I bought a new Squier contemporary telecaster with the roasted neck with jumbo frets, and high output humbucks... Sold my fender deluxe strat and my fender tele. People that get hung up on name on the headstock, or where it was made, have some deep seeded unresolved issues, or something. Imo of course

I am definitely a Jazzmaster guy, however, I don't own a Fender. I have found Squier Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified are PERFECT right out of the box. You don't need to upgrade or replace anything. They are perfect.

The system only works when you work with the system. Those 2 guitars you want to sell will not put themselves on Reverb. They'll just keep sitting in the cases under the bed and keep you from buying that custom shop edition you know you have to have! So I've heard....

completely agree. to put that same thing another way. there are times when I get an itch for a certain kind of non-standard guitar and very often the less expensive version of that non-standard guitar does a great job of scratching that itch without the need to spend thousands on the higher end version.

I just bought the identical Squier jazz master 40th anniversary for $350 used. I grew up playing a 64 jazz master which was my brothers guitar. He still has it but he let me use it in my band until I bought my Les Paul and I really like it. It plays really nice. It has a great sound. I was shocked at how well it was put together I had a 60th anniversary Mexican Stratocaster in the identical color scheme desert sand with the cold anodized pick guard which I stupidly sold. So when I saw this, it exactly the same color scheme for that price. I jumped on it and I am very happy I have about 15 guitars I don’t get rid of them. I just keep stacking them.

I have 17 guitars now and have never made the rule to getting rid of one before picking up another. With that being said I am ready to release 8 to 10 guitars back into the wild as I know what works for me and the way I play.

Great video as always Rob! I just did the same thing! I had a fairly expensive Fender American Original 60's Jass Bass and just sold it because I found a Squire 40th Anniversary P Bass that just blew me away. The tone was more of what I was looking for, I like the neck feel/ shape better, the frets are really well done on this particular Square (definitely not on all of the ones I played in the store), and it is nice and lightweight. All that and it is 1/5 the cost. I admit I have a bit of brand snobbery in me but it has been fading A LOT between this bass, a couple of Eastmans I own, and a few PRS SEs I have recently played. Personal tip: play the electric guitar you are thinking of buying acoustically against a few other guitars before plugging it in. There can be a huge difference, even within the same model. Get the one that sounds best to you acoustically. I have been down every rabbit hole with mods. They can make a difference but the inherent sound is the most important factor, IMHO, and long experience.

And my response to the 40th Anniversary P-Bass was just the opposite. I'm not really a big P-Bass fan, but I have a couple of parts-caster P-Basses that I assembled just to have and like them both, but the Squier was a steal on sale, and seemed so much better than the two clones I have, and the build quality is fine on it, and the neck could not feel worse to me, the radius, the neck width, and the pickup is not to my liking. Demonstrates how much different players have completely different experiences, even on completely identical instruments too

@@offbeatbassgear I agree. To each their own. I played another 40th, and it was noticeably worse, especially the fret work. For me and my hands, the one I stumbled upon is damn near perfect in that regard. I may toy around with another pickup, but the one in my particular bass sounds quite good. I am hoping I can find a 40th J similar to my P because I like it so much. Again, this all shows how different they can be within the same model.

Good move! I have a '97 Squier Affinity Strat that I paid $149 with the formed Fender case for my son. He played for a year and then it sat. I picked it up a few years back and swapped the pickups and reset the neck and it is on par with my '74 American Strat. If I had to sell one, I'd definitely sell the Fender and use the additional cash for a new archtop.

With a series like affinity, I’d be curious about the neck warping after however many years it had been. I’ve noticed on the seriously cheap squiers that things like fretwork and neck, end up really feeling like a cheap guitar. That being said, the higher end squiers like classic vibe series I always love picking up and playing because they feel great and they’re so affordable that playing them doesn’t just feel like a fantasy hahaha

@@RSIDNTmusic The only issues I've had with this one since new is a bit of fret sprout around the 7th and 8th frets back at new. Hammered and polished and they've been fine since. No neck problems of any sort otherwise.

It's not quite the same one that Chris Buck has, which is the J Mascis JM. I also have the JMJM and previously had a Fender AVRI Road Worn as well and I, too, opted to sell the Fender in favor of the Squier. I almost immediately regretted it since the Fender was an amazing guitar that I now miss quite often. The Squier is still great, but it falls quite a bit short of the Fender.

Same deal as my Mexican Strat. I just play my Gibson guitars most of the time, but sometimes I want a Strat sound. Then I decide I really like the sound of Strats when other folks play them, but not when I do. Rather than continuing the cycle of buying Strats only to sell them six months later, I got the Mexi. There's not enough money tied up in it to consider selling it, but it is good enough to scatch the itch when I get it (I have a loaded pick guard off a YJM Strat in it). Downside is it is not valuable enough to do any major upgrades to, e.g., stainless frets, or the fancy Callahan bridge thingy, etc (Mexi Strats have more Squire specs really, e.g., narrow six screw holes and string spacing, etc -- maybe tuner hole size too, but I have not measured that yet). I do like the neck though, so maybe I will do the upgrades. I dunno yet. Just paid for a Strymon Zuma PSU and am now mustering the coin to import a Friedman IR-X for running to DAW. NZ dollar is a bit weaker lately. Bugger. I only have two other guitars. Both Gibson. One is a reissue '61 SG Standard. The other is a 1990s Les Paul Studio that kicks arse so well I never think about trading up to a fancier model. It has stainless frets installed on an ebony finger board. It's ebony finish too. Pups are both creme. A Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and 36th Anniversary PAF in the neck. I also added gold speed knobs. Currently tuned Eb with Hybrid Slinky strings. Awesome playing, sounding and looking too. I put my Whole Lotta Humbucker set in the SG. Great gat, but I do not like the little frets Gibson uses. I guess they use them for tradition's sake. If they change specs people complain, e.g., maple necks in the 1970s are much stronger, but folks demanded Gibson return to flimsy mahogany. Perhaps I should have got a SG Modern, because they have sensible upgrades like that. I like the classic look though. When I tell myself I prefer function over form, I am not being completely honest with myself; lol.

So, when I got my 2010 Les Paul I traded my 2017 Telecaster for it. But when I got my 2012 Les Paul I gave my Squire Tele Thinline to my daughter. And I stored my Toronado away for her as well.

Last year I found a taylor 324 in a pawn shop for a great price. I couldn't pass it up, but before I put the money down, I made a list of five guitars I could sell to pay for it. Was able to sell them within 2 weeks. Thinning the herd can feel really good when you are simultaneously exchanging them for a much better instrument.

I have a deal worked out with my wife .. When I want a new guitar, I save up money for it and get it .. Then my wife suggests I sell one or more of the guitars I have, and I say "no, that's absolute crazy talk" and we agree to disagree (lovingly) .. But - I *am* at the stage now where, similar to what you're saying about the Fender vs Squier, I am only interested in buying a guitar that is really, really worth it, or in the case of my latest Telecaster, a Classic Vibe was the perfect price and is plenty of guitar for it's purpose in my musical life

As someone who had previously dismissed Squier as "poor man's Fender" I have to say that having had my Squier Classic Vibe 50s Strat for about 5 years or so now, they have truly come a long way in terms of quality. Sure, there is a reason that actual Fender guitars are priced much higher than their Squier counterparts, but the difference can mostly be made up for with a few simple and relatively cheap mods, and you will still most likely end up having spent less than if you had bought the Fender.

My decision on what to sell and what to keep was actually pretty simple. I had guitars that I almost never picked up, and one that I would invariably grab off of the wall. I have this 93 American Standard strat that I bought brand new, and played all of the time. I also had three 60s Gibsons, a Takamine acoustic steel string and a Yamaha classical, all of which I had to dust off regularly because they hadn't moved in months. The obvious solution was to just rip the bandage off. I sold everything but the strat. I also have an Ibanez bass, but, that doesn't count as a guitar.

By comparison; will be in the market for an acoustic soon. Done some hands on and the situation isn't really analogous to electric. Close, maybe, however ease of utility curves sharply upward with expensive models. And after a certain point don't care about the smaller differences in price or sound. Primarily look, scale length, nut width and body size and then deciding between The Country Boy, The Choir Boy and The Rocker. Could give up sleep and food, work harder and get all three. Answer found!

A Squier is more than fine, especially when you do some upgrades. I bought a CV 70’s Jaguar and modded everything. Tuners, harness, pickups, trem, knobs, etc. Only thing original is the body and neck. The luthier loved it after the upgrades and said he’s played custom shops that aren’t as nice. Even with the upgrades I was nowhere near the price of a Fender American Jaguar.

I've got this same one, but I got the black Chicago Music Exchange edition. I really like the way it sounds and plays. I love to use it for cleans and ambient layering. I used it in my 'Love Hate Love' cover. I layered it with my Les Paul Custom for the clean parts. I ran out through the AC30 setting on my Syn30 amp and I used the CLA, from Waves, Reverb + Delay effects, with just a bit of chorus and I think it sounded great. As a lefty, I have to buy what I ever want to play....so, I go through lots of guitars and follow your scheme....Sold 3 in recent weeks...got a few more on the chopping block...picked up a couple hand-wired amps (my first, love 'em!!)...still have about 20 guitars...perhaps end with 12 as I'm now in my early 60's and really appreciate Teles most of all.

My squier 70s classic vibe jaguar is my work horse providing me with a range of sounds. While i might want a old fender someday i think it intimidates me with its cost and value. The squier is approachable but capible. I have a five guitar rule, forcing me to choose carefully and purposefully if something goes there is a reason, if it stays its got something i want

For me it's about the purpose of the guitar. I don't want redundancy. Jazzmasters aren't "my thing" so I only need 1. Having variations to that only makes sense if you are a Jazzmaster guy like Ryan/60 Cycle Hum. RE: Squire guitars, I absolutely love mine. I have a Jazzmaster CV and a 50's CV strat. I got them to mod and have only completed the strat. I don't like buying nice parts twice. Get one with good bones and spend your money on the fancy parts that suit you. Things like polishing frets/ends, updating electronics, all fairly easy to do.

If word around the internet is of any validity, it would seem that Squire has been knocking it out of the park the past year or so, and seems to keep getting better. When you start seeing videos like Squire putting Fender to shame, and Squires are now better than Gibson, it's hard not to take notice. It seems like they are getting to a point where you can save a few hundo by buying a Squire instead of Fender and spending an extra hour or so that the factory didn't to give Squires to give it that top end fit and feel. (No offense to the factories. In most cases, they do the job they are paid too.) The same can be said for a lot of "cheaper" guitars, but the buzz indicates that Squire really seems to be getting you a lot closer to that fit and feel lately. I inherited an older Squire strat from early 2000's and it was garbage until I put some time into it. I had to take the neck off and re-seat it before I could proceed to any of the other setup steps. It's still the least favorite guitar I own, but it's not trash anymore. I do have a Maestro Les Paul I got for $20 bucks and a guitar that seems like it was distributed by Chicago Musical Instruments Co. in the 70's for $15, but that came with a nice cloth covered Gator case that was damn near mint and worth at least twice as much as I paid for it and the guitar together. But, I haven't even put strings on it and it's been about a year and a half now. (IDK what everyone's opinion of a lot is, but I'm not short on guitars, so it hasn't been a priority.) I was hoping to set up the Maestro and re-sell it for $40-$60, but when I got it home and on the bench I found out the neck was warped. Just a little, but enough to where I don't want to sell it to some kid starting out and destroy their ambitions. I've seen it happen several times where people abandon their journey before it ever begins because they feel like no matter what they do, they always sound like crap. 99% of the time it was the instrument, not them. But, when your instrument sounds like crap you don't hear yourself improving, and that becomes disheartenment, then abandonment. As far as the CMI is concerned. I plugged it in, tapped the pickups and flipped the switches to make sure they work. (Being a 70's guitar, it's got a few mustang style toggles that just make it look cool. Kind of why I bought it.) I still haven't been able to 100% ID it, but all of my research combined with where I live points to it being a CMI guitar.

i used to own a fender american pro precision bass. loved the thing. then i got my hands on a cheap $150 SX pj bass with 'american' ash body and maple neck. i quickly sold the fender pbass. the SX felt just as good, has the versatile PJ config, a comfy jazz neck/profile. out of the amp, the fender had a bit more oomph but that's a simple pup replacement of around $200. $350 still beats the $1500 bass imo

I have two squires. A telecaster and a J. Masic. They take forever to get in tune and stay in tune for about 10 minutes. I blame most of it on the ratio of the tuners.

The Fender Player Jazzmaster does not have the additional tone controls that were in the original JM, whereas the Squier does. That alone would be the reason for me.

i own the same Squier Jazzmaster and i love it but it has some flaws. The neck is much narrower than Squier tells us on their HP. The nutwidth is 41,6 mm instead of 42,8 mm and the wider Neck was one main reason why i bought it. I asked Thomann if my guitar is an exception but they told me all of them have a 41,6 mm nutwidth. So i wrote Fender and asked what happened and they told me that the nutwidth can varify about 1,5 mm´s which is for me a joke because for me thats clear a different neckfeel. The Tremolo also rattles a lot, the Nut was also not correct filed but i will keep it because it sounds really great but i will change the neck with a wider one from Fender. Did you have any issues with this guitar in the beginning? Greetings ✌

I don't know. The Squier 40th anniversary Jazzmaster vintage is definitely a more solid build that the Classic Vibe in my opinion. Since I got it, I can absolutely tell the difference. My fretboard is absolutely clean. Nothing even slightly rough, so I may have gotten lucky. Only thing was the color. I really wanted the sand, but the seafoam was on a ridiculous sale, so seafoam it was. And my wife allowed it because of the price. Win win. I'm stoked. Killer deal on a killer guitar that actually can be a lead. Check out Chris Buck from Cardinal Black. The sand color Squier Jazzmaster is one of his main guitars. Yup yup. Oh! And 10th. Lol

Rob, dang, I ran into some bad times about 15 years ago, I had around 24 guitars some of them where 1 offs that I got from Gibson and Fender, but now that I am back in the good, I am trying to get those guitars back. My wife wants me to be more like you! LOL. I may not be as good lookin (LOL), but I think I was scared by having to sell all my guitars to pay bills, now I can't let go of any that I have today. But I do employ your approach to "well what advantage does this guitar give me." I don't play out anymore, just a rock star in my own bedroom, so it is a bit crazy to have so many. I love my guitar herd, still have a couple of more to add, but, I will take your advice, if it brings joy, buy it! If not, trade it in!

I'm waiting for the moment my nephew gets interested in electric guitars (he's taking classic guitar lessons now) so that I could give him my Squire strat that I don't use at all, free up some space and buy a DGT SE. So for me, having 3 electric guitars (not that much) it's more about the storage space. And I definitely won't get rid of the LPJ or the CU24-08 SE.

I just sold a lower end Ibanez RG. It was a really good guitar, but I wasn’t playing it, I needed lessons, but I didn’t have the time or money for that, so after owning it for 6 years I decided to sell it. It was my only guitar. I figured it was better to move it on to someone who would actually play it, than for it to collect dust and rot away. So my dream of playing a guitar is pushed to the back burner for a while, probably a long while unfortunately. I just want to be good enough to put together a few people and have some fun. Maybe someday….

If you get one - you sell one. Good way to keep your G.A.S. in check! So how big is the collection? I've only sold 3 guitars ever - a Fender Strat, a Jackson Randy Rhodes, and a Squire bullet. The Bullet is the only one I miss. Excellent licks - as usual dude!

My uncle has bought and sold guitars since the 60s. He got a Squier Bullet in 2000, sold it, bought it back from the guy he sold it to and then sold it again 2 years later. even to this day he says he made a mistake selling it. I told him to buy another - he said I was missing the point XD

@@nudesoftheworld Mine was probably a '98 or '99 Squire Bullet. Maybe they had really good build quality around that time. I bought mine to use the neck for a guitar build. When I took the Bullet apart, it was flawless! So, I put it back together with some cosmetic upgrades and kept it.

Buying another new Bullet now (if they even still make them) would not be the same - even if it's a genuine Fender Squire Bullet (two guitars made by Squire's hands). And finding a used one - odds are it would not be flawless like my original was (it wouldn't be "that" guitar). "Correct" builds go by many names - "flawless", "perfect" and guitars with "mojo". When you find such a build, everything else of that type pales in comparison.

I only have one electric right now which is a HH. I want a single coil for my next guitar. I've been jumping between this, a Classic Vibe Jazzmaster, or the Vintera Jazzmaster. I played the Classic Vibe and it was pretty nice, but I want a satin neck. So I'm debating this one or the Vintera. Or something completely different.

I have a 40th just like the one you’re playing and really think it’s a great guitar. Bought it used on a whim. I have others like a Tele Ultra that are pretty refined by comparison but this Squire Jazzmaster is a hoot to play with good build quality for the money.

I’ve never owned a Fender and can afford one but the the 3 Squier Teles I have (mid 2000’s Standard, 50s CV, 70s CV custom) sounded and play so great for so little $, even after comparing them against their Fender USA/Mexico versions, I just don’t find the value there. Plus I’ve noticed Indonesian made Squiers tend to be nearly all winners punching way above their weight in quality/playability.

I'm bad; I can't sell my guitars since I've sold my first... I feel like I've deserted the one that started the passion of guitar playing. Since then, I never sold one... I now have 33 guitars and each one has their own voice... I talk differently with each at times because of the tonal qualities and their like friend's... Eddie Van Halen called it tone chasing not only with amps and effects but, with the guitar mainly. So much so that he made the Frankenstrat...

I only play good enough to own 2 Squier Classic Vibe guitars 😂. But love them both. 70's Starcaster and a great 50's Telecaster and I happy with them.

I have a candy apple red Squier VM Jazzmaster that I'm thinking of selling because I have too many guitars and it's easily replaceable. On the other hand, they aren't worth much on a trade or resale. Also, I bought a used molded SKB case (useless for anything other than offset Fenders) to protect it so I might as well keep it. I like to play it now and then, with tremolo and reverb, of course, because they're a perfect surf guitar. There is also the urge to install a Fender CuNiFe/Cobalt pickup set in it.

Between guitars and basses I think I have 5 total, so I’m no collector, but I will say, telecasters have always been my favorite guitar, even if they don’t always fit the scenarios I play in. Personally, I invested in an American tele, then stepped down the quality for the other genre guitars I needed, because I always wanted to hear the greatest potential out of the guitar that I loved the most

I wanted to get in to guitar again and was SUPPOSED to sell one of my basses. I have a '97 Pedulla Thunderbolt 5, all original, I never play. The neck and fretboard are great on that bass. But.... with the trade and the telecaster I wanted I still would have owed like $1100+. So I kept the Pedulla and got a Fender Vintera 50s modified telecaster for $900. Man that thing sounds SWWWWEEEEEET. Now if I can adapt to the tiny neck. 😂

I hold a lot of Sentimental value to all of my guitars. A of them mean something to me. I don't think I will ever get rid of any unless I absolutely have to.

I don’t own enough guitars to be in the territory of needing to sell them but I am about to buy a Jazzmaster and I have considered how much I’m actually going to use it when deciding on which model to go for. I currently play a 2008 Fender MIM Strat 75% of the time and a 2007 Squier Jagmaster 25% of the time. I still envisage the Strat being my main instrument so I think I’m going to go Squier again, rather than buy the signature TVL Fender that my heart wants.

Yeah in the past couple of years. Classic vibes too. Really big headaches with three of them (JM, Jaguar and Tele). I had the same idea as Robert…. Replace my Fenders with something less expensive. Did not work out at all.

I have to admit, I don't play very much & not really any good but I own a lot of guitars. Must be around 20. Same with amps n pedals. My income is low as. I just can't decide on what to sell, so some are in my Van / mobile home & some in storage. ??? Love them all. Even some of the cheapest are my go to's.

When I was deciding on which jazzmaster to get I was really set on the Am Pro II but then came across this same 40th anniversary Squier. In the end I chose the Squier because I didn't think the Am Pro II was worth almost $2k more (at least here in Canada). Even if I got the Am Pro II, I realized I would still want to change the pickups, bridge and trem and if that was the case then why spend that much more for a bunch of parts I won't even use.

The Fender Road Worn series from about 10 years ago was the best value JM for the money. Now they go for huge amounts. That's one I wish I had back.

A local shop I do business with has an Olympic White Pro Tone Strat on Reverb right now, I looked at it but the voice in my head said no more guitars, well, to be honest it ‘s not my voice, I would never say that, it ‘s my wife’s 😢

There is a lot to be said for having a guitar that is "good enough" and enjoying the hell out of it, rather than sinking a whole lot more money into something that is "better" but in the end really brings nothing to the table other than bragging rights.

I don't know what it means to sell a guitar. But then again, all my guitars range from cheap cheap to modestly expensive (Gibson Les Paul Studio, Gibson SG Standard). I wouldn't think any of them were particularly valuable to anyone but me. They'll probably be going to my grandchildren when I'm gone.

That's a really smart economical move. My first non-student type guitar was a Strat. I tried both MIM and MIA at Guitar Center, and I came home with the MIM. It was half the price (mind you, this was 2004) and was amazing for me. She felt good. She's Gabrielle. The American Strat just wasn't twice as good, and I would have regretted the less expensive one staying behind. I always opt for affordability.

I had a Fender TWL Jazzmaster that I sold because I never played it and it didn't really speak to me. Great guitar, but not for me. Got a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster instead that feels better and also sound really good.

In regards to that Les Paul in the beginning, I feel the need to tell people who don’t care that I love the way P90’s sound but I hate the way they look 🤦🏻‍♂️ who cares, I know lol

My first rule is to find a friend or relative who will buy the outgoing guitar. That way I can still play it on the sly. (Friend w/ benefits)

I just did the same thing with a f and sq bass IV. The fender just wasn't better, let alone 900 bucks better. I've bought over 35 guitars in the last few years, to really educate myself and I'm done spending over $1500. There's just not enough difference in value between "mid priced" and expensive guitars. Several of the ones I play most, cost thousands less than some of the others....

Gotta admit I prefer the squier Jazzmaster over my 2011 mex fender strat. I did how ever change the pickups to the new j masic pickups. Not because the stock ones where bad. It’s because I’m more into that kinda scene I guess. Either way the guitar rules even learned how to file frets end 😂
