Soliton waves, or solitons, are a complex hydrodynamic phenomenon. They are waves generated by a vessel travelling in a specific conditions, that travel at supercritical speeds, and can travel large distances with little change to speed and amplitude.

Excellent presentation in few minutes for a significant role in dynamics of various physical systems. Thank you for imply this to Solitary wave theory that is "far away" of definition which propagates without any temporal evolution in shape or sizes when viewed on the reference frame moving frame moving with group of velocity waves. So in few minutes I have seen what I must illustrated in my head for hydrologic research - what when a single incident solitary wave passes over a submarged reef because it is disintegrates into a train of solitions (soliton fission), followed by a train of oscillatory waves. So thank you for effective presentation in few minutes! I can closely imagine on an simple explemple one of the major problems in the analysis of the recorded time series - the number of solitions N in the transmitted wave train behind the reef due to distinguish between solitions and oscillatory waves. These "Soliton waves" hold the key to FTL travel. If you could create a soliton wave in space-time you could "ride" or "surf" this wave with a spaceship and it would carry said ship wherever it wanted to go at superluminal speeds

That's a cool idea. However on board the Enterprise as it travels on the soliton wave, Picard looks out of the window & sees Earth travelling at FTL away from him. So is Earth riding a soliton wave too?

It wouldn't move you FTL you'd just be able to travel very far on little energy, I guess you could ride it forever, but also apply more energy as you speed up to keep the soliton with you, then eventually [potentially infinite time needed ...] you could reach FTL... But, realistically you'd never get there as there isn't enough space to travel

If you're travelling FTL, there'd essentially be an event horizon around the soliton warp bubble so you wouldn't be able to see earth. Let's imagine that we could see, then it would appear stationary and gradually it would fate out and become nothingness.

Beginning at 0:53 you have two separate equations showing gravity measured in ms^-1 . (This comment box won’t allow superscipts, so I am using the ^ to show that what follows is a superscript.) It should of course be ms^-2. The section starting at 1:21 is very intriguing and clear because you have laid it out so well, with a little box at the upper right showing increasing Froude depth, while the image shows the waves moving outwards and forwards until they become a soliton if confined in a channel. The clarity of this scene is also due to the fact that you don’t make the camera (the observer) swoop rapidly this way and that around the scene while the bow wave pattern is changing. If you had done that (as many videos unfortunately do), it would make it much more difficult for the observer to understand what is going on. To understand movement in a scene, the observer’s position needs to be kept still, or nearly still. Then he knows that all the motion he is seeing is motion in the scene in front of him. If the observer is made to glide constantly around, he cannot properly see what motion is due to his own motion, and what motion is motion in the actual scene in front of him. So a good video - but please check the units for gravity at 0:53.

When I was a kid I used to play in a drainage channel that used to get wonderful little soliton waves I absolutely loved. Good times! Also some years later apparently there was some earthquake around AUS that made waves that remodeled my local beach and I could get the longest rides off of the waves, a little wave could come up and knock you on your ass, they were very powerful so I wonder if some soliton effect was there.

I'm sure a physicist could provide a better response - and if there are any out there please enlighten us. It sounds possible - a supersonic shockwave is produced by bunched up sound waves that cannot escape each other. Solitons propagate ahead of the vessel as the energy is 'trapped' and builds in front of the vessel, and must discharge forward. So there are some similarities, although if a vessel increases its speed beyond critical Froude depth it will rise up on the water surface due to hydrodynamic lift and begin to plane. Would be interesting to see what would happen if the vessel was fixed and could not plane...

Seems soliton mathamtics have amazing amounts of harmonics. Meaning fractal. And like everything with harmonics and fractal. It is ever living (seen in the soliton wave) and you can notice biology follows this concept to evolve and stay alive.

They can happen and have been observed. Although the lab is the only place that you will get them being generated continuously - typically the increase in resistance will cause a vessel to slow significantly. More often are the 'waves of translation' - caused at critical Froude depth but not in a restricted channel. So that means the existence of a soul though it seems mythical, is not that quit unlikely according to that very same mechanism and that the soul can continue as an energy pattern of the brains functions (which are of course energetic pattern as result of neuronal flow) in special circumstances to exist without the vessel (see that formula for froude depth in the video) - that means the body which generate that type of energy pattern in form of neuronal flow. I don´t say it is a proof for the existence of the soul but it is not an unscientific hypothesis anymore.

People really need to stop using the word "complex" willy-nilly. To me, it is MERELY a solution of partial differential equations coupled with boundary conditions and properties of the medium. Complex phenomena is an entirely different thing. Also, don't start defining things this way, because it literally provides NO useful information about what anything is. The basic definition of complex simply means having several interconnected parts - but that is literally all of the interesting science. Either way, most people will have no real intuition about what 'complex' means and it is usually used as a filler word when someone finds a particular topic personally hard to understand. Complexity science is an emerging field that describes certain classes of phenomena, so I would avoid using the term unless it truly is 'complex'. EDIT: Yes, my tone might be a bit sharp. I am very passionate about this topic because I am unfortunately a graduate student in a "Complex Systems" program and I absolutely HATE the title. Why? Because it provides no useful information and requires that simple introductions become long-winded explanations because basically NO ONE/EMPLOYERS/FRIENDS/PEERS knows what this means. Honestly, I think a different title should be used for my program or we need to do a better job at communicating this technical meaning to the general public.

Ostensibly, his topical discussion matches the definition of "complex" which you stated. Besides, language is partially composed of loanwords: words that don't necessarily maintain the exact same meaning or conceptual providence, but are mutable by the context in which they are used. Take the word "impact" for example: in a purely scientific sense, "impact" is used to define high force or shock. But take the same word within the context of literature or communication, and the word shifts to denote the relative sense of effect a particular rhetorical device might have; so again, keeping the same understanding of high force or shock while being much less quantifiable, as it pertains to emotions and cultural mores. Take dentistry as another example: "impact" in this field is simply a tooth that has failed to breach the skin of the gum, and results in a high degree of pain and discomfort; it has nothing to do with high force or shock, or emotional meaning. Again -- the same word, but not the same definition. He used the word complex in a layman's manner to confer the basic idea and the feeling to the audience of why the wave is so fascinating to study. I suppose you could say that this is all part of the "complexity" of language and communication: the method in which you transmit ideas is composed of many interconnected parts, and the behavior of these and how they articulate is difficult to explain or predict. Thus, there was no need to confront the OP on his word use, or really try and position yourself as one of the elite with your understanding of certain words in relation to other fields of science. I can confidently say that the same topic you raised, phrased differently, would have won you many interested parties - myself included. As it stands, you simply come off as a jerk.

@@Anthrolithos I am a graduate student in Complex Systems and I often have to explain the technical meaning of "complex" to peers and others I interact with because it is part of my job - not because I want to be argumentative. Perhaps it was my frustration with the word that leaked into my tone, but it was a sincere and benign, albeit impassioned, explanation. I am sorry that you have that feeling, but I would suggest that you avoid making judgments about the character of comment authors when text can never communicate the nuances needed to know the nature of another human being. That being said, I argue with many of my friends because we like playing Devil's advocate with one another, but we are still dear friends who love each other. If our discussion played out as KZbin comments, people might immediately think either person was being antagonistic. But again, one cannot know by text alone.
