In this video I directly compare the Solid State Logic Fusion hardware to the plugins. The results surprised me. SSL haven't officially released an all in one plugin emulation of the SSL Fusion but they have released it in parts.

Plugin sounds flatter, hardware sound fuller and more separation. That’s the extra 10% magic. Hybrid is the way to go

Mix in the box, master out the box. It's a winning combination. Instant recall till you are 100% happy with the production and mix. The give the mix that 10% in the master.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio another approach is to mix in the box and process the mix bus with hardware which is what I do. But plugins are great and necessary and they compliment hardware big time.

@@AndyKingCo yes. I get asked a lot which is better. Plugin or hardware and I never say one is better. Hardware technically sounds better but the plugin even if it's 90% there is still excellent and highly beneficial using.

I agree, though it's flatter, that can certainly be adjusted with an insert of another plugin, for me preferably the Pultec EQP1A for a bit more depth. Still, not going to spend the the £1.4-£1.7k the fusion goes for these days.

​@@AndyKingCoYES! I recently bought a g compressor and ssl fusion, Got it on my master and then i mix the individual tracks with plugins, I belive this is the way to go. The music sounds more full and airy, while plugins on master seems to flatten the mix

Definitely a major difference with the vocals. The vocals sound so mucj better with the Analoge Fusion.

low end sounds a little nicer on the hardware. I own these plugins but will get the hardware too

Hmm interesting. I will get the Fusion hardware next week so pretty happy. Maybe its better to compare the plugins also run through the same signal path, cabling and AD/DA conversion to get an even closer comparison. I demoed the Fusion hardware and plugins but for me the HW is way way better as its more musical and pleasant to listen to as plugins simply do sound digital and too perfect. I love analogue imperfections. Cheers and nice vid!

The hardware is warmer and seems to allow transients to naturally decay instead of hitting a wall. I bet you could get a similar result with the plugin paired with something like Nuetron 3. Great video!

I would agree. The same sound could be achieve with some additional processing. The great thing about hardware is we instantly get to the desired results straight away. When you have a reference point it's also easier to achieve the referenced sound using plugins. With that reference you use the plugin think that is the achievable sound.

Close but the hardware is a bit more 3d and dynamic, the sound seems to bloom forward a bit more. The analog harmonics are slightly better in the drive too.

I am always curious with test like this about the signal path and the impact. Were both exported real-time and was any distortion introduced on the analog path as I think that what the "sweetness" is for sure!

Both hardware and software pass through an identical chain. Both hit the converters. This important as the conversion adds to the sound and would be an unfair test otherwise.

That would actually be a good shout. A 500 series imager as a stereo unit would be cool. The SPL big wad a success so no reason the imager wouldn't be.

The transformer Plug in is nice. I got the Hardware. Cause I don’t like that narrow and flatter sound of the plugins compared to the hardware. I can hear the difference on my iPhone in 2seconds. I love analog stuff and in a hybrid studio, I love plugins too. Best of booth worlds
