I don't get how you distinguished between primitive and conventional lattice! you talked about the primitive lattice to be any shape then jumped to say that centered rectangular is not primitive.. I'm lost

The primitive lattice contain only one site (1 atom per unit cell in case of a crystal of a single element). The conventional lattice contains more than one site. The problem with most primitive unit cell choices is that they sometimes don't reflect the symmetry of the crystal structure. That's why we resort to conventional lattices to fully describe the symmetry of the crystal.
