Can you Bypass the mic pre amplifiers in the SSL board if you want to use other mic pre amplifiers?
@MixingMusicAnalog
@MixingMusicAnalog 2 жыл бұрын
you can just use the "monitor in" on the SSL and not the "channel in". That bypasses the pre.

This is a mixging-solo set up if I remember correctly, right? I wonder how would the routing be if you want to use your analogue mixing console for both tracking and mixing with a hybrid set up. Would that require more patch-bays and at least another Apollo? (plus more D-sub cables!!!)
@MixingMusicAnalog
@MixingMusicAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, another Apollo and at least 1 more patch-bay
@simonetolomelli
@simonetolomelli 3 жыл бұрын
@@MixingMusicAnalog ok. So the routing would be from the live room directly to the SSL Origin and from there to the apollo? Or would you connect the live room to the third Apollo and from there the current flow? I don’t get how the mixing desk can manage both the outputs from the live room and those from the Apollos. I think I’m missing a bit somewhere.
@foresthillstudio
@foresthillstudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@simonetolomelli The Origin is an IN LINE console... So think of it this way... EACH INDIVIDUAL CHANNEL ACTUALLY HAS TWO SIGNAL PATHS...The Long Faders on each channel take the output from your recording device (tape machine or DAW) and bring them to the Console, that's where you do the mixing and send it out to the Master Bus... ALSO each of the channels has a line and mic input (in your case these would be your live room feeds) that go to the Short Faders on each channel... That's where you are getting inputs for tracking and these have Channel Direct Outs (in your case these would be feeding your Apollo) that come from the Short Fader path... These Short Fader signals are the INPUTS to your recording device (tape machine or DAW) ... There are a ton of other things that can be done on each channel and the Long and Short Faders are all routable to other places, but the description above is the basis for how an IN LINE console like the ORIGIN works.
@DavidSJ_DAP
@DavidSJ_DAP 3 жыл бұрын
@@simonetolomelli The mics would run into the SSL through the XLR connections on the 32 channels OR through the LongFader inputs via D-Sub from a patch bay and enter through the preamps...after that the audio is split between the direct outs to the X16s for printing each track via D-Sub, and the 8 stereo groups at the same time...for monitoring the audio would come back into the board FROM the X16 to the ShortFader inputs and enter through the monitor inputs via D-Sub...so the long faders on the board control the audio mix to the stereo groups and master out, the short faders control the audio to the cue sends for headphone monitoring... That uses all of 2 X16s...the third X16 is needed for the sub-groups for stem recording...a fourth interface is needed for printing the master track... The individual channel inserts, the sub group inserts and the master inserts would all need to be routed through patchbays as we have and back to the board... So...audio in from the studio to the board, out to 2 X16s for track recording, back from the X16s for cue/monitors, out the 8 stereo sub groups to the THIRD X16 for stem printing...and the MASTER out to a FOURTH interface (does NOT need to be an X16) for stereo master mix recording... Hope that helps, but it will be easier to show on the board itself...stay tuned for Origin 101...

To fully connect ALL Origin in's and outs according to the SSL Manual You will need approximately (72) D-Sub to D-Sub cables and (6) 96 point patch Bays... That is how I organized and did MY install

Really like watching your videos but if I may make one suggestion you and all of those like you who are gear lovers do yourself a disservice by not using reel-to-reel tape. you should at least be mixing down to reel-to-reel tape. you are in possession of gear that cost thousands of dollars and yet you are going to mix down to an inferior subpar audio platform. do yourself a favor and invest in a good reel-to-reel mixdown deck

Ok so I can do this without the mixer and just have it going from.interface to patch bay and out board gear to taste and back in., Yeah I can't afford to spend that kind of dough. It's a hell of system.

I think you can hear the difference, but I .worried that if I use a Presonus mixer that I will clip because uad is a louder interface. So I also feel like what the hell is the point

Hi Dave, well done amd thank you for making this series of videos to hep us out. The back of the Origin were the DB25 connectors are located does not appear to have any lables by SSL which I presumed is marked on the manual. Good thing you have done the lablelling to make your life easier for this process. Can I kindly ask you what was the main monitor outs called on the SSL manual were you connected all of you monitors (The Sub the Focals, etc)? I am currently wiring up my home studio based around the SSL Matrix 2 console but i found out while testing the connection to what i thought was the monitor connection should be is labled as "Rec, Mix, Follow Mon Out" but that connection dors not give me control of the main volume using the big blue volune pot on the console. I must have connected sometging wrong but i was wondering if speaker outs on the Origin are labelled the same. What is the main outs lablled as? Connecting the Master section of this console, I found the lablling in the manual a bit confusing so it must be me. Thank you once again for doing this awesome series.

on the Origin the main speaker outs are called "Monitor Outs". You should refer to your desk's manual as I am sure its not the same as the Origin. You can also contact SSL support. They were very responsive and helpful to me.

Guys, thank you for this great video. I'm thinking of getting an Origin but long story short i can't wrap my head around how to use it in a mixing situation (for tracking it's pretty obvious). We have a bunch of outboard (comps, pres, EFX, etc.), even have a Sigma we could use for automation on the desk, but the only way i can think of using it for mixdown, is DAW to individual channels, but the desk's EQ would have to be POST compressors and ITB fader moves, unless you literally insert the console's EQs + analog comps *into* Pro Tools for further ITB processing, fader moves and then back out to the buses on the console. That would work but It seems a shame not to use the sends on the desk itself - but if you do, whatever fader moves you make ITB would affect whatever analog comps you have on the desk! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I hope this made sense. Thanks again for taking the time to post your videos!

I dont use the faders in the box at all. They are all set to "zero" and each track is routed out to the channels on the Origin. All the EQ and compression is done with the console and hardware, then its routed back in on a stereo print track in the DAW. I use almost no plugins these days. Yes, the automation moves inside your DAW would then be "pre" EQ and compression which is not the most ideal but I do it all the time and it works. If that was a big problem, you could always print your tracks after EQ and compression back into your DAW, then do your automation in the box but that takes a lot more work. Personally, I ride most of the automation in real time LIVE as the stereo track is printing into my DAW. Sure that automation isnt recallable, but I have never once had a client say " the mix is really good but that automation needs to be fixed". Not a single time ever. If all of this is too much in your situation, then you need a console with automation built in. That console will start around 100K and go up from there. There is no desk with 24-32 faders that has automation for less than that.

@@MixingMusicAnalog Thank you for your quick reply sir. I may just do a 'dry run', printing fader moves and see how that works. :) Definitely old school, except that now it would easy to repeat a move if you made a mistake. In the old days you had to do manual moves, splice and paste the tape in the different sections of the tune. Now it's just be a matter re-recording that section. Had never even thought of it but it's worth a try. Thanks!
