Sold Out: Affordable Housing at Risk

The voices of tenants and owners, advocates and elected officials raise the urgency and opportunity to address the loss of affordable housing in a new documentary. Produced by Twin Cities PBS, in partnership with local advocates and funders, “Sold Out: Affordable Housing at Risk” reveals the price we all pay when families are pushed out of our communities as modestly priced units are replaced with upscale developments.

When I first tried to rent an apartment in Oakland ,California , I was discriminated against by the White landlord ;this happened in 1968. from that point of my life , I decided that I would never rent again !!! I was 19 years old and had a postal job ;thus I moved back home to my parents home and sold my 1968 Camaro and worked all of the overtime that was offered and after three to four years of saving and working long hours ,I purchased my first new home in 1974 . I would tell anyone ,that if you have a well paying job ,one of the first projects that one should do ,is to purchase a home !!! You will find out that you will have peace of mind and won't have to worry about greedy land lords jacking up the rent on you every year or two years for no apparent reason but greed.

Halalujah! Someone who gets it!!! Instead of crying and whining about how unjust everything is, people need to rise above and better themselves so that they're independent and not at others' mercy!!!

Okay, I'll ask. Where are the lower income residents supposed to go? Public housing is being torn down nationwide, or privatized and gentrified, pricing the not so well off out of their homes. So are regular Americans not deserving of safe affordable housing? SHAMEFUL.

Why are poor people having kids? You can't afford yourself but you started a family... That's the damn problem. The man bought the place and he can do what he wants. They're mooching from the government let their elected officials build something for them

I'm in Manitoba not too far away from you guys. we have the same problem here as well. also quite some time ago, they Government has decided to use that exact idea, take older buildings to make it for low income people. But now the rich people are trying to buy up these buildings to make low income people homeless. I'm a person with a disability and not all of us low income people are bad people.

My best tenants are on Section 8. The rent is never late.

chief tp I guess I’ve had really good luck with tenants. Just normal wear and tear is all I’ve had to deal with. Most of my tenants are elderly or disabled. That might have something to do with it.

You're on section 8 with 4 children? And all 4 are autistic? 😫 Jesus Christ I don't blame them. You feel of irresponsibility. You're depending on the tax payers and you added FOUR more to do so? WTF woman? Gosh y'all are a trip 😒

The verbiage relating to affordability and choice changed dramatically once the former homebuyers could no longer qualify for housing loans. It reminds me of food insecurity which when experienced primarily by non “whites” was considered indolence and child neglect.

This documentary brings to mind the lyrics of the Digger's song from 1649. Shows how little changes, the rich acting like ruthless bastards, isn't new sadly........ Here's some of the words it brrings to mind..... All men of property we do disdain, no man has any right to buy and sell the earth for private gain, by theft and murder, they took the land, now everywhere the walls rise up at their command. You poor take courage, you rich take care! The earth was made a common treasury for everyone to share! All things in common, all people one! They came in peace, the orders came to cut them down.

It's prejudice to approve of those who make more. Politics are pushing the poor out and homeless. U don't buy apartments and then evict everyone .they should be paid $10,000 each

My problem is the contradiction of establishing rent controls but forcing owners to maintain the property. As a homeowner, I can tell you maintenance ain’t cheap especially in a housing bubble. Has the thought occurred that the reason landlords can’t maintain a property is because of low rents. “ so it’s like “ I want you to charge me low rent then I want you to maintain the property while I tear it up? That’s ridiculous. If you want low rent, help with maintenance. My mother charged low rent in exchange for minor maintenance and it worked pretty well.

What I've learned from this program is that government has absolutely no business in the housing market. Government policies fail citizens from seeking and securing affordable housing.
