Behringer: Organic, heritage tomato Arturia: Supermarket tomato.

Behringer sounds much better to my ears. It's more in your face. The Arturia V sounds like it's in the next room in comparison.

thanks for this. they're quite close! I think the patch on the arturia at 0:30 has a lot less bass than the one it is being compared to; the others are more closely matched. I prefer the more raw sound of the hardware...it has more harmonics...what preamp and how much gain did you give it? They are quite close, though!! Not much between them in a mix, but massive kudos to Behringer for doing a really good job with their solina, just as they did with their VP-330 clone.

Thanks for your comment. I tried to match as best as I could but sometimes the Arturia sounded a bit weird...

You don't have to use the built-in phaser though. There's a free, excellent sounding phaser that is based on the orange coloured guitar pedal, MXR Phase 90.

I cannot believe someone wrote they are quite close. The analog Behringer Solina sounds much better. It obviously sounds more organic. It sounds more controlled. There’s a lot more brilliance to the sound. Behringer’s phaser is also so way way better. You could work with the Arturia’s VST Solina for demo’s, but now that we can have a “real” Solina from Behringer dead cheap that sounds so much better and so much more like an original Solina; there is nothing to consider. Get the Behringer Solina.

Most assuredly the Behringer. It had a stronger attack and the flanger sounded more on key

Great video. I have the original eminent solina. Both of these are good.

One sounds analog, the other doesn't. Night and day to my ears. I know, I know, the go to is "in a mix". I don't know what kind of music people have in mind when they say that, but not all music is a densely packed nightmare. Some music actually has a lot of space for sounds to breath. That said, neither sound like the original. The Behringer sounds like a modern cleaner (or new condition, idk) version of the crusty original. The Arturia I wouldn't take for free.

So true (the "in a mix" bit). For the original I can't tell but I can imagine.

It's a very nostalgic sound. Also, Phaser is comfortable. I admired SOLINA, and 50 years ago I made strings similar to SOLINA using 3 BBD elements (1024 stages), an operational amplifier, a 49-key keyboard, and 10 printed circuit boards. I had a hard time with the 3-phase chorus part of BBD. I phase-modulated it with two types of LFOs (about 0.2Hz and 5-7Hz), but the BBD produced a huge noise, so I needed a noise gate. Since I made it myself, I was able to create phase circuits in 120° increments, and there were no patents involved. After that, I connected KORG's Digital Chorus SDD-3300 to KORG's PolySix to obtain a 3-phase chorus tone. Currently, I'm using Arturia's Solina V2 software synthesizer on Cubase 13.

Cool story, are you an electronics engineer or a hobbyist? Do you still have your FrankenSolina? How did it sound, was it in the ballpark of other string machines?

@@lundsweden I'm an electronic circuit design engineer. I don't have SOLINA anymore. I am enjoying using Arturia's software SOLINA V2.

The big difference is in that phaser. The vst phaser doesn't sound too good

Hardware sounds better, but in a mix the Arturia will probably do. It's tough to justify another purchase just for that one sound.
