Theory of Mind is the feeling that others have minds and consciousness such as you do. I believe this develops around age two (that may be wrong), but the point is it develops when you are incredibly young. The mere fact that Theory of Mind exists is an interesting topic in our evolution as social animals.

@@johnjohnathan1939 Well, it would be a part of our own consciousness, or subconsciousness, or unconscious, conditioning us, and not some external entity. It would be a type of self-regulation poisoning us with what we deserved, i.e. if we're gullible, we deserve to be hood-winked. In the end, we would awaken to the inhibitive self-imposed conditioning and experience spiritual awakening (or 'enlightenment' or 'nirvana') and become the fully aware Buddha/God again. Perhaps that's the point of life; to forget we're God (after all, God gets bored of being omnipotent) by making itself a baby and having to grow up and then re-experience the magical moment of remembering it's God.

I remember well, that when I was three years old I asked my mother, "If I can't see other people live their life and see their thoughts, how it it possible for them to exist?". I remember too, her shock. She spent much of my childhood trying to convince me that the world and it's people are real. Solipsism can get so deep, I can become so disconnected, that my motivation to do anything can disappear. Why bother if nothing is real? I really have to work hard to bring myself out of that space so I can be functional again. I've really been struggling and suffering for the last three weeks.

“Are there any other solipsists out there?” is an inherently hilarious question. I love the idea that I’m the only person that exists and I just heard that joke. The meta nature of any discussion about solipsism is marvelously humorous.

I am not the only person that exists.. it is just that no one has access to my consciouses..the same with..you. I believe that you of course you exist.. but in order to "KNOW" that you exist, Imust have access to your consciousness,which of course is not possible. BELIEVING canot be equated with KNOWING..each human being has his own consciousness..you can not be in my shoes,you came alone you will go alone,,, philosophy is always ABOUT AND ABOUT AND ABOUT ..never ever hitting the center.T there is a difference between decribing the the taste of an apple and TASTING THE APPLE ..

@@zerototalenergy150 Right. But solipsism as explained in this video is specifically about adopting the idea that one is the only true consciousness in existence. I know it’s me because I can observe myself directly. Under that assumption , I also somehow created this video that taught me about solipsism… which includes a joke about how the philosophical zombie narrating it is actually the only true consciousness. The meta of it all is quite amusing.
@briley21772 жыл бұрын
@@micahwright5901 That’s the problem… you couldn’t have created a video that taught you something you didn’t know, because before you watched the video you were ignorant and you’d have to known the thing that you taught yourself in order to create the video before you watched it. A single mind cannot simultaneously “know a thing” and “not know a thing;” these are direct logical negations and both cannot be simultaneously true - that’s a contradiction. The very fact that you learned something new from a mind that is seemingly separate from your own disproves the notion of solipsism.

See, I remember the first time I had full consciousness, remember vividly saying I’m here. I didn’t know my family and not even there names. is like I came to this body. I believe that how we think is how the world is going to go, the manifestation rules applies here. If you believe it enough it happens and trust me it happens It’s a narcissistic way to see the world but I cannot explain my life to no body without thinking I’m crazy. I even had to get a therapist were we discuss this and she don’t get me like everybody else. We will see in the future if we are actually going to be “awaken” (referring to remembering who we are) I believe this is why we are here, my father has the same beliefs and I didn’t even know. He thinks his god in a world that he created. My believe is that maybe I was feeling alone so we created the universe so we don’t feel alone I feel energy around me and sometimes I can manipulate it, I have found people with the same “skill” and the crazy thing is that we feel it at the same time and in the same position. This world isn’t what we all think. We aren’t meant to scape the reality but to master reality. It’s the story of your body not your soul.

This is what I heard the Greeks thought. And as for the Buddhist. Treating all life with respect because it is essentially apart of yourself. When we die we are stripped of our egos and remember who we are. Like many leaves on one tree.

So other people than you exist, you’re still thinking as a human, which is fine and understandable but everyone has a body and the mind of their own, but when we get to consciousness, everyone shares the same consciousness and this way, we are all one there is no separation you see separation because you see a body in front of you that you call other but if you strip one down to just their essence they are consciousness just like you you guys are the same you came from the same place you are the same “person”/entity most people refer to as god. Subjectivism(its what I call it, Idk if its been a coined term) : The universe puts you in this life, this fleshly existence. The twist is that you are the universe trying to make sense of itself(that part has been around for a while with the new age movement). Thus everything becomes possible. All humans are nodes with their own perspective. You can be the sole conscious being while everyone else is reacting to your higher self projecting them as NPCs(fairly recent concept that I dont currently like very much but its helpful for the illustration) or youre in a world where everyone is it''s own being as it is just as interesting. In a multi-verse of infinite possibilities both can be true at the same time. In fact, if youre the universe trying to experiment with as much possibilities as you can, you WILL make sure both possibilities happen in some way or another. Even an instance that contradict itself; like you're that being from that "Egg" short story by Andy Weir which stipulates you are slowly living every life possible in no particular order and only remember them when you are between existence. In one of them you live a life of enlightenment which splits you from one going back to another life and one proceeding to an higher state within that specific soul. Memories then become a tool to help you learn.. All for the universe to make sense of it all. What I like about it is that it makes it so all religion are right...not only all religions but all beliefs. You die, you go where you subconsciously thought youd go all your life. Heh, there would still be wars over it I bet.

We don’t have direct access to other minds so there is no way to prove they exist or not from a first person basis. We can ask other people what they see but that is indirect access. So other minds exist just that we don’t have direct access to them.

Solipsism reminds me of the Greek concept of hubris. If you are the creator of all, if everything is you, you amount yourself to a god. You deny any and all thought from somebody else. It’s difficult to disprove and prove. To me what disproves it is that when I talk to somebody they can tell me things I did not know. I could think I know something about somebody, simplify who they are in my head, that person can disprove my thoughts of them.

I utterly despise this philosophy. The only way out of it is through yourself. In my case, I noticed that in all of my dreams that I can only hear and see, but my senses of touch, smell, and taste are not present. I have had several dreams where I’ve been hurt but I have felt no pain. I can only “see” and “hear” let’s say someone hitting me but not feel it. Whereas in external reality I can perceive not only all the known senses but everything is experienced much more clearly than a dream. Also there appears to be a continuity in this reality whereas dreams are consistently changing. In my own opinion, it just seems the mind is better at receiving data and interpreting it, than it is at creating one entirely on its own. At least in my own case.

The problem with manipulating the reality is that it reveals that you are dreaming, it kills the realness of the experience therefore it would not last long for you, it's like using cheat codes in the game, you could skip all kinds of missions and objectives without any problem, it kills the journey, no one wants to be trapped in a lucid dream, always wake up into the same place with no way out! So the only way is to hide the fact you are dreaming, no access to the truth, no past memory and also the limitation of though process all help you believe that you are not dreaming, you are living and it's all real, you feel pain, you get sick, you are a powerless ant, playing God is boring, you have access to anything, there is no goal or need, at best it's just mindless masturbation without any meaningless experience, there is no game without no rule, and the rule is limitation, it adds all kinds of mini games to enjoy, a long lasting experience, a life story with real characters for you to tell yourself, it's the perfect design. Still I'm not saying it's the truth, but I think if you think about it, it could work when you are the only conscious mind, you could use a dream machine to fool yourself into live like this, full of meaningful interactions. But still it could be wrong, you could be a multidimensional being that could pilot endless conscious minds, switching between them to process them all at once, like the way CPU works, it only could process one thing (thread) at a time, the crazy fast switching cycles between these processes in the queue lets you experience running all the apps at once.
@OceanicMemory4 жыл бұрын
@connextro Yes, you identified as a human would never do that experiment, but you as the eternal conscious being would play all kind of games, there is no good or bad or any real truth for you in the game, it's just rule sets, and for limitation to work you have to have rule sets, pain, pleasure, and all kind of things for punishing rewarding systems, otherwise there is no game! Still no one forced you to believe this bullshit, you are the one who determined what is real or not, if you believe this experience is real and you are living in base reality then you act on it, it's real for you. it's all fake theory for you so why bother thinking about it, if this experience cause pain and suffering for you then maybe it's time to realize it's a game, that take away the seriousness of it, you would enjoy the moment of experience instead of looking for pleasures or solution in future or looking back and remembering bad memories, it doesn't matter, it's just an experience, living like a human in a cause and effect logical world, for me it's just another dream, but with other rule set, it's way more stable, and you create more meaningful interactions in it because of this systemic design.
@OceanicMemory4 жыл бұрын
I'm not talking about what is real or fake, it's silly looking at things this way, brain is just an object in the reality, a place holder, a receiver, like an icon, it doesn't do anything, believing in material world is the base of the problem, you can't see beyond that cause you limit yourself to it. research non-duality, you attach meanings to these objects, everything is real when you have no access to higher realities, it's all about knowledge and access to information, if you have no memory of it then you are limited, you shape your belief to be compatible to your vehicle of experience. I'm not here to talk about debunking physical reality, it's real for me too because I pilot a physical human body, if you start working on other vehicles in your mind, you see it's all the same, input/ output sensory devices, they all filter data so you could experience a reality compatible to that vehicle, it's so advanced we have no clue what we are dealing with. So all I'm saying is that limitation is what makes the game, you have to have rules, otherwise it's chaos and meaningless interaction, the belief that everything is this cause and effect material world create a solid dream world to live in, to wake up in and create long lasting experience. That's it, there are endless realities you could experience, you could even create your own even with limited human mind. anyway, It's just about your point of view, you could limit yourself to whatever you want, it's the truth for you, but there is higher truths, I seek beyond the logical world, it's magical but it's strangely there, like a universal mind behind all the things we experience, even our bodies, like a machine to create cause and effect system. It's just amazing, there is nothing to worry about, it's just fun to find what you are, it's not a religious belief, it's direct experience for many who go to this path. anyway, it's not serious, when you wake up from these dreams, they lose their powers, you realize you are beyond it, this way you should not have anxiety, it's your world, we have to grow up and trust this world we are living for now. Good luck
@shannontaylor18494 жыл бұрын
@connextro Yes! Now you're getting it! :-) All of 'us' are at the center of everything, just like everything else. Like momma said, "You're unique... just like everybody else." Thus, the limitation game- the one place 'we' are free to lose our perception of the centric universe experience by living the experience.

The fact that you're able to read what I am writing and understand what I am saying, means I exist and I can communicate with you and discuss solipsism and maybe learn from eachother and establish new perspectives on life and reality through sharing collective knowledge and understandings. However, you think that it is only you that exists and the universe is created by your consciousness? Ok let's say I think that too, so does that mean that you exist only as a result of my mind creating you and because I can talk to you and see you and when I'm not thinking about you or talking to you or seeing you, you don't exist? No. If you hadn't have read my comment you wouldn't have likely known I existed, but that doesn't change the fact that I did exist before this comment and will exist after this comment (until I die of course), and exist now. So do you, and you will continue to exist because you are, we are, the epitome of life. Also, to ask the question "is my mind the only one" first needs language and understanding of said language to articulate the question. Where does this language come from, if not other minds (or other forms of consciousness)? Language always precedes us and it must come from without us. Without language coming first, the world and ourselves are both unintelligible. More broadly, you might say that solipsism is an unfalsifiable hypothesis. You can neither prove or disprove it, it changes nothing about how the world we experience works, you gather no knowledge from choosing to believe in such a hypothesis. Let me put it this way, solipsism states that you can't be sure of anything other than your own existence (consciousness), that means you can't rely on the empirical beliefs or scientific knowledge (thoughts, beliefs, evidence etc) that you have based your beliefs in solipsism on. It's a self defeating hypothesis with no end goal of enlightenment . . . But of course we can agree to disagree. Oh and believe me, I have a very open mind and have played devils advocate with myself for quite some time and studied the varying philosophical views and beliefs that make up solipsism. But ultimately as I've said, its indefinitely self refuting and meaningless. The long and short of it is "solipsism is a stupid self defeating hypothesis, disguised as a philosophical thought experiment". Theres a reason most respected philosophers won't even engage in such bullshit.
@OceanicMemory3 жыл бұрын
@@uk_picker7307 I don't agree with solipsism, it's a faulty way of seeing the world. I don't mix human mind with universal mind, in that sense I am you and you are me, the difference in experience is just time, and time do not exist out of time and space reality which is simulated for action, so if you look at it from that point of view, you and I both exists and we are real in that sense because we have the same experiencer behind us, localized human mind is just a filter to create individuality for the interaction in the dream reality, and when you experience it in now moment it all works in real time, and yes this information is useless For me it's just a way to look at this well designed system, it makes more sense for me, it fit in my puzzle board. If you look at it from your human mind and say I'm only real then that is silly, like solipsism, If you look at it from the source of your own experience which in beyond these objects, then you see it's all you interacting yourself forever, that is a real light and everything else is just a reflection, only one light source exists, but there could be endless reflections. It's all about including, not excluding. Take care

solipsism is an entirely personal philosophy i have discovered. it can be used effectively for self motivation and in existential crises - but it isn't the whole truth. a matter of fact is that no human ever can contemplate the entirety of the world/god/existence/universe/life (all synonymous to me). even in the mind of a solipsist a great grey area exists as to the root and cause of his own existence ; and this grey area can never be solved - never. so the only function of solipsism is to organize, minimalize and boil down the facts of the world as we know it to the self - it is very much like throwing all the furniture in your home into one single room. howbeit thats ALL its can do. one more thing that solipsism reiterates is the perceptuality of the self's existence. whether or not other selves exist forever - it is true that you the reader shall live forever - you were never created nor will you ever be destroyed - you were always there and will always be there . peace

So when they start discussing dreams. Wouldn't you have to prove that in dreams you discuss your emotions with others in your dream? The idea is that emotions must be a public language, not that public language can not exist without other minds. The real test is do you ever tell other people in your dreams, directly, how you feel. Projections of your own mind would be aware of your own minds emotional state, so to tell a projection of your mind, "I am sad" is redundant. It would be what we consider as a lapse in sanity. Discussing something with yourself is something we all do, but have you ever had to say, "I am sad" before feeling sad? The precursor to having created the word "sad" is to describe to other conscious minds a perceived emotional state. What's gonna really mess someone up is this. How do you know how you feel, i.e., "Pain" is how someone else feels it. Maybe they feel it how your feel "pleasure" but they hate the feeling they see it as "pain" and maybe out emotional states are more of a social agreement on what event SHOULD make you feel than anything real.

Nothing exists unless it’s being observed therefore the observer and the observed are one.

Does anyone else feel that they are the only real person here and that everyone else are just actors like in the Truman Show or NPCs like in the Matrix or just characters in a dream? That would explain why people don't make sense and can't see obvious things that I see. Interesting question: When you are in a dream, you can talk to other people in the dream. So are the people in your dream self-aware and sentient and conscious? If not and they are merely creations of your own mind, then how do you know if people in the waking real world are real and self-aware or not? It's impossible to know. Any of you think about this too? Another possibility is shared solipsism, which is that there are a few real people or real souls in this matrix or dream, but most people are NPCs. Matt from the Quantum of Conscience channel talks about this and that's why most people are not awake at all.

It is a possibility still.

Philosophy Vibe The notion of a brain in a vat, absent any inputs, is logically contradictory in virtue of our experiences in reality. Specifically, the fact that human beings can learn things, by being taught, disproves this notion. A brain cannot simultaneously “know a thing” and “not know a thing.” Therefore, even if my brain were capable of constructing every other person with whom I interact, my brain cannot manifest a person who knows a thing that I do not yet know, and then use that manifestation to cure an ignorance that I maintain despite supposedly manifesting that other mind that simultaneously knows the thing that I do not know. In order to bestow this invented person with the knowledge they possess, I would have to have this knowledge. But if I possessed this knowledge, I could not be in a state of ignorance myself. A single brain cannot occupy the role of the student and simultaneously manifest the source of the knowledge that cures its own ignorance. The notion that any mind could be the only mind is self-contradictory and, therefore, it is logically impossible.

While we cannot definitively prove that there are other minds, it boils down to evidence and probabilities. All evidence and logic indicate there are other minds. So, the odds are it is "almost" certain that there are other minds.

In a way it doesn't realy matter if other people truly exist or not because its impossible to know for sure. Its probably plausable and beneficial to treat them as if they do and so I do but if I'm being honest I can only know that I exist as I do and nothing else. I believe it's worth being honest if you can even if the truth is unpalatable. You never know when an admitted truth may be beneficial to you or your imagined world at large.

@@prime7441 To ask the question "is my mind the only one" first needs language and understanding of said language to articulate the question.

As I listened to the pro solipsism theories, I found myself thinking of the falsification principle from your other video. Couldn't we apply that to the increasingly wild ideas such as 1: Only my mind exists 2: Failing that, I might be God, or 3: Failing the prior two, God possibly made the entirety of existence just for my mind? It seems to me that someone who actually believed in solipsism would not be open to falsification.

Like the example of dreams, neurology also provides an example of “what might not be the case?” A person experiences neurones firing in their brains-rather than actually perceiving ‘the world’ as such. The fact that our brain chemistry ‘constructs’ all our experience of perception and knowledge is astonishing. Well, at least it has not yet been falsified that all human experience and knowledge is perfectly correlated with neurological activity. Indeed, existence might be a mere hallucination of a being or multiple beings because a person’s experiences are, in fact, a hallucination both when they dream and when they wake. The idea sometimes associated with solipsism, that ‘I am God,’ is not necessarily solipsistic. For example, even some monotheistic religions say that only God exists from an absolute perspective (essence=existence)-but these monotheistic religions are not necessarily solipsistic. Some branches of Hindu philosophy and religion insist that a person can become directly aware in their experience that “I am God experiencing some kind of thought.” Such awareness is not a belief, per these philosophies, but a direct experience. Again, a person’s belief that, ‘I am the one God and you are the one God’ is not necessarily solipsistic. Christian theology has some of this Vedic thinking. The “Logos” of God is the Perfect self-understanding of God. Interestingly, 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine tends to ‘blast’ people into such an experience for about 20 minutes-out of their awareness of being a human and into an awareness of God’s eternity and having a sort of ‘thought’ of a human life. Back to Christian religion-humans (who, it is fundamentally good that they are “other” than God) are divinized (‘made-God’) through incorporation (‘in the body’) into the hypostatic (‘personal’ or ‘facial’) union between God and human in Jesus. Christianity slightly (maybe 51%) emphasizes the Unity of God. So, Christianity is technically monotheistic; but about 49% of Christianity emphasizes the Otherness or Community within God. Christians only speak of ‘self-love’ metaphorically-true love (in the sense that God is truly love) fundamentally implies an otherness within God. Christianity is almost polytheistic. Many people believe that other people exist and have subjective/conscious experiences. Many people also think that there is only one being who ultimately exists. Very few people believe that there is only one experiencer (who is me and not God). Slightly more people say that there is one being-who is God and is me and is others. Quite a few people maintain that there are multiple conscious beings at an ultimate level.

I neither accept solipsist philosophy nor reject it, but just think for a moment about whether or not there may be some people that actually are philosophical zombies. We know that anesthetics can shut consciousness off and that certain drugs can shut it off while the person maintains their actions as they normally would (although this may be linked to memory formation more than anything.) I just think it would be fascinating to interact with someone that you could be sure was a philosophical zombie, but the problem is that knowing whether they were or were not may ultimately be impossible.

Having direct access to another person's mind is an impossible task. Solipsism concludes from an impossiblility that only the person having the thought exists. Now imagine two scenarios: 1. There is only one person who exist, hence you cannot see into other people's minds. 2. There are many people who exists, and since having direct access to another person's mind is an impossible task, none of them have access to each other's minds but they still exist. Which one sounds more real to you? In both cases you acknowledge the existence of your own mind. But in the first case, you deny the existence of other minds based on an impossibility. Imagine this: you were born with no sense of taste. You claim that salt doesnt have a taste, simply because it is impossible for you to know the taste. Also, if you were really a solipsists, wouldn't you want to just die to know what happens next? Moreover, if there is only one single mind, why would that one single mind want to dream another reality like this one? I mean you can just be which is something I would have done. I would never get bored because I am enough for myself. And the last point on language and dream. Your dreams are a reflection of your reality and your language. 10:21 There would not be a need for the base reality to exist if you were the only one who existed. But since you exist, you dream.
@lifes40123 Жыл бұрын
False. A solipsist can still fear death since he/she is still a human who's instinct is to fear death. Since the solipsist argument is pretty much you are God, a solipsist could just be a bored God who erased its own memories and entered this Universe or figment of its own imagination to experience all the joy and pain of being a human. If you were a God, you would get bored from eternal pleasure and unlimited powers so you created the universe and humans to experience struggle

I personally do not think that it is necessary that only a single conscious mind exists, just that you can only be absolutely 100% sure about your own existence. Everything else you can't be absolutely sure it is not a dream or a simulation, but that does not mean that it therefore must be a dream or simulation. So you can't argue that you should just go ahead and murder everything around you because they don't suffer and possibly don't really exist at all, because at best you can only say that there is a possibility they are not real. To me solipsm and atheism are very closely related: the atheist just doesn't believe that the statement 'god exists' is proven to be true (but that does not mean they believe the statement 'god does not exist' is true) solipsist do the same with the statement: 'reality as we experience it is real' which they do not believe is a fact, but that doesn't mean that it is a fact that it isn't real.

I don't really get the private language argument. Language could be combined with certain intonation and facial expressions and for the most part it is. The message is still conveyed through it and by reading one's external indications you could connect the words to them and then give that language meaning.

Good video, however, I don't think the Private Language Argument gets as much credit as it deserves here. I think the dream objection fails because someone has to be able to identify a dream state, which can only be done by reference to reality. As Kenneth Gallagher puts it: "It would be literally nonsensical to ask: how do I know that waking is not what I ordinarily mean by dreaming, because if it were, I wouldn't know what I ordinarily mean by dreaming". Even "lucid dreams" are known to be lucid dreams by reference to reality.

You a solipsist? Also solopsists really don’t make sense, if everything is figments of their imaginations they should be able to do whatever they want, much like within a lucid dream, they should be able to kill, steal, and do everything, solipsism is so stupid and I can’t believe I was considering believing that bs.

Kinda feels like it's being read from a script that the readers are just now seeing for the first time. Especially the one on the left. The informational aspect of this video is good, it's exactly what I was searching for, but the delivery could use work.

I think it just adds to the quirky nature of these videos. He’s the straight man, so the driest delivery aids his points anyway.
