@@TheFrogfeeder not sure I agree with that totally. I think it was alot more against the grain back then. It seems years later there was alot of guilt, within Americans, as to how the returning vets were treated. Seems like people were trying to make up for that initially, however it does seem that sentiment is starting to shift back the other way. As a vet myself, I can't count the number of times someone has picked up the tab for lunch when we were out in uniform. Being retired now, not sure if that still occurs?

@@doop6769 Even when I was in school in mid 2000s, this was a statewide event we did every year in schools for Veteran's Day, we decorate cards then our parents send in money to buy a care package to attach to it and send to veteran hospitals and warzones (And they always had like a fund to pay for poorer kids, so no one was left out of it, like we did for field trips), I'm sure not every state does it, but our state must make like a million of these every year.

I’m seeing this in February 2020. I’ve heard too many stories from friends and family who went to Vietnam who felt like they wasted their time going to fight that war when they got home and were insulted, spit on, yelled at, boo’ed, and left to fend for themselves, upon returning to America. Whether people agreed with the war or not, these were our service men and women, many of whom were drafted (meaning they couldn’t refuse to go to war). Soldiers deserve honour, respect, and support for their service. Period. Only a few exceptions to that rule apply. God bless our troops! Every one of them have my undying gratitude. Salute! 🇺🇸

I remember being in the USAF in 1978, so a good four years after the war finally ended. Those in the service then rarely wore their uniforms off base as the clouds from the public were still very dark. The situation eventually corrected itself when people realized so many didn't have a choice. I don't know how old you are, but if you're over 40 take a good look at those only 18 & 19 years old. We and every military in history sent those youngsters to the front lines. (And even me. War over, safe Air Force, but I went in on my parents permission some months before my 18th birthday. It would tear me up to send my own son, now 20, away like that.)

@@ashleighnunez5532 What do you think about claims put forward by Vietnam Vets like Jerry Lembke who say that the image of the spit-on and degraded Vietnam Vet is a myth?
@kenjeknowsbest
@kenjeknowsbest 2 жыл бұрын
@@ashleighnunez5532 Thank you for answering. I'm asking because I read an interesting paper on the subject called "The Myth of the Troubled and Scorned Vietnam Veteran" by Eric T. Dean (available on jstor). The author claims that the image of the abandoned Vietvet has been amplified by political agendas on different ends of the spectrum, by media and by trauma. The Anti-war movement supposedly exploited this image to show how the war made veterans incapable of reintegrating into society and the Pro-war movement supposedly exploited the image to suggest that the antiwar-movement is to blame for the defeat (a back-stab myth so to speak) as well as the poor mental health of the returning veterans. The author also claims that it has become a sort of remembrance ritual for a national trauma where people and media repeat the claim unquestioned because most people do not dare contradict veterans claims. Historian Christian Appy writes in a review of aforementioned Jerry Lembcke's book "The Spitting Image": "My own view is that the spitting stories are largely mythic, but that the myth itself reflects the deep anger and animosity that many veterans harbored toward the antiwar movement. Their anger often reflected a sense of class injustice that gave their more privileged peers greater freedom to avoid the war. [...] I base my conclusions on extensive interviews I have conducted with Vietnam veterans since the early 1980s. Lembcke, however, gives no credence to the possibility that veterans themselves played a role in creating the myth of antiwar spitters, or that the myth teaches us anything meaningful about the class and wartime experiences of veterans. For him, the myth is almost entirely a product of Hollywood and right-wing politicians." (taken from his essay "The Muffling of Public Memory in Post-Vietnam" readable in the Chronicle of Higher Education). Thank you for sharing your story, I hope I do not come off as rude or dismissive of your family's or any other veterans experience, that is definetely not my intention. I think we both agree that it can not be overstated how important it is to treat veterans (and also civilians who witness war) with empathy, humility and humanity.

@@kenjeknowsbest I tell you Jerry Lembke is lying. I joined the US Navy 1n 1975 after the Viet Nam war. I was spit on and cussed out returning home after boot camp in uniform in Chicago O'Hara airport (the only clothing we owned) on leave before reporting to my next training base. I had several similar nasty experiences over the next several years as well - but not as nasty as the one after boot camp.

During the 1st Gulf War, my son was in 7th grade. Like many others, one of his classes wrote to soldiers. His soldier wrote back. Over the next few years, my son corresponded with his soldier (and his soldier's wife at holidays). My son is 42 now...and his soldier is long out of the Air Force. However, they still talk all the time. His soldier has been down to visit him several times...and will be back soon, if this virus settles down. People don't realize that these kids are important to some of the soldiers...and those soldiers are VERY important to the kids. I've thanked our soldier many times...and I still feel that it isn't enough.

What a perfect, beautiful story. I lost my hubby in 1994, who was also a soldier in VietNam...he wound up with cancer, caused by the Agent Orange defoliant used over there. He had cancer 3 times, the third time taking his life, at just 51!! He was such a beautiful and perfect husband and father to our adopted baby daughter...I think of him and our baby daughter, every single day, who is also an Angel in Heaven, with her Daddy...I still miss them both so much and I am so thankful for the gifts they gave me, by being the most important and precious loves in the world to me...Once upon a time...I was the richest person in the world. I grew up feeling so unloved for the most part and for them to have loved me so much was a bigger blessing than I can possible explain or I could ever dare say I deserved. Thank you God...I thank Him still every day for them both. Love the people in your life and love the people that mean something to you, in this lifetime...for all too soon, it will be gone. I love this story . I'm having a hard time ,seeing my keyboard through the tears of joy,while writing this . I try to tell a every soldier when I see them, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE . I was 10 years old in 1969 ,I don't remember seeing or hearing anything about the Vietnam , until much later in life . I have a ribbon shaped magnet that reads You Are Not Forgotten ,POW*MIA , on the back of my truck I display this with pride showing every soldier ,and there family's too ,that I care ,and I'm thinking about them every day ,also not just from the Vietnam war ,but all wars,every life is
