WYE VALLEY WALK FEATURING FOWNHOPE, BROCKHAMPTON AND CAPLER CAMP
"Fownhope, Brockhampton and Capler Camp”
Filmed 2nd October 2018
Post-production completed 26th August 2019
I continue to explore the less familiar section of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as I visit the Herefordshire village of Fownhope. My walk briefly runs alongside another part of the River Wye I’ve never seen before and a section of the Wye Valley Walk, leading me through the very peaceful village of Brockhampton and on to the remains of an Iron Age hill fort…..
Filmed in the Wye Valley in the county of Herefordshire. Locations include Fownhope, the Wye Valley Walk, Brockhampton, Capler Camp, Paget’s Wood and Common Hill. This is part of the series of films shot in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler
There is also a short “Introduction to the Solitary Rambler” video, which briefly explains what my films are all about: / solitaryrambler

How lovely. I lived in Brockhampton for several years and walked in those woods on the side of Caplor several times a week. They are magical in the early morning.

This part of Herefordshire is only matched by the magnificent views of the Marcle Ridge. There is no doubt in my mind tat the River Wye in its entire length matches any river on the planet. A truly beautiful river. Many thanks for your wonderful videos

Ooh I could have called in the Green Man for a pint of real ale, looked lovely, some stunning views there Patrick and a nice bit of up tempo music too, looked a great walk, the posts with the writing were interesting and the Church was a great find, thanks for taking us along too,was chuffed when I got a notification saying 120 had been uploaded,I'm delighted to say I'v been along the journey for every minute of them with you, from the early storyline hour long films to the slick beautifully made films we have today, not all the memories along the way have been the beautiful scenery and music,I remember you being stabbed with a syringe at the railway crossing, and sharing your anguish as you relayed the story of your Dad saving and then selling the organ, and a lot of the early films I watched when I was ill in January and February and I watched them through the early hours of the morning and they helped me get through it,but mainly your films have been about the scenery and the music and your calming company,I'll continue to look forward to them, bring on number 121 I can't wait ! Pete 👍

I did pop in the Greenman and the New Inn one evening whilst I was staying in the area last year. The Greenman was lovely inside, more of a restaurant really whereas the New Inn was more like your local pub. I was inspired by some music I had heard many years ago whilst visiting Fownhope, so my composition for this film was loosely based on what I heard. Thanks for following all my films from the very start Pete, glad you've enjoyed them all. Of course they're very different today to how they first started out, but it's nice you have watched them all. All the very best. Cheers, Patrick :)

Lovely as always. I really like how these rural villages come together with old traditions. The walk sounds fun and i wouldn't mind sampling some of that local home made cider either. Great scenery and weather for that time of year. Keep up the good work.

Another treat of a video you made here, Patrick. The beauty of the River Wye is well in evidence, and the views of the lovely countryside surrounding the quaint villages. The churches that you have pointed out, one at Fownhope (St. Mary's), and the other at Brockhampton (All Saints), are truly unique in architecture, in fact treasures. The post with the engraving in the timber are really fascinating, too. Thank you, for this film, Patrick, very enjoyable to watch.

Another fantastic video, the filming of these are excellent just like watching mini movies and I think the one thing which stood out for me among the list of businesses was the "Chimney Sweep" which we don't hear much about these days, I just had this impression of a lovely cottage in the village with an open fire blazing away on a cold winter's night, now I'm getting carried away :) I think it really nice that these villagers keep up with tradition and there's still that community spirit. Everything in these villages are so pristine, I've seen some beautiful churches on your videos so far but the All Saints church really stood out, really unusual and unique compared to some. I particularly enjoy your walks through woodland/country lanes where it's so serene, your choice of lunch venue was truly perfect! I've only one last word to say really, "Wonderful! :0) Patrick wherever you travel enjoy every moment and be safe...Thank you for sharing. Vivien 😊👍

I actually found out about the chimney sweep from the Fownhope Village website, as I did a lot of the other village's business information. Like you say it's something we hear very little of these days so it's nice there are still such businesses around. Herefordshire is well-known for the type of churches and buildings seen here, in particular those with black and white beams. I agree that All Saint's Church stood out, an incredible piece of architecture as well as such a peaceful location. I did enjoy eating my sandwich whilst sitting at that view over the Wye. Thanks again Vivien for watching and I'm sure this won't be the last time you hear that word "wonderful" again! Cheers, Patrick :)

Fabulous Patrick. You were right in my playground there. We used to go to the Fownhope Disco's as a young lad and my sister's after wedding do was at Brockhampton Court. What with Paul and I out back in them woods most weeks there are some special memories in the area for me. It seems you've created your own special memory to. Really pleased you could revisit the area and connect once more. A lot of things shared I had no idea of. So, thank you. Good going Patrick. It keeps on giving mate. All the best. Mark

Thanks Mark, good to know I was in your playground. Discos in Fownhope eh? I bet they were good times. I remember going to discos held in my old school gym in Chepstow. Brockhampton Court is a lovely venue for a wedding do, bet that was a fab time for you all. I guessed you and Paul would have been in most if not all of the woods I visited here, great area in which to have grown up I'm sure. It was a long day filming this one but I absolutely loved it, glad to have shared it with you Mark. Thanks again and all the best. Cheers, Patrick :)
