I serve those that served me all the time, mostly older Veterans who can’t always help themselves and I all serve my country as a Volunteer, Rescue, EMT, & Firefighter for the state of Texas/ Northeastern. God Bless America!

Good to see a bit of cheer among service people. I served 22 years in British Army, seen some truly awful things, lost a couple of good mates (comrades), had some serious action in Iraq and Afghanistan, thankfully unharmed (but I don't know how). Anyone who serves their country, 100% hero, doesn't matter to me what they do when serving at least they have the balls to serve.

most of these soldiers are home from basic training, not deployments overseas. How I know? Their rank (pvt first class,pvt, air force NCO, navy ensign) and also the look of their age. All are very young (except the gentleman in the air force with NCO rank, whom, looks like he was deployed to overseas) and do not seem like they have been in a combat zone. I am not here to bash our soldiers (new and the old) as I have a lot of respect for them. I know the difference of coming home to family, friends and loved ones vs coming home from combat. These are all basic grads except the air force NCO. I was in the army, did basic in fort benning, GA.Did AIT at fort campbell and took part in the air assault program for the 101st airborne division. For most of the people I met in basic, most of the men DID NOT have family to go back to . They either did not have family or did not have good relations wit their family. I did not have a home coming party after basic. I just graduated and got sent to fort benning. I received a letter from my mom and that was it. This was in 2003. Aside from this small story, I am happy to see these folks graduating and I am sure they are enjoying their career in the military.

While these things are great, I always think about the student in the audience whose parent is not coming home, and wont be there for graduation. Like sitting in church and hearing someone testify to the goodness of God on how they avoided an accident, saying "God was looking out for me". All the time someone else is sitting there thinking about their God-loving daughter who died the year before in a car accident - "why was God not looking out for my daughter". Let graduation be graduation. Celebrate it for what it is. And not let it become a photo op for the self-absorbed, grief avoiding generation.

Others volunteer to serve so that you don't have to. If they didn't, there would have to be conscription! You could thank them for that much at least, if protecting the USA and our interests abroad in your estimation isn't enough to rate a thank you!
