I lived in Kensington Market and adored it. But I was on welfare and the area is now going up in price and I had to leave about three and a half years ago. I was lucky, I found someone to share a place with in Scarborough. We are both on disability. We are on a list for rent to income housing, but it will be years before we can have a place. Meanwhile the rent goes up and up.

That would be Nazism and it is not currently a legal choice on the ballot. You will never get redress that means anything or works from the existing political parties or the courts because they are guilty. The government approves of white genocide in all its forms otherwise none of those forms would be allowed and they are because they are policy. They think that if they are subtle and tell lies about it no one will notice or complain about it untill it is too late. What is white genocide? It is the imposition of anything that results in a world with fewer white people especially as a matter of policy. It involves everything from outright murder, miscegenation, assault, psychological warfare, social engineering , deprivation of habitat by any means, population replacement ,prevention of births by any means and transference of children from one group to another by any means. Under the Genocide convention there are no social constructs or market forces as a defence against being charged.

It is also happening in the US. Seattle is building like mad (over 50 cranes up for almost 3 years), even will all the new apartments rents continue to climb with no rent control. Housing is un-affordable for all but those in tech. Little to no housing is being built for low income and seniors at affordable prices.

Hi folks. It is the exact same issue down here in the States where I live, both in all of the big cities, but even in cheaper, more rural states where I live like Maine. Portland Maine (population 60,000) has seen massive increases in rents the past 5-10 years that do not keep pace in any way with our new $10 minimum wage. My sister's rent for her 1 bedroom in a Boston suburb (with a 1970s kitchen and bathroom) as recently as 3.5 years ago was $1k a month. The same place goes for double this now. DOUBLE.

I moved to a 3 story apartment building located in Scarborough. For the last 15 years rent has been only a $140 monthly expense. Each apartment has its own furnace/water-heater combo. It's a one bedroom apartment. Being poor, I have no mobile phone, and I use air antenna to watch TV for free. On a good day I get up to 50 free channels. The sad part is that I have to survive on an ODSP income of only $812 per month. That's about the same as though you worked 37.5 hours per week on a $5.00 per hour salary. Minimum wage in Toronto is $14.00, so what I get is about minimum wage divided by 2.80. That is why it is called the Ontario Disability Support Program. It is so low an income, that it supports disability, not people.

No Fixed Address, sounds like it should be expanded to include homeless, and those who are living in cars, vans, campers in Canadian and USA cities. I just mean that the dialog needs to be expanded. In the USA some cities have an Affordable Wage or Living Wage. One of the first cities was Santa Monica on the coastal western side of Los Angeles. They looked at the basic reality that hotel & restaurant workers were unable to live near their work. Many commuting 2 hours each morning to travel to work by car or bus(a terrible urban transit system by the way.). They increased the minimum wage and it allowed people to rent closer to work. A win-win.

The reason that the rule in the 90s took effect was to promote developers to build new apartment building for rent only. The problem is the opposite has happened with condos popping up everywhere owned by foreign investors who are playing the system. The government can now bring in rent control for all buildings because the incentive obviously has not worked.

Problem is the type of housing being built downtown and a lack of understanding by many. Luxury condos are being built everywhere. They are not being built for people with low income or minimum wage jobs. There needs to be more low income housing built and that is the responsibility of the government. Rent controls do not work! They just push up rents in the long run. Land is expensive especially downtown. The costs for an investor to buy and maintain a property are high and thus is reflected in the rent. There needs to be a bit more critical thinking here. Supply and demand will always dictate pricing. It’s simple economics. Need to deal with the supply side and maybe lower income earners should move out of the core or increase income. Why is this never a solution?

Even if you moved out of the city it costs money to commute, I lived in Mississauga and went to school in Toronto 10 years ago so I can only imagine what the costs are now. Factor in costs for the GO and TTC or gas and parking plus the extra 2 hours of time spent in transit each day. Your 40hr work day goes up to 50 and that's not always easily adaptable. I don't blame her for wanting to live close to her job, it's the laws around how much a landlord can increase that have failed her and I say this after living in BC for these last 10 years. This is showing that if it's hard to rent on her income it's devastating to the rest of renters that are making less. She's really trying to use her public position and give voices to everyone else's story.

My son is a Toronto paramedic, not a bad salary but, very long hours. He ended up homeless for a week and then rented a short term room while looking for an apartment. He finally found a basement apartment but, he is a shift worker and the landlord upstairs has three toddlers who run all day while he needs to sleep after night shifts. He can't move because there is no where reasonable to move to!! Toronto is HELL for those who are middle income and it should not be this way. I hope to god he can get hired full time outside of this city for the rich because those are the only people who can afford to live here. Nice city if you are wealthy. These young people are going where the jobs are but, they have no where to live they can afford. His 1st apartment there was a slum lord, dangerous conditions, second he shared a sublet but, had to get out after one year. Third this run down place in a basement with loud people upstairs. It's no life at all. Work and go "home" to a place that is awful. We live in Kingston . God I hope he can get hired away from this miserable city of Toronto one day. There is NO FUTURE there for low or middle income people.

We have enough refugees and as a white man and a member of the race that founded and created Canada I can say that I have been turned into a refugee by government policies, real estate prices and low pay rates. We don't need to import more people, we need to stop turning our people into refugees and focus on creating conditions of life conducive to their obtaining a proper life style and family life through work, proper legal and policy reform and defending the common good. Part of that includes real estate price abatement and regulation.

That only works if you suppress home prices and outlaw price appreciation and real estate profiteering. Home ownership is good. This is a crisis not only in Canadian cities but in the States as well. All the major companies decided they needed to be in cities to attract millennials and as a result now all of the desirable jobs are in big cities, so the demand for rent in the cities has sky rocketed. Mix foreign investors, NIMBYs not wanting more dense development, etc and you have recipe for working homeless people.

the worst part they they didn't bring up is people's are destroying their credit to pay their current rent and falling behind on bills just to have a roof over their heads...than when they can't afford the rent increase they can't get a new apartment because their credit is bad. checking someone's credit to decide if they are eligible to rent should be illegal, and yes I know that it's not a requirement for the tenant..they have no choice additionally, landlords are getting there credit report illegally by using family and friends in the real estate business.
@gjune36

But what about landlords wanting to protect themselves from tenant who can't afford to pay rent in the long run. Would you ask them to risk their investment on a someone they know next to nothing?
@crystialst3203
@crystialst3203 7 жыл бұрын
G June36 as a home owner and past renter I can't tell you from experience that credit checks do nothing to insure that rent will be paid. now as far as risking an investment property on someone they know next to nothing about, they risk that credit check or not.. credit checks do not show past rental history or if the tenant has ever been in arrears in payment on rent, hence they are useless and prevent tenants that pay their rent from getting an apartment. moreover, the tenant is usually in a weaker position as witnessed in the above video. furthermore, becoming a landlord is risky in itself and if they as a individual are unable or unwilling to take on such a risk they inturn should not get into the rental business. I would also like to clarify that my above comment is more so directed at large buildings and condominiums but alas I cannot pick and choose therefore to answer your question plainly, yes, that is the business or rental management.

I something wrong with me? I don't understand. If you cant afford to live somewhere, leave. I live to the west in Mississauga... Also, that's why people get roommates. I don't know, perhaps its me. I'm now considering moving further west to Burlington or to Georgetown. I dont blame anyone, the market is at fault. Simple economics, supply/demand.

That's be not fair at all. It should be illegal to increase rent so much. Shame on the city and the government . Nobody should have to leave. Imagine how many of us are going through this ? I thought it's be just me.

The solution is to live within your means. Allocate up to 35% of your after tax income to rent. If that means $1000 per month, find a roommate or live in a basement apartment.

Good idea. let's raise the rents higher that way no one can afford them. Please tell me you are not nieve enough to think the landlord or owner will eat the cost of the tax? They can and will tack the extra cost on to the renter.

She could, however addressing the issue would make more sense. I've turned down job opportunities in Vancouver due to cost of living, if things continue the way they are going Toronto may well find itself just as unaffordable.

Why not move to the suburbs? Mississauga, Milton, Brampton, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Ajax... quite a few reasonable renting options in these regions. Basements going for 600-900, condos for 1000-1600 depending on number of rooms.
