Absolutely love the Peak District, have done this walk but started from Castleton to do a circular walk. Lovely to see it again. Jaggers clough, what a gem. Jaggers clough, what a gem. There's a lovely cafe next to Edale Station where you can get tea and home made cake before the walk back. Excellent.

Just got home after a day spent re-laying part of a previously bodged patio in 28 degrees Centigrade, 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Really enjoyed this film Patrick. Love Youth Hostels. Spent a few days recently at the YHA at the Sill near Hadrians Wall and an independent hostel in Wooler...

Wonderful walk Patrick, with your music setting the mood - what could be better. It brought back memories of hosteling in the early 1960's.Always by bicycle never walking. No "proper" cycle clothing just a voluminous cape to keep the rain off.I used to cycle to work and college to save the bus fare. If I remember correctly, we had to do a "task" before leaving in the mornings eg chopping wood/ cleaning. Very happy simpler times Patrick.

Thanks again Heyden, your comments are very much appreicated as always. Yes I remember having to do a job when I was a YHA member, normally washing the pots after breakfast or evening meal, or sweeping the dormitory. Bet they don't do that now 👍

The weather sure was different when they erected Hope Cross Patrick. They wouldn't recognize 40 degrees C. Yeah, it's been roasting alright. Ah, the Vale of Edale as you passed through an old route - what a treat it all was on this walk. I could feel it was full of optimism - it must have been the rain. Hey, no optimism at the YHA though - it might be changed today. But wow what a great end - love that village Patrick. I aim to do the Pennine Way one day and enjoy that atmosphere. Well, thoroughly enjoyable. All the best as always. Mark

Morning Mark, yeah Hope Cross has survived well throughout the years, although I gather the top piece came off at some point and was remounted! 😆 it was great to walk that section through the Vale of Edale after so long, all seems very different now of course. I'm sure Edale YHA is great now, I just had those particular memories of my one night stay there all those years ago. Edale is a magical place Mark, great if you do the Pennine Way at some point, that'll be a brilliant adventure for you. Thanks for watching as always and all the best 👍

@@solitaryrambler Yeah, love the way these things survive. Of course we can't stop time. Hey, customer service may bot have been such a big thing back when you visited. Beautiful walk and it was nice to hear tales from your youth. Thanks to you I have a new channel to watch, I've subscribed to Jennifer. I don't know if you have completed this walk of the Great Ridge you were talking about but I did it a couple of months ago. So as to make it not too much of an out and back I parked at the bottom of the broken road (Old Buxton Road) and on the first bend I took off diagonal and came up on the saddle of The Great Ridge just before Hollins Cross and walked up to Back Tor and Lose Hill (which is apparently pronounced Loss Hill, strange) then walked back along to Mam Tor and back down by Blue John's Cave and the broken road. It make it a nice circular ish walk. Unless you are doing the longer circular walk from Town. But from the Broken Road there was plenty of parking too. I really enjoyed listen8ng to your stories and voice over. Great vlog and thank you for sharing. One question, do you have a vlog with a gear list at all? I bought a SmartMike+ to cut down on wind noise but it used its own app to get to my phone camera and for some reason didn't utilise video stabilisation. So I have a rather jumpy vlog of Back Tor and Lost Lad on my Ethel Challenge. Again, thank you for the upload.

Many thanks again Chris for taking the time to watch this and for all your kind comments. Stay tuned for the Great Ridge walk. I've never really done a video about gear as such. However, in my playlists there is one called "Documentaries and behind-the-scenes information", in which there is a video about my camera and accessories that I shot during the first locakdown in 2020. This may help. All the best 👍

I’m back in the Peaks in a few weeks time for a course, can’t wait! 😀 YHAs can really vary, I stayed at the Ilam YHA, wonderful building, friendly staff and lovely breakfast but the rooms were tiny and cramped and poor ventilation. A truly fabulous walk there Patrick. You certainly took in some of the fabulous sights. Hope Cross is such a fab landmark. Lost count of how many photos I’ve taken of that one. Jaggers Clough is lovely too. I suppose the benefit of the dry spell is you didn’t have to wade through a deep water crossing like you sometimes have to in winter. Must have been nice to have visited Edale YHA again after all this time. I have a love/hate relationship with the YHA, but I’ve never stayed in that one so can’t comment on which category it would fall under 😂. Really enjoyable watch as always Patrick

Hi Anthony, thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah I remember from one of your videos Hope Cross was your favourite marker post. Jaggers Clough was a mere trickle during this walk, so easy to cross. I do like the challenge of wading through a bit though when there is more water. It was great visiting Edale YHA again. When I first became a member, it was great and made those early hiking holidays good for the pocket. But then a couple of years later I discovered how much nicer it was to pay a little more for that comfortable bed in a private room of B&Bs! 😂 All the best 👍

Another fine walk Patrick. There are definitely times when it's difficult to make a walk into a round trip, however much you might like to do one. That's when the bus, or train, comes in handy. Better in my mind to do a linear walk with public transport for the return trip rather than walk back the same way.

I’ve never stayed n the Youth Hostel but camped regularly at Coopers Farm I believe it’s called, or was as I’m sure it’s changed now, it’s the one right in the centre of Edale behind the Post Office, facing the Nags Head Pub. Unfortunately, I don’t, or can’t camp these days due to my health and hiking the walks you do are definitely out but I still watch as I can do part of the walks and also as an amateur photographer that mainly shoots Street Photography but wants to try more Landscape I get ideas of where I can go. I know this is the wrong way around but as in your next video to this, I want to go up Mam Tor but it seems the part I want to go is more towards Loose Hill so would be just too far for me, 25 years ago it was no problem but not these days. I still absolutely love the Peak District and spent a couple of nights not to far from the Roaches in 2020, I did get up part of those, near the old hut which you can hire, I forgotten the name of it now but I’ll be venturing back up there with my camera soon enough. I do miss walking those hills, I’ve done most of the Dark Peak area way back when, around Kinder Scout etc and even got to see the famous Kinder Downfall do it’s trick once which isn’t something you can really plan but great to see. Thanks for the memories

Wonderful, Patrick! How do you do it? All your own work and it all fits seemlessly. I'm intrigued how you do the bits away from the camera. You must walk back to pick it up and then back again. It must double your journey and hardly out of breath!

Thanks Dennis. I do just that with the camera, which I talked a little about in my two Hartington videos I made last year 👍

That marker post looks like a giant nail that's been hammered into the ground! Did you forget your take rain jacket on this walk or are you YOU hard as nails? :)

Yeah it does look a bit like that for sure. I always carry waterproofs in my rucksack, but the rain didn't last long and was not heavy this day and it was just nice feeling the drizzle after all the recent hot dry weather 👍

That opening shot of the church ruins was so evocative. Ironically, I am currently in Hope, British Columbia, Canada where I am furthering my culinary skills. This is where they filmed the Rambo movies. I have a bone of contention with you. Last video you said you were going to reveal why you had not posted in 3 months. Talk about a bait and switch! LOL!!! I hope it was nothing serious...or scandalous. Tune in next week as the Solitary Rambler reveals ALL!! Cue the dramatic music, Dum dum dummm.

Haha don't get too excited about that William, it's not that interesting really! 😂 Trouble is by the time I've talked about other stuff in my videos, I find there's no time to mention that. I will at some point though and it's all good, from my point of view any way 👍

Stayed at Edale YHA in the 80s too.Not sure if I'm right, but I seem to remember back then you could stay at YHAs unaccompanied by an adult if you were 14.Am I right.

I don't recall that, but I'm sure you're right. I joined the YHA when I was 18, but went with school once before that 👍
