Great detail in your video! Very informative. My 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee will occasionally not start unless I shift into neutral, and even then will sometimes not start. When that happens, I have to occasionally shift into neutral to get it rolling very slowly, then quickly move the shifter from Neutral to Park. The vehicle stops rolling abruptly, but I will usually start when turning the key. I know that it's not good for the transmission, but sometimes I have no other option. I was going to replace the neutral safety switch and that is when I learned that my Jeep's transmission doesn't have an externally accessible neutral safety switch, but some sort of solenoid in the transmission that is not allowing the engine to start. Is the part you are replacing in this video the same part that will resolve my "solenoid module neutral safety switch" issue; or are my Jeep WJ problems unrelated to your Jeep issues? I'm trying to find the part number that I need to order to fix the problem.

That I don't know. You'll need to pull the codes and do more research on troubleshooting. I can't find anything on a standalone torque converter solenoid on the 45RFE or 545RFE transmissions. That might mean this solenoid pack includes the TCC solenoid.

@jalandub7 жыл бұрын
Make sure the plug going into the Trans is completely off, that could get it stuck. I don't see how it could get stuck on the shifter, maybe try it in a different position, neutral or reverse? Just remember which position its in so you can have the selector plate in the right spot when you reinstall. And double check your bolts.

When I would first drive away the transmission would go into limp mode (which I've now forgotten if thats 3rd or 2nd gear) and wouldn't shift past that. Once I got down the road a mile or so I could restart my car and it would shift fine. So I was able to drive for a while and get my research done before replacing it. I'm pretty sure it was my OD pressure switch on the solenoid pack that was stuck. It has a large magnet on it and was all gunked up.

Also while you are waiting, depress the brake pedal and turn ignition switch to start then back to off. This will take out any residual voltage left in the computer. Jeff...I know the video is a year old...I'm hoping you get this question. My 2006 Commander seems to be in limp mode. I took apart the TCM and used electrical contact cleaner as a 1st step. Didn't solve it. My thoughts are the TCM is shot or the Solenoid pack needs to be replaced. How did you pinpoint the problem when you had it?
@jalandub9 жыл бұрын
I remember researching and being told it could be the TCM. I recently had a bank 1 sensor problem and the dealership told me it's almost always the TCM or PCM. Another mec told me it almost never is (turns out it wasn't, just a sensor issue). It seems like a rare thing for problems to be related to the TCM. Based off of other forums describing the same symptoms as my Jeep and the solenoid replacement fixing it, I went with that before attempting to mess with my TCM and it worked.
@jjboods9 жыл бұрын
Jeff Weeks For my Commander, the TCM is extremely simple. Between the drive to the store to get the cleaner, taking out the TCM, cleaning the contacts, and putting it back together...about an hour. The problem for me...it is the easier part to try to fix the problem, but the, more expensive. The solenoid is less expensive, but more complicated. If I get the error code, will that pinpoint one issue vs the other?
@jalandub9 жыл бұрын
Very true, less expensive, bigger pain to fix. When I got the codes one was OD PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN which is a fault in the solenoid pack itself. You should be able to retrieve the main codes yourself by turning your ignition on and off 3 times (that method works for my Jeep anyway)

Here is a list of the cars with the 45RFE/55RFE 1999-2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (4.7L) 2002-early 2003 Jeep Liberty (3.7L) 2000-2002 Dodge Dakota (4.7L) 2000-2002 Dodge Durango (4.7L) 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 (3.7L and 4.7L) 545RFE 2001-2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (4.7L, 4.7L H.O., 5.7L Hemi) 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty (Diesel applications) 2003-2011 Dodge Ram (3.7L, 4.7L, 5.7L Hemi) 2005-2011 Dodge Power Wagon 2003-2011 Dodge Dakota (4.7L, 4.7L H.O.) 2003-2011 Dodge Durango (4.7L, 5.7L) 2006-2010 Jeep Commander (4.7L, 5.7L Hemi) 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler (2.8 L CRD) 2007-present LTI/London Taxi Company TX4 Thanks again, I'm sure you have saved people countless dollars

What were the Symptoms you were experiencing when it went into "Limp" mode?
@jalandub10 жыл бұрын
After starting the car and putting it into drive it would accelerate partially through first gear and then go into "limp mode" which is 3rd gear all the time, leading to slow acceleration and higher RPMs at road speeds. After getting down the road a little ways and when the transmission was warmer I could turn my car off and then back on and it would not go into limp mode. So my symptoms were not very severe but characteristic of the code it was throwing.

Jeff Weeks Have an 01 Durango, with 45RFE transmission limp mode seems to be 1st & 2nd, but no 3rd & 4th. Your video and info have helped me to find the problem, there is so little info out there for these transmissions.
@evilplman276010 жыл бұрын
Jeff Weeks Your video is helpful. What sucks is the price of that Damn Solenoid pack is more than it costs to actually rebuild the rest of the Transmission,

Did you have to reflash your computer "pcm" and did it have to re-learn itself with the new solenoid pack?
@CHAOSMOVEMENT4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need to do this soon. Just turned on my vehicle and shifted to drive and it was stuck in 3rd gear. It also doesn't shift down at lower speeds unless you hit the gas significantly and there's some slop between gears.
@jalandub11 жыл бұрын
No it didn't require any PCM work. I read in a forum about someone's trans shifting a little hard for the first drive but then it relearned on its own. Mine drove great after the repair.

Thanks for this, I just called my local shop for an estimate and waiting to hear back on it. If it's insanely priced I'll be doing a DIY on it as well.

After replacing the solenoid pack on my 2000 Grand Cherokee, the Jeep has power - lights, gauges and accessories - but will not crank. Anyone else experience this issue ? The installation went very smoothly so I was surprised with the result.

so this fixed the p0700 code? all I need to do is replace the solenoid pack?
@jalandub8 жыл бұрын
Denny Digital if your vehicle is going into limp mode, then works normally after running it for a few minutes and restarting, it's probably your solenoid pack.
@Bennuides8 жыл бұрын
Jeff Weeks I have P0700 and p0116 plus I need a new motor mounts so far I have seen all you gentlemen on KZbin do the same thing to fix the issue so now it's my turn! thanks Jeff! God bless!
@trryhin8 жыл бұрын
All the P0700 code is the engine control module telling you there is a code in the transmission control module. It could be something as simple as a $30 speed sensor. Mine has a P0740 code in the TCM for an open LR solenoid. Going to replace the solenoid pack tomorrow. Thanks for the video!
@jalandub8 жыл бұрын
You're right about the P0700 being a pretty general code. For me having that code with the P1781 and the limp mode symptom was what led me to the solenoid pack. Is your P0740 on a 99-2000 JGC? Doesn't that have to do with the torque converter clutch circuit? Is that part of the solenoid pack?
@trryhin8 жыл бұрын
Mine is on an 05 Ram 1500 with a 545rfe transmission. The code is for the torque converter lockup solenoid (the torque converter is not locking when it should). Going to replace the solenoid pack, and if that doesn't fix it it's probably the torque converter going bad.
