Nice! Thanks, I am going to take the senior course next semester and this is going to help me out a lot! We are even using the same book!

Oh come on man you guys are starting with the shodinger wave equations, I think I have some more homework to be done. Need to ramp up quickly to this state. Any suggestions ?

I have one question. The graphs for bonding and anti-bonding E vs r, how did that graph come about? What equation is it based on?

At 3:25, I don't understand where the Bra(phiB) H Ket(phiB) term goes, do we say that it is zero? What approximations are being made here? KZbin doesn't allow bra-ket notation, its to html-ish.

David, concerning your first question about Bra(phiB) H Ket(phiB), we invoke that Bra(phiB) H Ket(phiB) = Bra(phiA) H Ket(phiA) (aka that the isolated atoms have the same energy since they're the same flavor). For the second question, is the Hamiltonian Hermitian? In other words, what is the relationship between Hermitian operators and observable eigenvalues?

All hermitian operators have real eigenvalues

Hi any suggestions for a solid state physics book that is up to date and can explain solid state physics to someone who knows nothing about it?
@erictoberer48747 жыл бұрын
Simon's book is the best intro book I'm aware of; always looking for other suggestions, however.

I can recommend "Solid State Physics: An Introduction" from Philip Hofmann. But of course you will need some knowlege about calculus, differential equations or the braket notation. However this Book is a bit complicater and deeper than this series, but still easier to read than for example the SSP Book from Kittel.

I thought when you combine two wavefunctions together you take the tensor product, why are they adding the two wavefunctions of the electrons

Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals method, making use of the Variational principle in QM

@@tylerjackson6956 Is there an argument for which one would be more accurate?
@tylerjackson69565 жыл бұрын
@@David-xq3bg From Variational Principle, the LCAO method guarantees an lower boundary on the ground state energy depending on the accuracy of your trial wave function. It is widely practiced to use this method for approximating atomic orbitals of molecules and in other aspects of quantum chemistry.

Also, do we have reason to think that the elements of the Hamiltonian are real in this basis, so that Bra(phiB) H Ket(phiA) = Bra(phiA) H Ket(phiB)?
@kontiimanalatit898710 ай бұрын
Hamiltonian is a hermitian operator (H=H* and transposed) (all operators that yield observable quantities are hermitian) have real eigenvalues
