@@flonought I often fall asleep with my tv on in the living room on my sofa so I feel like I should replace it with something like this.
@flonought
@flonought Күн бұрын
@@rubydawn1 Okay cool, it should work well for that; with the sofa bed down it's nice to be able to lean against the back rest (which also acts as the headboard). If you're a back sleeper people have commented they have experienced discomfort in that position, so something to be aware of. It's worth noting that after 6 months of everyday use, I've noticed the crease (when in bed mode) has gotten worse. It's slight but it's enough for me to notice at night; I tend to sleep on the same spot (side sleeper, 165 lbs, and 6ft tall). This could honestly vary from person to person depending on your height and where the crease hits you on your body, your body weight, sleeping position, etc. I'm going to talk about this more in my next video. This has been a real-time experiment for me since there were no video reviews when I purchased, but this seems to be best suited for a guest bed or something like your use case. I also still enjoy it as a regular sofa too. Hope this helps!

I also just moved to Seattle to a smaller space and bought this exact same couch!! I was looking for a review before I bought it but there isn't an unsponsored one to be found... until now:) It truly is a great sofa bed AND couch. I've had two guests sleep on it, and I slept on it for a few nights. It's also great for simply sitting on and watching TV. I'm glad you mentioned the crease - I'm a back sleeper so it did cause some discomfort for me, but I'm actually short enough to where I can lay sideways and avoid the crease all together if I so choose. Definitely something to think about for other people buying tho. Overall this was a great video and I'm glad there's finally a real review of the koala on the internet cause it truly is a great pick!

for sure, that is definitely something i’ll still be on the lookout for since it’s my full-time bed. my impression from researching was that it would be less maintenance/risk than the shikibuton/floor futon, but I understand it’s still a possibility if not cared for properly. i’m going to do an update video 3 to 6 months in to review how well it is holding up.

@@xxwoman in theory. It would still be something you should keep an eye out for regardless. The dehumidifier would be relying on proper airflow under the mattress and can only pull so much water in so much space. @flonought humidity isn't really a thing in Seattle. When I had a futon in the late 80s, early 90s, I usually had it on a foldable frame so it could go from bed to sofa easily. Best for studios, as you'd imagine. Kept it on the floor a few times in incredibly humid places including Mississippi and didn't really have a mold problem as I recall. Welcome to Seattle.

you’re welcome! it’s held up great. no, it stays in place. mattress is pretty firm as a sofa and bed, but comfortable and also helps for holding it’s shape; after 3 months it still looks brand new. as for how it compares to others, not sure i can be of much help there because i’ve had leather sofas for the past several years so going back to fabric has been new for me. but from a design perspective, i really like how it looks compared to others i researched. the side pillows, rounded corners for the side arms, and the fact that it sits pretty low to the ground are things i noticed right away that i like. but i also did a 2 month review on this and went into a little more detail if that helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2itmnSqlL5ne68si=1IkLy1jVHnsKZ5vW

@@TheRealvisionz Personally, I don’t like those. Usually I can feel the frame, they make the sofa in general much heavier (which is a bitch for moving), and usually there ends up being some kind of squeak. I can usually handle those at an Airbnb for a few nights, but there’s no way I would have one as a full time bed solution. If you didn’t watch my follow up review, I linked it below. I go into more detail about the crease. I did start to notice it, but I show a quick and easy solution that eliminated the small discomfort I was having from that. The quick answer is I move the mattress up about a fist’s width away from the back of the sofa kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2itmnSqlL5ne68si=fKQnyguA4ImwGEY0

Pseudo-futons were popular in the 1990s (go have a look at what Peer One was, and how much we loved paper lanterns.). Yet they were stigmatized as a thing convenient for students; you wouldn't want them in your adult life. We don't like mattresses flat on the floor. And the frames which tri-fold into a low couch looked like you had the seat of an old Ford in your living room. We didn't have the tatami rooms. We had pine frames, or none at all. The mats were stuffed with fiber, and the fiber crushed permanently. The pseudo-futons were also twice the thickness of Japanese futons because they weren't supported by the spring of a tatami floor. The weight discouraged you from putting it away daily.

I've slept on all sorts of surfaces, on the floor, on a sofa bed, on upper bunk, and on regular beds, and worked in different setups, whether sitting, standing, or even sitting on the floor. I grew up sleeping on the floor, like on a tatami mat, so I really like firm mattresses. But here's something I've learned: if you sleep on the floor, it’s better to work sitting or standing. Working while sitting on the floor can really strain your body. I’m comfortable sleeping on the floor, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re not used to it, a regular bed is probably a better choice unless you have to sleep on the floor. Ideally, I’d go for a regular bed and a workspace where I can switch between sitting and standing. The Koala bed is fine i think(not sure i had similar looking sofa bed), but it does lose its shape over time, which is to be expected. Maybe the one you use here will held up a bit longer.. it looks nice tbh. Sorry for the random pov 😆😆

After I learned about camping hammocks, I bought a stand that works indoors and IMO a hammock is really the best sleep. And if you think about it, around the world it's what people sleep on in the tropics, maybe right up there in numbers with people on futons. Currently I have a futon for when I take down the hammock stand because that takes up more space than even a queen bed and I'm in a 500 sq ft studio. But if I'm in a lot of body pain, I'll put up the hammock and see if it makes it better.

I like hammocks. I had futons for a decade or 2 and liked them - as when I rolled them up I rolled into a cover and then it was a cushion for sitting at my low table, getting double usage. It was challenging to keep in shape, if not a well made one, and I didn't always have areas to let it sit out in the sun for several hours- which is really good for keeping it fresh. I don't like couches and I don't like beds because to me they are big cumbersome and hard to clean around and to keep clean, then you need another at some point and the only thing to do with the old is take it to the dump. Newest best choice is a hammock. There are some tricky things to get in order with hammock sleeping but over all I find it worth it because even the most expensive hammock is less than 300 bucks, it can unhooked on one side and moved to other giving use of a full room, it is not to difficult to keep clean, reading and sleeping in a hammock is good for brain activation and comfort, it is easy to move when one needs to move, when it wears out it can be used as spare material for other things like bags, shirts, plant hangers... I am not using camping hammocks they are a different animal. To sleep comfortably and to avoid back issues one needs to sleep diagonally or perpendicularly to the hanging ends, not in the banana shape. That can be tricky depending upon the space and the hammock type- whether it is a woven macrame type or a solid woven cotton type. There are pros and cons to these types. I have both and use both. The other tricky thing is an underliner to keep warm because one wants to not have to have blankets or stuff in between the body and the hammock as it can bunch. I am so used to it now- it is 2nd nature, just as it was I don't know, 30 ,40 years ago, when I plopped in a bed. I love swaying to sleep in the hammock. I have no problem turning or moving around, though usually do not need to turn much, I can though and curl up or stretch out legs. Even kitties like it. 2 people can swing it, but I prefer my own space. Some people think it means being single. It doesn't. I guess I'd ask why people think beds are the only way to conjugal bliss. Just writing it as an idea for consideration.

thanks for sharing, i appreciate the different perspective. i'm pretty minimal when it comes to things, but not sure i could/would want to do a hammock full time. i love a good sofa for lounging during the day so that would be hard to give up. i also like to stretch out when sleeping, so i feel like i would constantly be swinging or tossing/turning on a hammock. i do agree with you about beds not being the only solution. everyone has different needs and/or preferences for how they sleep, so really depends on the person.

@@oliolioli. you’re welcome. okay cool, that’s good to know, appreciate the context. and i agree with you, those look very dated and usually are not that comfortable (or you get the creaks of the metal/springs when shifting). so here’s my long-winded answer that hopefully helps ya out. i looked at more sofa beds than i hoped to have looked at in my lifetime. the thing i noticed time and time again, is that a lot of them didn’t have a good aesthetic or if they did a minor detail would ruin it for me such as the sofa base being a weird color, the legs being too big or oddly shaped, the side arm rests being to thin or square (which makes it awkward or uncomfortable when laying down). i did look at other brands like article, ikea, burrow, sabai, and someone else mentioned ecosa (hadn’t heard of this one before) which seems to have some decent ones too. the other sofa bed i was really considering was the “omhu teddy” but i didn’t like that it is always on the floor. i was looking for something somewhat plain, with subtle style. something that looked cohesive. my main goals were also for a sofa, a bed, occasional nap, and something that looks good on camera for youtube; some textures can have that vibrating effect (i.e., a close striped shirt goes nuts on camera). and the last big one, was something that was easy to move by not requiring tools, and was not super heavy if i needed to move it by myself. with all that in mind, that’s what really had my attention with the koala sofa bed specifically the paper bark color. the arms were wide enough with round edges, the pillows have this light and airy look the way they flow over the sides, and the way they stitched the seam in the center makes it look more like a regular sofa. so for you, i think the koala would work well for what you’re looking for. the one thing worth mentioning is someone commented that it is somewhat uncomfortable for back sleepers. i’m a side sleeper so I could only speak to that in my video, but the good thing is that they have a good trial period so you have plenty of time to test it out and confirm it fits your needs. hope this helps! PS the follow up review for this is the next video i'm filming.

@flonought 4 ай бұрын
thank you! i believe it can, but it also depends on the size of the 3 people on the sofa. koala lists it on their website as a 3-seater. i haven’t had 3 people on it at once yet, but sitting on it by myself (especially if i take the side pillows off) there seems to be enough room. that’s a great question though and this is something i’ll work into my follow up review video. i bought this version mostly to be able to lay down comfortably when watching a show/movie. if that’s a priority for you and you’ll constantly have 3 people on it, in my opinion you may want to look for something a little bigger such as their “byron” sofa (which someone else did a youtube review on) or something else entirely.

How well does foam hold up to being sat on every day? I know if this was a traditional spring mattress, I wouldn't want this design because springs tend to break, and the place where your ass rests is a really bad place to not have support for your back when you're sleeping. The thing is, I have no idea how these new foams hold up
@flonought
@flonought 6 күн бұрын
So far so good for the sofa being that I’m about 6 months in with everyday use. I still love the quality and look of it. I do make sure to keep switching sides when I sit on it to keep it even. The only times I have noticed minor back pain is when I’m sitting for very long periods of time in the same position. It’s worth noting that I have noticed the crease more when using the sofa bed, but I’ve still been sleeping through the night. I did buy a traditional bed recently, with all of the recent cyber Monday sales, etc. Took measurements in my place and a queen bed should actually fit well with both sofas 🤞; I didn’t buy a bed originally mostly for space saving in my small apartment, but more so because I only saw my apartment on a video call prior to moving in (I didn’t get to see it in person). The sofa bed is still working out as a full time bed, but I believe it’s better suited for a guest bed (which is what it is actuallly intended to be). Mostly thought this would be a fun experiment to see how long I could use it as a full time bed and/or not get tired of using a sofa bed vs. a traditional bed. I’ll talk about all of this in more detail when I do my 6+ month review video.

I like the overal idea of a murphy bed, but modernized. You hit a button on your phone, it retracts into the wall, and when it's up, it reveals a sofa that goes down into a compartment in the floor when not in use. Minimalism is pretty pricey. I wonder how big of a difference it is to an Ikea futon
@flonought
@flonought 3 ай бұрын
to me minimalism isn’t about price. it’s about the value it brings to your life, depending on your needs, style, etc. that can be something that isn’t expensive, super expensive, or somewhere in-between. i’ll happily pay more for something if it brings me value and is both form and function. so it really comes down to what your needs are for whatever the item is; the price is subjective. however, a futon is different from a sofa bed and are also typically cheaper. if you look at ikea sofa beds they can get pricey too.

for a sofa bed i would say that’s average (based on my research) if you’re buying new. there are cheaper options out there, but no one has suggested something that’s cheaper and is actually comfortable to sleep on. you get what you pay for. do your research for what your needs are and maybe you’ll find you don’t need something at this price point. and you can also buy used (sites like FB marketplace) if you’re looking to save money, but just requires time to find a good deal and a trustworthy seller.

IKEA now has a sofa like this; but sofa base is stiff and sleeping position is the other way with feet on the hard base and head outwards. I don't think a mattress protector can wrap on the the IKEA sofa. I had a really cheap all-foam sofa like this in the mid-80's. Now everyone is asking for +$1,800 for single knock down furniture piece. Too much for me.

I will say that I spent $1,000 this year on a hammock stand but it is one that I can take camping and set up indoors. So the double usefulness value on that was what made me get it. Plus the stand maker is very active in our camping group and very responsive to questions about their new design. I can't beat that. So thinking about it, I've spent a good deal on camping hammocks and a stand was a value-added buy to my hobby. The downside is it takes up even more space than a bed frame. But setup and takedown time is about comparable to your sofa bed build. And I fall asleep very fast in a hammock, faster than I do on the floor. And that might be a thing from transferred noises from other apartments is less in the hammock due to being raised. Being on a futon on the floor in a cheap apartment building is not helpful to me. I got a very thin memory foam futon and didn't know enough about the straw mats so ended up with a thin rush grass mat. It all works enough and I donated the bed frame to Goodwill and still sit on the CordaRoys bag as a couch.
@flonought
@flonought 2 ай бұрын
yeah that color seems to be common for apartment floors (it was in my other one too). $1800 is expensive, but some brands like koala are much better quality compared to others out there. but i understand that a sofa bed as a full time bed is not for everyone. it’s really geared for the person living in a smaller space that wants to save space, but i’m sure a regular smaller bed may work for others too (or a regular size bed if they are not concerned with the amount of space it takes up). really just offering my perspective because i figured it would connect with others who are facing a similar situation. at the end of the day, people need to find and use what works best for their lifestyle or alter this to fit their needs; others have mentioned they wanted a smaller sofa in their home office (or similar) to use as a guest bed.

Better than being with people who leave foolish comments like this…maybe a relationship isn’t what he is seeking right. Maybe he is simply seeking peace of mind…which is perfectly fine and healthy.

@@JNS314 spot on, which is typically why i don’t put energy back into comments like these. but i recognize that maybe something is happening in their life that makes them leave a comment like this, so i don’t take it personally. however, this comment did make me laugh. but you’re right, being single has brought me peace and the ability to focus entirely on my goals. i’ve learned from previous relationships that there was stuff i needed to work on, so being on my own has allowed me to do that. i don’t want to be single forever, but i’m in no rush.

All you need is yourself. It's nice if we can share life with someone but sometimes it just doesn't work that way and that's okay. In the end all we need is ourselves.
@flonought
@flonought 3 ай бұрын
@@gigimunguia5136 i agree with half of that because being by yourself teaches so damn much about yourself. everyone should live on their own (preferably earlier on in life, something my parents always told me growing up) to be with their own thoughts, weirdness, etc. however, close family and friends have got me through some shit in life. at minimum, even one close friend or someone to talk to and/share things with, even if it’s sometimes just sharing silence together, goes a long way for your mental health.

Over $1000 for a sofa bed that doesn’t even have a dedicated mattress separate from the couch cushions 😳
@flonought
@flonought 3 ай бұрын
if that’s your conclusion, you seem to have missed the point of the video. the goal was to find something that looks good, is lightweight, comfortable as a sofa and as a bed, and easy to put together/breakdown (no tools) when moving to other apartments. a sofa bed with a dedicated mattress doesn’t automatically make it more comfortable, and it increases the overall weight of the sofa bed. but if you have a suggestion for a sofa bed that meets the parameters you set, i’m all ears. that may be helpful for someone else on here looking for that style of sofa bed.

so i understand if it's not something you like, but you gave absolutely no context as to why other than you think the price tag is too high. it's comments like this that make buying things online hard when doing research. so take an extra few minutes and explain to people why you don't like it. maybe tell them what you're use case was for buying it (sofa, occasional guest bed, full-time bed, etc.), is it too firm, did you not like the material, how long have you had it for, did you utilize the trial period, how was your experience with the koala customer service team, or so many other things that you could talk about.

Enjoyed seeing your hairy legs and backside view. Otherwise, I don't have anything constructive or complimentary to ssy about your video or the subject matter. Hopefully, your move to Seattle will turn out to be a happy and successful decision. Be well! P.S. The KZbin algorithm goddess is a cruel mistress.

well the first bit of that wasn’t necessary to actually leave a comment about. and that’s okay, not everything has to be constructive/complimentary; i knew at least that much to be true with wanting to get into this whole youtube thing in the first place. it can be quite vulnerable at times to put yourself out there. but thank you, it very much has been a good decision. still adjusting but learning a lot in the process. i imagine it’s going to be one of those life decisions to look back on and be thankful i took the opportunity.
