sun was setting/rising and that was causing pre-mature failure
@teekay17854 жыл бұрын
can't easily compensate for clouds without more sophisticated solution but just run a timer to not allow to turn on till after a set time and turn off before late afternoon. Could use voltage switch that would also cut off during day with limited solar.
@ericpipkin33564 жыл бұрын
Our aerators incorporate an MPPT controller that provides great performance under nearly all solar conditions. These control boards are built in Madison, WI for this exact purpose. Units equipped with dual panels will run during rain storms and heavy snowfalls. So far, these compressors have been seeing a life span of around 4-5 years.
@teekay17854 жыл бұрын
@@ericpipkin3356 Thats great to know but my alternative is just another way to accomplish the water movement and doesn't require piping etc and the motors last a very long time likely longer than the compressors and can generally be bought used for $200to $300 and basically no installation just drop in pond and plug up. On a timer they can essentially use direct pv power from home system but would loose some efficiency in conversion to ac then back to dc.They can also be installed to aerate like a fountain. I do see the advantage of your system and I think it is a very good option especially since ponds are often not near any source of electricity even if their home has solar. It also provides oxygenation as well as water movement.

So...having managed two ponds for 8 years now...the flaw in your system...you need to aerate when the sun it NOT out. I run my one aerator full time, but my fountain just in the evenings. Cloudy days are when you need it the most. Your mileage may vary I guess.

@engineer7754 жыл бұрын
It is moving a lot more water than you realize.
@Saratogan4 жыл бұрын
@@engineer775 , just by aeration? It seems like a bubbler in an aquarium. Is that the way to describe it? I was thinking of an aquarium as it also has a filter pump. The pump moves a lot of water as well as filtration. I would not expect to have to filter a pond though.
@teekay17854 жыл бұрын
people also use ICE EATERS to circulate the water from bottom to top and pretty efficient 1/2 hp uses around 500 watts and I think they make 1/10 hp ones. I use them duck hunting to keep water open .
@ericpipkin33564 жыл бұрын
In 4-5' of water, each of those diffusers will lift about 600 gal/min of water. If this pond is actually 10-12' deep, they will be lifting a lot more than that.

Build a ibc tote-frame "tower" from the bottom of the pond to near the top. Run a 6" pipe down the center, and put the air at the bottom at the pipe... at the top, using alfalfa bales, in the top ibc tote frame, that the water falls onto like a big filter. Orr.. up and over, into any walled and back filled with gravel portion of the pond.
