A signals corporal from the 6th Armoured Div, South Africa, in WW2 told how even a single telephone wire would stop a tank back then. Certain tank units would get out and lift the wire over the tanks, others would just not care, and often paid the price by getting tangled up.

@stephen Martinez true, try get that wire untangled from your rollers and sprockets, or try to gun the engine to overcome the problem and overheat your engine. The Signals coporal had no reason to lie. It was, I believe, an isolated incident. The South African tankers often lifted the wire, so saving the signalers a lot of trouble tracking down the break. Having said that, I can see that the fouled tank track story might have been fabricated to convince other units to not break the telephone wire. I will try to find corroboration for this event. Thanks for making me think about it from your perspective.

I learned something about laying razor/concertina wire. OK, It spirals out evenly, you leave the first circle alone, maybe more, then you twist the next segment so it turns the opposite direction. I was very familiar with this with old land lines, telephones attached to the telephone circuit, not wireless. I can't explain how you get it going in the other direction, but I could do it without a problem, the third section stays uniform, the 4th section is twisted reverse, like that, keep going. I bet there is an explanation on the internet.

I get what you're saying, it's like the convolutions you go thru to neatly coil a long-ass cord, but in reverse
@tomcondon6169
@tomcondon6169 Жыл бұрын
@@punchkitten874 Cords are secured by carpenters* with what is similar to a knitting running knot. The concertina can be compared to a classic home phone cord, (you may be unfamiliar), the wire has a normal coil. Let's say we are on one end. It coils from the distance toward us, coiling clockwise, (or counter-clockwise). Imagine about 2 revolutions go normal, then it is twisted, and about 2 revolutions begin to go counter-clockwise. BUT, once that terminates, the rest of the coil is still clockwise. With the old phones, you would have one or two parts of the cord that gets twisted, and reverses it's turn. BUT, the concertina, done deliberately, taken 2 turns or so, (I didn't sit down and figure if reversing the spin takes 1, 1½, 2, or otherwise spins to reverse). You can laboriously work it and make the whole coil reverse from clockwise to counter-clockwise). SO, assuming it takes 2 full coils to reverse, you would go two coils to 4 coils, reverse that portion, then skip 2 coils to 4 coils, reverse that, and on. It is constantly reversed. Once reversed, they use clips, or tie wire to secure it. *I'm a journeyman carpenter and a journeyman high voltage electrical lineman. We lineman don't coil power cords like carpenters do, but coil them in good size coils to avoid what we call an, "asshole," in the rope. A carpenters cord will have all kinds of twists and bends, but they don't mind. Linemen are trained to keep coils flat.

Speaking of bringing vehicles to a stop. Mid 2000's Iraq, an E-7, an E-6, and an E-5 in a 5-ton truck take some items to a burn pit. Adjacent to the pit is a pile of mattresses. It is raining so the muddy tire tracks leading through the pile are obvious. Under the truck the moving parts have pierced the mattress covers and snagged the springs. The NCO Mafia got stuck and called recovery. The recovery NCO looked at the situation and handed them a bolt cutter off the wrecker; "I recommend wearing eye pro." Stay safe!

@Damocles54 Жыл бұрын
@TBreezy when you shake out a roll of 'tina it has 2 strands that run as opposite coils. So as you go along you'll see everywhere the coils cross each other it forms an X. If a single roll of it is between where you are and where you want to be, and you don't want to go around it, put your foot on one of the Xs and push down with your foot. It will collapse and pop right back into shape once you're across it. This is only really of use when it's a single roll, usually across an access point where you don't have a gate. If it's a stacked concertina obstacle, this clearly won't work. But with a single roll, it's quite handy

Grandpa told me a story about a forward position in Vietnam getting a shipment of 'combat wire'. It was the early days of razor wire, but not as easy to deploy as barbed wire. Lieutenant decided to just chuck it out of the way instead of wasting manpower installing it. 2 days later they get a report about a wet behind the ears Captain that lead his platoon into said chucked wire. I thought this was strange but grandpa said the wire was in an air drop shipment. It is palletized 45 rolls of wire so when the soldiers shoved it off an embankment out of the way it broke apart. Basically becoming barbed wire slinkies all over that position. That Captain came unglued over the radio.

Not that I’m going for absolute accuracy when it comes to my builds but even if I can be a little bit more precise then it’ll make me feel better at the end of my project, especially if other people notice but even if they don’t I can still point it out and make myself seem more intelligent lol JK man I’ll give credit where credit is due 🤙

Barb wire is designed to create a parameter for cattle and other hardy livestock. It is also a generic classification of all types of wire with any shaped barbs. Razor wire is a type of barbed wire designed to create a parameter for humans. Concertina wire is a type of barbed wire designed to be deployed in hoops to ensnare, entangle, and slow things moving through it. In order for Concertina wire to be deployed it must be coiled around or affixed to some sort of parameter (such as a form of barbed wire), otherwise it will not be able ensnare and be easily moved out of the way.

Called about 4 vets til we found one that was open and they said it was a good thing we didnt wait til the next day cause it was really deep. She's fine now and there was no lasting damage. My dad and I were FURIOUS. We lived on a military base and were on a hiking trail that is open to the public. Dad and I went out and spent christmas night clearing it all out. 2 pickup trucks full of it some lazy soldier left out after training instead of picking it all up and it washed down a stream right next to a trail. Called the garrison commander's office to ask where to dispose the junk his soldiers had left behind and his office was pissed we had cleaned it up without alerting the MPs and wanted us to take it off base and dump it somewhere else. We left it on the yard until they came and got it after the whole neighborhood started a storm. Dad and I would go on the trail and collect it and the base gave us instructions to take it to a specific place where soldiers would take it to dispose it. Cleared out a whole lot of the junk.

I've done my fair share of exploring abandoned properties, and weirdly enough I've seen a lot of dull razor wire? It looks just like the razor wire in the video, but it only has the points. The edges are completely blunt.

I got stabbed in the leg by razor wire the first day of a month long AT. Four years later, I still have the scar. Ps I still sleep in my PT shorts.

Concertina wire doesn't cause grievous injury like razor wire does... but it will definitely tangle someone up, making them vulnerable to either getting shot or captured.

I remember making Bangalore torpedoes with pickets and c4 to blow wads of concertina into sections that we could pick up with a bucket loader. That shit is a pain in the ass

I got a nice scar up my forearm from C-wire that almost stopped me from getting back in. Doctor asked what it was and I had to explain razor sharp leaves on wire that moves like a giant slinky and cannot be wrangled.
