When I use my alcohol borax flux solution I dip the ring I'm working on directly into the bottle. Then I use my pick and put my water borax flux paste on the solder joint. We do things very similarly. Nice work!

Pro tip...... Turn your torch tip around so that the knobs are pointing towards the flame, then you can adjust the flame on the fly with one hand..

Hi Joel, thanks for your videos, for sharing your experience with us. Please tell me, when I change the size of the rings, in the place where the soldering was, pores form, which are very difficult to hide, can you give any advice on how to solder so that pores do not form in the place of soldering?

I have a question that seems to be ignored by most jewellers. I assume it is because they can not do it. Can you solder a ring ( in my case a 999 pure silver ) ring together without Solder paste or flux? I know it is possible, I have only seen one person do it and they used spit ( yes I know Spit) and they fused the two halfs together by only a flame torch. Thoughts>>>>
@JMDjewelry Жыл бұрын
That is welding and it can be done on pure metals but its easy to accidently melt parts. We do it with Platinum.
@AceBullion Жыл бұрын
@Joel McFadden I am practicing on various gauges of 999 wire. To see how hard it is to keep them together Strong, but also without any solder
@danpvdanpv Жыл бұрын
Yes you can fuse fine silver w/o solder, but you run the risk of melting the silver.
@AceBullion Жыл бұрын
@Dan I am practicing this . Not easy and would love a welder but will keep trying with a flame.

I've always wondered if my torch tip would melt if I cranked both knobs all the way, and what would happen if it did melt. It doesn't sound like a good thing to test out, really

I have never seen one melt. The thing to avoid is keeping it super hot for a long time. We even weld plat with this torch thats close to 3000 degrees F

Hello. Would this little tourch cut woven steel mesh 0.71 mm gauge wire. - i am looking to do intricate cuts so a large tourch is way to crude. Thanks for your time.
@JMDjewelry2 жыл бұрын
probably not hot enough. I would use a laser cutter or water cutter

I don't understund one thing: what is the porpuose of f boric acid and alcohol if you use flux ?
@JMDjewelry3 жыл бұрын
It keeps the rest of the ring from oxidizing. Or discoloring. You could coat the entire piece in Flux but the better flux is designed to clean not necessarily seal the item from Oxy.
@kevinsolove4583 жыл бұрын
Someone else answered a comment but I would rather you answer the question of "what is the ratio you use for your boric acid solution?"
@JMDjewelry3 жыл бұрын
It's not as important as you would think. But 50/50 is good. The alcohol is a medium to get the boric acid to flow evenly on the surface. Usually, I have to add some as it evaporates over time.
@minimyles82573 жыл бұрын
If you weren’t to use this mixture to prevent oxidation would polishing get rid of the oxidation?
@JMDjewelry3 жыл бұрын
Pickel and polish will get rid of it. However, that will take a lot more time. It will also soften a lot of the details.

What is the solder made of? Is it just a wire of whatever material the ring is made of? If i work with brass do i need a brass wire to solder? I am new to this and confused
@MrBercis9 ай бұрын
No, its alloy of the same material and others to lower the melting temperature, but keep the same color. Different solder for different materials and can be multiple melting temperature solders.

Great video but I have a question that how long can we keep on using that burner or torch?I mean can we keep on igniting it for hours or do we need to give it a rest?it is dangerous to keep it on ignition for hours because it could get too hot or can we use it for as long as we want?
@JMDjewelry3 жыл бұрын
I keep mine on just while I'm using it. Maybe 10 min at a time.

Its not salt its Boric Acid. There is no specific mix you just want a thin mix.
