Im currently restoring an old mansion here in Argentina . There is allot of brickwork and ointing im doing , but there are miles of running cornices , outdoor and indoor . You video was verry motivating and inspiring . I had no idea how I was going to repair the cornices till i saw your video ! . Thank You ! . Please post more videos , they are great !

Simon, nice work and beautiful finished letterbox. Nice to see the traditional methods in vivo. Some of us know what you mean when you say you did it in your 'spare time'. Built my own years ago, and it took 12mths in my 'spare time'. However, did mine in stone. Bruce

Nice work Simon. You may have answered this already but for those moulds are you using a corse sand cement and lime mix? What do you use for the splash on, it looks finer paste.

9 coarse wash sand, 1 cement 2 lime. 3 fine wash sand, 1 cement, 1 lime.

What did you apply as final coat, the "almost" yellow coat ?

I used off white cement with a small amount of yellow oxide and used this as a sand finish all over.

How do you smooth all the surface to that final yellow coat?

I put yellow oxide in the final coat of sand finish, with an off white cement, and skim coated this to the entire letterbox.

Mortar render is plaster. It can use sand, cement, lime and gypsum for internal plastering.
