Real craftsmanship. I used to 'play' with cement and ornaments in Italy but not at this level.

It's great that the masons and other craftsmen were given credit for their work. So many great projects like these credit is given to the Architect, and the General contractor. The true artisans, are simply forgotten.
@dougpeery68884 жыл бұрын
@tanon if it doesn't matter, then why does the Architect, and General contractor need their names on a big plaque?
@dougpeery68884 жыл бұрын
@tanon I was in old faithful a while back, the fireplace in the lodge has stones that are huge! Like 3'x4'. Up 15 ft above the floor. I would have loved to see a plaque that said who the masons were that built it 100 years ago in Yellowstone with no forklifts, or power. Now it's just a bunch of forgotten masters that no one will ever know about.

@tanon I am a master mason for 47 years. I have probably built an entire city in my career. I also do historical restoration, and have been involved in several high profile masonry restoration projects. Not only do I appreciate the work of an artisan, I like to know a little about the craftsman himself. A name on a plaque is no different than a painter signing a painting. Research can be done from that name, and a genealogical record could be done. That interests me, I like to read what's on a plaque, I don't give a shit about your opinion. So, roll that into a ball and shove it up your ass.

These are men of a skilled craft preforming works that will be looked upon for decades by the eye countless observers. Herald to the artisan who works in the cold of the morning, heat of the afternoon sun and rain to you the highest tribute is paid, longevity.

It's even better. Respect. I'm trying to get such moldings on my house windows. But craftsmanship hard to find. Still dreaming of that old European look.

Beautiful detailing and craftsmanship I have a vintage plastering book that shows tradesman creating phony marble columns using colored plasters and silk webbing to imitate grain then polishing it to shine like marble. It was considered part of the craft at the time. So what happened to the finial in original picture? Did that decide to omit it or add later?

wonderful to see how they did it...I think the original one however was larger in diameter...the proportion relative to the railings is a bit different...but amazing!!

Trev Cessna172 Very true, great observation! However because the size structure it had to be enjeneered to a certain size for the supports, they would not allow us to build any bigger! A bit of a shame relly as I said it should be bigger, they just wouldn't budge.

Hi Simon! I am crazy about your beautiful work. I am a sculptor and very good with my hands for shaping fine detail. I am building a house soon and would like to create similar wonderful details as your letter box. Is there a short course you can suggest for someone that wants to learn about the tools, mixtures, and techniques just to be able to make some basic beautiful details for personal projects? Where did you study? I am in Israel, but can travel. Thanks, Menashe

That would be awesome, or shall I say, "Au" some. I am originally from Canada but made Aliya 13 years ago. I studied architecture but never worked in it, my heart was always more in craftsmanship. Unfortunately, here in Israel the idea is almost unheard of - very low building standards with very unskilled workers. I would love to start a revolution, even if it is just in my own little corner. Could you use an apprentice? I would love to come for a few weeks and try to learn as much as possible from you.
