@@DefinitivelyNotCthulhu In my opinion this is not a good argument you can be prescribed drugs that are more dangerous than drugs on the street and you'll pass your drug test because you have a prescription for that particular drug. If you're being sloppy at work even if you're on a legal prescribed drug that's not acceptable, And so you should be dealt with But if you perform perfectly at work and even in your off time you do drugs it shouldn't matter Society doesn't see alcohol as a drug for some reason because of how ingrained it is but it's no different than saying why can't a soldier have a few beers when they're not on call and at work. As stated before you should be judged by your performance and you work that you do. Is not the chemicals in your urine. If you expand your logic then we should drug test for alcohol because we can't have people who drink alcohol handling weapons and heavy machinery. A normal response would be as long as they're not drunk while they're handling the weapons and machinery then it should not matter. Why doesent the same apply to weed or any drug for that matter It just doesn't make sense you can test positive for alcohol but as long as you're not drunk at work everything is fine. There’s harm done by false positive than ever has been saved by real positives

Yep. Eating poppyseed pretzels. Will never do that again. Failed the UA. Got in a lot of trouble, even though I didn't do anything.

I worked at a factory about a year ago. I had a drug test for getting officially hired instead of being hired by someone outside. I was working normally when I had 3 people from the office come down and tell me I had to leave until they got further data on the drug test. Almost a (paid leave) of a week, they called to tell me it was a false positive, only because I took some pain meds over the weekend....

There is always a questionnaire where you provide meds and supplements you take. They make sure the test is done correctly. Positives normally have two or three more tests to confirm the positive the test is then signed as positive and you can provide a hair follicle drug test which is more accurate. I ran the testing lab in San Diego “false positives” are very rare like one in 250,000 and the Navy does not conduct that many in a year normally 10% of active duty get tested in a year or just around 40,000 a week so statistically speaking 7 “false positives” out of 340,000 members in the Navy. Out of those 7 maybe one will get kicked out. The odds are extremely small.

There was also a huge issue with some otc medicines even as simple as Tylenol would flag for positives like weed or other hard drugs. Hard to prove if u ain’t got much money and don’t know what caused it

I know first hand on at least 3 occasions egg sandwiches on regular poppy seed rolls will pop lower quality multi-screen tests. Same goes for some cold meds, or especially legit Rx meds. It’s always an uphill battle trying to backpedal but inevitably looking guilty.

Over the counter drugs can in very weird situations lead to a low level false positive. Happened to one of my former subordinates many years ago. Urinalysis informed chain of command. (We never let the individual know) all subsequent drug test were spotless. To this day I don't think he even knows that he had a false positive.

Being a former Unit Prevention Leader and Drug Suppression Investigator with CID, a positive due to taking prescription medications is not a false positive. Positives are immediately squared up against the Soldier's medical records. Once the medical records show that the Soldier has been prescribed the medication the test shows a positive for, the test is normally listed as a negative. In the absence of a prescription for the substance found in the sample, only then is any action taken. It's definitely a lot easier now that medical records are kept electronically. Before that it used to be that you had to bring any medications with you to the Urinalysis and they were marked down on the list. The way urinalysis is done now, and the way samples are handled and tested are pretty much foolproof. If you come up positive, you've done something to cause it.

When I joined in the 80s, our NCO suggested we have our own drug test taken any time the military takes one. The delay in getting results back was so long that there was no way to prove that you were innocent if you popped a false positive.

from what i remember they took a sample from everyone in the barracks they tested 2 to 4 out of the box. If they failed the whole lot got tested. it is way more expensive to test everyone even for the government.

I gave 2 samples in one day because they claimed to have misplaced the original. It was later found and both were tested. The first was negative and the second was positive for THC. I was completely dirty and still won the appeal.

Oh bud first year of my rotc scholarship in the army and I took an adderall just to help with the sheer boredom. Pissed dirty and after witnessing all the bs this government has done with Covid and everything else and I couldn’t be happier. That one pill cost me a 150k scholarship and it was the best thing ive ever done.

Also heads up to anyone who has to take one of these test, make sure if you are using pre-work out that it doesn't come back positive for drugs! I have family in the military that say that some do so keep an eye on what you take!

If they know about your prescriptions, like they’re documented properly, they’ll know if it caused a false positive. I took the transit system to my reserve unit, people smoking outside the bus stop. My name got called that day for a UA, random names each month. Somehow had 0.03% on my UA for THC. Had to explain that one. My unit didn’t do the strips. They sent it to a lab on another post nearby. Still have that letter to this day (yes they notified me via mail).

You mean in the us military a positive test sample isn’t sent to an authorised ab for definitive analysis? In the Australian military a positive urine test is called a pending result. The sample is split into two parts and sent to two labs for spectrographic analysis. Also before testing ADF members have to declare all medications and supplements they take.

I've had a whopping 5 false positives and each time I was lucky enough to take a same day retest that came out negative. The culprit was diphenhydramine and dehydration

I was a UPL, and made sure that I had a huge list of everything that could cause a false positive, and I harped on it SUPER hard. Our unit only had people pop hot for coke and weed. Most of the time, those guys were trying to get out, and picked the dumbest way to do it.

Most of the time now they basically cut a ‘deal’ with folks to go ahead and leave the Army with a General Honorable Conditions discharge (all benefits retained minus GI Bill). As far as I know, the only option other than taking this deal is to, yes, get a lawyer, take it to Court Martial….at that point, if you cannot prove your innocence, you are now found guilty in a Court Martial situation, and depending on what all they say and can get to ‘stick’, you’ll be charged with. “Oh, you didn’t leave the barracks that weekend? Must’ve possessed the substance in a federal building.” (felony - Leavenworth) And even if that doesn’t happen, being found guilty in Court Martial, I do believe, now keeps you from getting that General Honorable discharge. So, then you’d be looking at OTH, Bad Conduct, or Dishonorable. I’d be behind anyone looking to fight the system…. may God be with you.

Aviation Navy guy here. For prescription meds, there is a spot on the drug screening sign sheet where you can put SMR for see medical record. For the supplements? Good luck but try to look up the "black list" for one's that definitely put you in a false positive.
