I listened to the studio version of this hundreds of times in 2015 (dixie and de blue tail fly too, to name a few others) while studying abroad my junior year of college. I'd usually listen to it while commuting on foot and by train to class. I was halfway across the world and encountering brand new things every day, and yet the lure of these traditional tunes proved too strong to resist... I've been a regular listener ever since. Thank you 2nd South Carolina String Band!

4:12 It's 25 cents for the morphine, it's 15 cents for the beer, it's 25 cents for the morphine, I'm gonna drink me away from here. Great line. I am my mama's darling boy; I am my mama's darling boy; I am my mama's darling boy play a little tune called "Soldier's Joy." There's a grasshopper sitting on the sweet potato vine; there's a grasshopper sitting on the sweet potato vine; there's a grasshopper sitting on the sweet potato vine along comes a chicken and says "He's mine!" We rock the cradle Julie, rock the cradle Julie, We rock that cradle Julie, and keep that baby warm. We rock the cradle Julie, rock the cradle Julie, We rock that cradle Julie, don't let that baby cry. I'm gonna get a drink don't you want to know, I'm gonna get a drink don't you want to know, I'm gonna get a drink don't you want to know, hold that soldier's joy. I'm sure that tune originated in England, its featured in the film Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy thats set in 1860s Dorset. Its a splendid rendition from the South Caroloina band, who are a pleasure to listen too. I wish they'd visit the UK.
