When Cadillac downsized the DeVille in '85, they kept the old body alive until '92 as the Brougham, as a more-traditional car that spoke to different buyers than the new FWD cars. I wish Cadillac had done the same with the DTS. There's no reason they should've discontinued it. People would still be buying them! I can hardly believe it's been almost ten years since they pulled the plug on these great cars. Cadillac will never fully shake their old-man image, so they should just embrace it and keep at least one traditional car in the lineup...oh well. Now everything's gotta have aggressive looks and overly complicated infotainment systems.

I wish Cadillac would have run the 5.7 on everything from the early 80's forward & just kept improving the 5.7~ we would have thousands of amazing Cadillacs on the road that that whole 4.1-4.9 dreadful period in the 80s would never have happened.

For me the last Cadillac was the 1996 Fleetwood. No self respecting car is FWD. I have owned 6 NorthStar V8s, one being a 2001 Eldorado. (4 were 1998-99 Auroras and one was a 1996 Deville) I really like the performance of the Northstar. But two things i do NOT like about them: 1. They tend to leak oil from the two piece oil pan (all GM needed to do is use better quality gaskets). and MORE of a problem: 2. The threads in the block holding the head bolts would fatigue or corrode allowing the head gaskets to rupture. All GM needed to do is use steel inserts for the block threads. And in all the years they offered this engine (1992- 2011) they came up with band-aid solutions, but never did what it would take to eliminate either of these two problems.

@ktlewis42 The earlier Lucernes have the 3800 V6 which is one of the best V6 engines ever made. The 3.6 V6 isn't one of GM's finest! The 3.8 V6 is though. My '98 Buick Regal has 300k miles on the original 3.8 V6 and transmission. I like Lesabres/Park Avenues too! '92 Eldorado 4.9V8 is the best engine in the 92-02 Eldorados. I had one but damn it drained my wallet with repairs. I kept it in great shape. I got $500 when i traded it. Shame.

What year was it and how many miles did it have when you started having problems and what were the problems? Please let me know since I'm thinking about buying one. Thank you!

@@markchimmy 2009. I bought it with 78,000 miles. 1 owner. Mint condition. Started having problems at 109,000 miles. Fuse boxes, wheel bearings, transmission, fuel injectors, over heating, thermostat, power steering. The cost was ridiculous for repairs. It had the northstar engine. I paid 10k for it 4 or 5 years ago. Warranty did not cover anything.

Thank you for replying! I've been actually considering buying one it's a 2007 with 44.k on the clock for $7k and honestly I'm a little nervous after reading people's opinions and experiences. I currently drive a 2005 lincoln town car with 414k on the clock and over the years I have put very little money into it! besides the usual maintenance like pretty much just the fluids. those cars never really break down and if they do its usually an easy fix and very cheap and most guys can work on these cars themselves not even having to be a mechanic with just basic tools these cars are not complicated to work on at all with minimal technology under the hood and plenty of room all around. Anyway at this point I'm not sure if I should take chance and buy that caddy or not even though it's only got 44k on the clock 🤔 thank you again for replying back!

You are right about it being the last V8 powered Cadillac sedan until Cadillac CT6. XTS was a let down. CT6 is nice. There are four things I do not like about this DTS: The headlight design, what is under the hood, the location of the seat controls and no digital gauge cluster. It is interesting that body ran as long as it did. The earlier ones had the right cluster and right headlight design. I will admit this car does have a lot of nice features too.
