Nice to see a piece on tacking gents. I was once learning how to tack with the spinnaker up. The next thing I knew, I was trying to untangle myself from underneath the yacht so that I could breathe again. We’d turned turtle halfway between Lee-on-Solent and the IOW. A master yachtsman had to drag us to deeper water to upright the yacht. I can’t remember who my teacher was-funnily enough some chap from Chineham, who might even have been called Dave! It was such a long time again, and I never went sailing again!!! Your expertise on the art of tacking is reassuring, especially with Mr Oliver laughing at the helm 😂. Love it as always.

The Old Farmhouse pub you found online is in Totton. Totton is the other side of Southampton (at the top of Southampton Water near Eling Tide Mill), so you were right that it was open. The one you found in Bitterne looks very similar to the Totton pub from the outside, but is now closed. Eling Tide Mill is worth a visit but check the tides. I've only kayaked up there but know it dries out.

Top tip for the helm. Don't just put the wheel over, give the crew a chance to get the sheet in by holding her for a second once just through the wind. Far easier to sheet in by hand a then trim by letting a bit out than having to grind 'em in. Next time could we have a lesson on tacking through 180 by means of having too much sail up! Good laugh, keep 'em coming.
@LeeShoresLazyJacksandLunches2 жыл бұрын

Enjoyed this episode whilst relaxing in the bath with a cup of tea. On hearing the word masterclass I tuned in and focused on the screen... At that very moment my wife appeared wanting to use the bathroom facilities with my 7 year old in tow asking me to fix his lego train.. Whilst dealing with all of the above I missed the first tack, but noticed it had gone wrong when I spotted the tender overtaking you 😂 Safe to say I went back over the master class a few times, making notes for my little Potter out later today. 😂😂😂

Can I ask why there aren’t any winch handles in your winches?! Caught in irons sounds like a battle plan to help you leave the trailer tent up whilst trying to tack upwind. Can I suggest that with the marquee left up that you sail more downwind than upwind? You might be fighting the wind somewhat less this way. Anyhow, a fascinating insight into your endeavours, we watched it while doing some electronic maintenance onboard.

Oh dear chaps. Should have gone to Shamrock Quay perhaps but not free. A trip up to Marchwood Yacht club might be a good one for you guys but it is also very tidal. That was my sort of weather out there, grey and miserable. I have to concur with DO that victualling on your vessel is sadly lacking DR. I too keep Fray Bentos and plenty of nibbles onboard at all times just in case my crew oversleep and don’t get breakfast. 😂. It looked like you were walking in the seedier part of Southampton, is Derby Road still going strong? BTW the angle of your genoa sheet to the winch is pretty sharp but nice tacking looks the same despite the poor harming technique. Need to pick your destinations better me thinks. Thanks. Andy UK
