To help clarify the eCVT, there is no belt or chain used in the more traditional CVT. It uses the MGU1 and MGU2 to keep the engine at peak RPM so that it is providing maximum output. So the transmission is an all mechanical drivetrain that is a mixture of ICE and Electric motors. So the engine will sit at a constant speed when you give it the beans and the electric motors provide the variable output as the car goes faster.

The honda eCVT is a bit better then the toyota eCVT as the toyota one requires one motor to always be spinning in time with the engine to vary that rate of power via a planetary gear set

Although I think Toyota took a major step back with the last generation Prius. I currently have a gen 3 (that has a solar panel for ventilation), and when Toyota came out with the ugly gen 4, I thought my next car would not be a Prius. However seeing this design, and the EV range of the Prime, I've made a deposit on one.

If the top of the line came down in price and I needed a daily driver Id consider one of these.

2:55 - The power-split device is notoriously hard to wrap your brain around, but it’s mechanically amazingly simple compared to any classical transmission: essentially just one single planetary-gear set. (All but 1st- and 2nd-generation Priuses add a further speed-compensation gear as well, but fundamentally, it’s just a single planetary-gear set.) Once you do wrap your brain around it, it’s actually very straightforward! It’s essentially a differential with its inputs and outputs reversed: A differential has one input and two outputs, and the rotation speed of the outputs average out to the speed of the input. A power-split device has two inputs and one output, and the output’s rotation speed is the (weighted) average of the two inputs. One of the inputs is the engine and the other is MG1.

Road trips are where the Prius really outclasses every other vehicle on the road. My wife and I bought a 2007 Prius in 2015 and within a month of buying it we drove it from Tucson to Panama City Beach and back. I was kind of skeptical about the car before the trip (my wife picked it out for her car) but after that trip I was sold. That trip was 3,500 miles and we only had to spend $200 on gas. I think we only stopped to fill it up about six times over the entire trip. We're approaching 200k miles on it now and have never had any issues at all with the gas engine or the EV system. Other than routine maintenance the only thing we've had to repair was a leak in the AC system. It's not a pretty car but what it lacks in looks it more than makes up for in its engineering. I would argue that the Prius is the most reliable car ever built and they've only gotten better since ours was made.

Somewhere, Toyota calls those transaxle components a power splitter that does vary the power coming either M/G2 or the engine but no rubber band inside. And yes it kinda fit the definition of a transaxle. If you want hold back going down hill step on the brake pedal for the most part it will be using regen to slow you down instead of engine compression.

One tiny mistake. The VVTI in the Dynamic Force engines like this one are hydraulically controlled on the exhaust, but they use an electric motor to do the intake. I believe it can do a 40 degree advance on the exhaust and a 70 degree advance on the intake. There are also three other tire possibilities, but only manufacturer differences not size or performance differences. IOW, they all suck an equal amount. ;) Yokohama BluEarth, Michelin Primacy, and Bridgestone Ecopia are the other three possibilities. You don't get a choice, the car come with what it comes with. -Happy owner of an AWD Limited (the non-plug-in version of this trim)
