During the Vietnam war, a girl is taken from her village by five American soldiers. Four of the soldiers rape her, but the fifth refuses. The young girl is killed. The fifth soldier is determined that justice will be done. The film is more about the realities of war, rather than this single event.

This is based on the true story of the Incident on Hill 192, in real life, the soldiers served very little time, with the longest incarceration only 3 years, yeah, for kidnapping, gang rape and murder. In the well known case of the My Lai massacre, the rape and slaughter of hundreds of women and children resulted in one guy serving three and a half years. Guess they didn't teach you that in history class.

The one who killed the poor girl later got into more trouble after being charged of being accessory after the fact in the murder of a black Navy sailor in 1992. He turned out to be a leader of a white supremacist movement, alongside the murderer himself. Ofc, he only served 1 year probation in exchange for his testimony. Jesus Christ.

My friend told another buddy who goes on patrol with the diddler. One day his squad reported he got “lost” and went missing on patrol and that was that.

The reason even South Vietnamese hated the US troops is because this happens way more often than US cares to admit. Do a google search and you'll find a "famous incident" that to date the US government refused to acknowledged even though many military personnel with knowledge of the incident bought it to light and repented for their sins. I came from a proud military family and always support the military, or should I say honor and integrity which the military should represent. Vietnam was a disgrace, and it's not because we lost the war.

At break times I ate pineapple with the Vietnamese girl actor 'Thuy'. All people were good fun to be around. I had some good photos taken with Sean Penn . Phuket 1988.

This is the one movie that I could not watch twice. The way that innocent girl was brutalized and killed is something I don't want to really think about. Knowing that it really happened is what makes it so disturbing. How war can turn ordinary people into evil monsters. But the propensity to do such things must already be there in them and war just allows them to act on them without being held to account except in this case because of one decent and moral soldier that reported what they did. Who knows what other atrocities took place that was never reported and just chucked up to war. Also that actress that played the part did it so convincingly as though it was real. I felt so sorry for her.

I knew a guy that fought in the war. He clarified everything that I suspected that went on during those days. Same thing was happening during WW2 and the last couple wars our country was involved in. He even mentioned the fact that you’ll never see another war film that depicted what some of our own military was doing to civilians. He was right. I worked at a movie theater for three years in the 1980's. I saw people almost running out of the auditorium showing this film. I saw the film and it was jarring. I started college a month later. Some students I was friendly with were triggered by the film...they looked at me like a criminal because I watched the film. I realized that they left, they never finished the film. They didn't want to hear anything else about the film. I had to raise my voice a little to let them know justice is served at the end of the film. Once I got that out, they calmed down. Some people just want to remain triggered and not know the truth.

This movie was based on the incident on Hill 192. Eriksson was based on Private Robert M. Storeby, one of the most courageous whistleblowers I've heard of. Couldn't find anything on Storeby online besides the incident itself, but I hope he's doing well.

There's historians who went through the de-classified records, and they found during the Vietnam war, US troops were involved in massacres & gang rape on a weekly basis. They operated with impunity since the troops were force conscripted, didn't want to be there, they felt their gov betrayed them and were angry at the Vietnamese for causing the reason they are forced to be there, so they took it out on the villagers. Commanders knew the resentment was rife, they knew soldiers would be disobedient if they were prevented to have their "fun", so they all turned a blind eye. Can you even imagine it, 11 years, massacres & rapes event every single week. And only one person was ever prosecuted (My Lai massacre which press covered), he got 3 & 1/2 years jail time then parole. For the murder of hundreds of innocent women & children!

Casualties of War was a true gem of a movie. Unfortunately, it came out around the same time as Platoon and Full Metal Jacket so it didn't get the same recognition as those two films. Plus, Michael J, Fox was not known for being a dramatic actor so a lot of people let the movie pass them by. If you are a fan of Vietnam War movies, you should definitely watch it.
