Granted, the planets orbits r elliptical, but not nearly as much as we tend to visualize. Example: If u would draw a very accurate representation of earths orbit on paper with a major axis of 200 mm, erase the foci, but leave the major and minor axii on it, you could not distinguish it from a circle--not even with a ruler. The planets paths r really very circular--Nep and Ven r even more circular than earths.

My point was one that almost nobody seems to realize--the true shape of the earths path. It is extremely accurately a circle. Fact is , if u draw a perfect 200 mm diameter circle and a perfect ellipse of .0167 eccentricity (earths) with a 200mm major axis, remove th representations of th foci, you could never with any measuring device you possess tell which one was the ellipse. (the minor axis would be 99.986% of the major--which is only 1/36th of a mm or 1/914th of an inch less).

This is truly amazing! Its amazing how little the outer planets seem to move at all compared to the inner planets! Imagine how long seasons would be there [assuming all of them have titlted axii]. Yeah I know, "what is a 'season' on a gas giant?" Must be intriguing to live on the moons of the gas giants though.. Irregular day and night, frequent eclipses. Real exciting I imagine!

I agree with those below. Our Solar system is in the Orion Belt or Arm and our Sun is traveling with the Orion Arm as the Milky Way Galaxy turns around and each planet is trailing or pulled along in an orbit that looks like a mechanical spring. Our Planet has an oval orbit and not a circular one. It is slanted on one side so the earth is closer and farther from the sun during one year!

Not only thinner, but incredibly thinner. If you used a typical .5 mm pencil, accurately lay the elipse atop the circle, the 2 lines would be about 97% overlapped. If u would similarly make such a representation of Mercs large eccentricity (.206), draw in the major/minor axi, remove the foci, and hold it 2 ft from someones eyes-- they probably couldn't tell u which was the major axis (th minor is 97.9% of the major)

The orbit paths may be elliptical, but to such a small degree that the are almost perfect circles. Math anyone? (-;

No, take a mirror, tape it with opaque tape to where a small part is reflecting the sun in a east facing window every 2 weeks or so put a mark on the celling (w/ the tape) and the path it takes is the shape of the orbit around the sun. this project takes a year to complete. ttyl ;-)

Distances and planets sizes are wrong, elliptical trajectories ignored, and Neptune and Pluto's plans should be slightly disaxed too. However in response to others, venus spins counter-clockwise around its own axis but turns around the sun in the same direction as the other planets. Some other planets also turn around their own axis differently.
@StrikaAmaru
@StrikaAmaru 12 жыл бұрын
No, the planet itself spins counter-clockwise on its axis so the Sun rises in the West and sets on the East, but the planet itself orbits the Sun in the same direction as all other planets.

Neptune and Pluto is one of the slowest planets to orbit Neptune takes about 185 years to do i orbit and Pluto does about 240 years to orbit because its miles away from the sun so long time.

The orbits are really elliptical or an oval, also since the sun revolves around the galaxy the orbits become spirals.

The rotational velocity at equator of sun is 2 km/sec-u r off by a factor of 1000 That's not so fast-- the earth velocity at equator is 1/4 of that but it is 1/100th the diameter.. Th sun takes 25 days to turn once. Yes, Merc orbit velocity is about 50kn/sec

you know why Pluto is not a planet anymore because long time ago a space probe travel all the way Pluto it took 16 years but when they got there they went maybe a few million Km ahead and they saw that there were more rocks that are bigger than Pluto so they think that Pluto is just part of a rock now poor Pluto the space probe is still over there looking.Please comment this.

Assuming that u place your mark at th same precise time each day: The figure made would b what we call an "analemma".(google it). This is because of the earths 23+ degree tilt, and th fact that th earth does speed up and slow down in its revolution throughout th year. If neither of these conditions existed, it would simply b a dot. Never would it b th shape of the orbital path--a very accurate circle. An analemma is an odd shaped figure 8

Justin Case well it is and it isn't. The IAU still doesn't consider it as a planet, but 2 members of the Harvard- Smithsonian Center of Astrophysics says that the definition of a planet changes overtime, but this doesn't hold any "official" weight to it. So it's kind of in a limbo (if that makes any sense).

WRONNNGGGGG !!! ... Anything you have read or heard about Pluto being Reclassified as a 'Planet', is either: 1.) .. Speculation that is could be reclassified as a Planet !!! 2.) .. Suggestions that is has Been or Will Be, by Astronomers, rather than Planetary Scientists !!! 3.) .. An April Fool's Day Joke: Which DID Happen in 2014 !!! 4.) .. Plain Outright Bullsh*t !!! The International Astronomical Union (IAU) planet definition in 2006: A celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit. Because the IAU took it upon itself early in the 20th century to be the body that names and defines things in space, this definition is why Pluto is no longer considered a major planet. In other words, Pluto - though it has a moon, an atmosphere, weather and many planet-like qualities - has not yet cleared the neighborhood of its orbit in space. Pluto does not orbit the Sun in the normal manner like the other planets. It is in the Kuiper Belt, and orbits the Sun on a slant in relation to the orbits of the actual Planets; and it intersects the Orbits of Neptune and Uranus. To call Pluto a Planet, would be like calling an Asteroid that is shaped like a planet, or a Comet, a Planet. Pluto, like Eris and Ceres, is a Dwarf Planet.

I did check out that video then. I thought you were disagreeing with my first reply about relativity to the sun vs galaxy. You sounded like one of those crazy religious cooks when you said "the Earth does not revolve around the sun." I already knew about revolution in the galaxy. And don't forget the entire galaxy is also moving! But yeah, we are on the same side.

Do you actually take the nonsense you see on you tube seriously? Just because the solar system orbits the galactic center, and also has other motions within the galaxy, does not in any way imply that the earth doesn't orbit the sun in a planar orbit. All you do with this nonsense is confuse yourself and others to the point you never truly learn about the universe you exist in. All motion is only in relation to other objects, so your helix is not absolute in any way anyhow.....>>

Nonsense! It demonstrates no such thing. You also never have done what you recommend. You appear to not even be able to visualize what we mean by the "shape of the orbital path of a planet". I said, "math anyone?". You yourself said "the orbits are really elliptical...", so simply show me some real math to describe the true shape of your ellipse (maybe earths). You will never be able to do even basic astronomy without the tool of math.
