Learned this in my 8th grade science class. It stuck for 56 years. Your presentation was on a par with that class.

They thought this when I was in school. 7th or 8th grade can't quite recall but was still some 24 or 25 years ago. It's scary that some basic survival stuff is non existent these days.

Hey can I get a better understanding since I’m not that well with elevation on maps and I want to join the army so I would love having this skill to go with my other good parts with map

These maps are also supposed to show the direction of the slope, which will identify whether it's a hill/mountain or a ravine/valley or whatever. I think they are called "bergschtrichs" in German.

They do. The oblong shape is the military crest of the hilltop. All elevation lines are down slope from there. Each hilltop will have a connected elevation line.

Good stuff. You are on top of a hill if you look up and there is only sky. I was once on a land navigation course at what will soon be called Ft Johnson La. I was on a hilltop at the correct marker I was standing in 4 inches of water. There was a 20ft diameter depression on the hilltop.
