C'mon man, Han speaking Shyriiwook (Wookie's language) wasn't only funny but a plot device, he needed to speak it because the Troopers where right above them. By the way...Han is one of my favorite characters of all time and i was kinda afraid this movie wouldn't do justice to him BUT IT WAS AMAZING. Much respect for you guys at Jedi Council!

Can I just say how refreshing it is to be in a Star Wars comment section that feels so positive? The bridge between TLJ and this was so damn toxic that it made me almost ashamed to admit I am a Star Wars fan. Here’s hoping this positivity lasts! We may disagree with some things but at the end of the day, we all love this galaxy far, far away. This community needs to come together, not be torn apart. Find balance. With this, the Force will continue to live and thrive for a long time. Love you guys, I’m out! May the Force be with each and everyone of you, always... :)

Nick Wiley Agreed. And as stated, we may disagree on certain aspects or entirety of some parts of Star Wars but that shouldn’t divide us and cause us to take sides. We should be civil and discuss not mindlessly attack just because certain opinions don’t line with our own. As a whole, this is Star Wars. We live, love, and breath it. I’m just stating that I’m happy most of what I’m seeing is positive discussion and reactions to this film and more. I’ve missed that aspect of it all, hoping it continues!

Sebastian Acha I never really check for comments as it is but just wanted to share my thoughts and kinda see where others stood as well, happy we seem to be more united/Civil than not. And with the people who didn’t really care for it it seems they’re open to discussions, Which is great! Of course, there is gonna be that group who continues to troll or talk down to others because hey, that’s cool or the norm these days but yeah, great seeing these civil discussions!

The Chewbacca saving the Wookiees moment worked for me. I think it is far better than if they’d been his actual family. “I can’t tell if he said family or tribe.” “What’s the difference?” He felt a connection to them and he had no choice but to act. Chewbacca finally being shown doing something independent of Han Solo. If they’d been his literal family, though, I would never buy him leaving them to join Han.

I thought that ending Beckett twist worked because Beckett’s turning on Han was so predictable. It was so predictable that Han even saw it coming, and used it to his advantage to turn the tables on him. I thought that was smartly written to even play off the fact it was suppose to be so predictable so that everyone from the audience to the main character expected it, and then they twist it where Han even comments he seen it coming, and used it against him in his plan.
@xRisK_Flash
@xRisK_Flash 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! This is the first comment I see talking about this. Beckett turning on them was the predictable "plot twist". But Han knowing he would do that and plan for it was the actual "plot twist", imo at least.

@Tyler_W
@Tyler_W 6 жыл бұрын
Hallucination it was a surprise out of left field that it was Maul but it makes complete sense in the context of the wider canon and the story at hand. We spent the whole movie wondering what Kira's allegiances were. If you followed wider canon beyond the films, you'd also know Maul is alive and as previously established in The Clone Wars, he developed extensive ties to the criminal underworld and even sought to take over parts of the galaxy through influence with and control of the criminal underworld. It was a completely unexpected surprise, but it's not out of nowhere.

I'm hoping that Qi'ra and Han turn out to be Rey's parents. This beats the Reylo theory. Remember from the Force Awakens that Han and Leia haven't seen each other for a long time and during this time he meets his 1st love and has an affair with her and Rey is a result of this affair. But Qi'ra never tells Han about Rey. Just a theory but this would be cool and very real world since affairs are common in real life. This actually would make sense with the Solo movie hinting that Qi'ra has force potential which would explain where Rey gets her force abilities.

36:00 Correct me if I'm wrong but the Beckett betrayal didn't fool Han. It was predictable, but it did not work against the movie and it wasn't lazy writting IMO. In fact, Han explained that he knew Becket could betray him the moment he said «don't trust anybody» and that MADE HIM PREDICTABLE. So his plan worked thanks to that obvious betrayal. He knew it was coming and Han even counted on that happening!

The point was that it was too obvious for him to say it in the first place, thus tipping the audience off ahead of time. Han didnt need him to say "not to trust him" then because of his experience with Beckett and the talks they had previously in the movie. Its basically saying the audience might be too dumb to read the tea leaves so lets remind them

I'm really confused at to what Kristian wants from a Star Wars movie. Seems to me he just keeps comparing everything to the OT. Guess what? You're going to be disappointed every single time. There's a reason the OT is so special. Because it was a once in a lifetime phenomenon. It is incredibly difficult to repeat that. And most of us saw the OT as kids so it's impossible for a new Star Wars movie to hit us the same as adults than when we were kids. That's why the OT is so special, because of how it made you feel when you were a kid. Just my thoughts!

I don’t see how anyone can conclude Beckett’s team are “good guys.” Enfys Nest knows they’re working for Crimson Dawn and she says the crime syndicates are worse than the Empire in terms of their cruelty. There’s no way she’d want Beckett to get the fuel. She only reveals herself at the end because she thinks a showdown there is pointless.

Enfys Nest wasn't bad writing at all. Guys one thing that we get confused is us sympathizing with the Crew doesn't make them good guys, they are outlaws. Solo was awesome! I was honestly baffled by most of Harloff’s criticisms. Han had to speak Wookie to Chewie so they didn’t tip off the guards, Qi’Ra totally ripped Han’s heart out at the end, and Val detonated herself while pinned by Imperial Viper Droids. Also, the look of Corellia was amazing IMO. It almost seems like he didn’t watch the movie or has too much dad fatigue. Much more on team Ken on this one!!

Yeah it was strange. So many of his points were totally off. I'd consider myself a lifelong fan but not necessarily hardcore, and even I knew Favreau's character was named "Rio"...you know, because they freakin say it in the movie, like several times. Either Kristian is purposefully trying to come off like a non-"shill", he's very fatigued or he's the only professional SW commentator to be canon that also somehow doesn't really care or pay attention that much anymore. He was seriously, oddly off his game here.

I disagree with what Harlof here; it made sense for Enfys Nest to attack the Hijackers (who are not good guys) there was no time to have a long discussion & debate while on the heist job and there is no reason for those hijackers to believe the cloud riders aren't just marauders even if the hijackers believed enfys nest would they care? in the 3rd act however the cloud riders had time and a huge numbers advantage to force the discussion if the hijacker crew refused to give up the hyperfuel they would have killed
@nbuckley282

BushidoBrownSama agree. Also the cloud riders saw red dawn as the enemy because they were hoarding resources along with the empire. Beckett’s crew was working for red dawn on that heist so they were the bad guys in their view. Later in the movie Nest starts to realize this. I like that they are exploring stories that aren’t so black and white. The only thing that was overlooked in the second meeting was that Beckett would have more of a personal struggle since Nest’s crew killed his woman. He would likely want revenge at that point.

Young Dre I agree! I have been trying to understand what went wrong for me with The Last Jedi, because even tho I had issues with it in the end I really liked it but I noticed something was lacking that was there with TFA and Rogue One and is something so simple: leaving the theatre with a huge grin in my face. That's so important in Star Wars, and Solo delivers on that regard. That childlike feeling of having witnessed a fun adventure and all the new things to explore with your imagination

Honestly everything you just said I am 100% in agreeance with. I felt the same way with TLJ as I was leaving the theater each time I saw it. I liked it but that grin or excitement wasn't incredibly high as it was with a majority of the others. This brought it back for me and from what I'm reading a lot of others. Here's hoping for repeat viewings like myself and word of mouth gets around. THIS is what we need/want in Star Wars. That sense of hope, imagination, and adventure. I hope more and more give this film a chance despite their skepticism and find that same excitement as we have!

Surprisingly really fun. Alden played young Han and not Harrison Ford and it worked so well Cast was great. Pacing was so-so. LANDO STOLE THE SHOW. Darth Maul took a HOT second for me to digest, in the span of seeing him for under a minute I was in awe, loved it, hated it, felt confused then figured out that it sets up Obi Wan's film. After my lukewarm expectations going in, I ended up really, really digging the hell out of it! Alden brought that cockiness and fake-it to you make-it aspect but still having that heart of gold we see throughout the Saga! The cast brought a great dynamic and bounced off each other so well. The action sequences were on-point especially the space sequences! Some issues were definitely the “name” scene and the middle act did slow just a tiny bit for my taste. Overall, I really enjoyed myself! Can’t wait to re-watch tomorrow :)

To the point of "why does Han want to be a pilot", he mentions that his father used to build YT-1300 transports on Corellia. That may explain why he wants to fly and why he loves the Falcon - maybe it reminds him of his dad or has something to do with him. To the point about Beckett not grieving for his girlfriend, well, maybe he has already learned the lesson that Yoda tried teaching Anakin, train yourself to let go of attachment. Beckett's philosophy was more like the "Jedi", than not. He was grieving in front of two graves and he punches Han in anger, then gets over it. I thought it was fine. That's just my .02 Otherwise good review! Oh and L337 being part of the Falcon - C3PO : (ESB) : "Sir, I don't know where your ship learned to communicate but it has a very peculiar dialect." I love it!

LoDoFilm Unlimited Media Agreed. I also think that Han was like Wash from Firefly in that he clearly wanted to escape his home planet for a long time, and thought he might need to be a pilot to do that. And just by Alden’s acting/common sense, I could tell that driving a speeder gave him a rare sense of freedom in his miserable existence. Plus, after he got off the planet, he had to get back to Qi’ra, and I think that added fuel to his dream of being a pilot :)

As I recall Enfys Nest didn't kill Val. She was surrounded by droids and had no time to escape. Also, even if Enfys is a rebel or a "good guy", at that moment in the movie she only knew that Beckett and his crew worked for Dryden. So, in her eyes he is just another enemy. Also, she had the chance to kill Beckett but she only disarms him. By the way Enfys could be seen as an extremist kind of rebel ala Saw Gerrera who I have no doubt would have killed anyone-even a rebel- if it gets in his way. Regarding the Beckett lack of mourning, I remember having seen in that scene some kind of burrial happening (wich can be interpreted as a sign of affection). So, when Han arrives, Beckett already had time to mourn the loss of his crew. Anyway, I think this was a great movie and left me pleasantly surprised!

I wish I could see the Disney roadmap for Star Wars...for the next 5-10 years. The problem with making these backstories, is that they these characters ultimately end up in a place we're familiar with. Obi Wan, Boba Fett, Solo, Jabba, Maul, and so on. Honestly, I don't know what I would like from Disney on the Star Wars front right now. I feel like they should finish up with Episode 9, take their foot off the gas and spend some time developing an epic Star Wars story line.

@@mintcoffee6030 I'm surprised people didn't like how he got his name. I just watched the film so I went in expecting to have a lot of issues with it given it's reception but now I'm starting to see why there's been all this recent talk of Star Wars fans just kinda being haters. Like, I'm no hardcore fanboy and I've been critical of TFA and TLJ. I thought Rogue One was pretty good even if the best part of the movie is like the last half hour. But Solo, this is a movie I was all but certain I didn't want and thought it'd just be some fanservice-y, better kept to a comic story that doesn't belong on film and I was totally wrong. Just about the whole film worked for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even how he got his name. I thought it'd be corny but it just seemed like a more empathetic imperial just cut him some slack and gave him one on the fly. I found it totally believable.

Sorry Collider crew, but you guys were waaaay off-base on this one. Solo was absolutely FANTASTIC. I'm actually in disbelief at how good it was after reading the mixed reviews. It reminded me so much of Raiders of the Lost Ark with its pulpy charm. This was classic Kasdan dialogue with great character moments given to every major character. Chewie's introduction and the Kessel Run were particularly great. I also loved John Powell's love theme for Qi'Ra -- just gorgeous. I have no clue what people are talking about when they mention the "slow" first act. If anything, my only real complaint is the third act -- I think they had one twist too many during the final Dryden Vos confrontation.

gokinsmen - I mostly second that... To Harloff point about Enfys: But they are not good guys, the smuglers, are they?. Han is with them, but they are not good guys, they almost kill Han in the beginning and their leader betrays Han at the end. At the end Enfys only try to talk with them because she had no other choise, if she kill them Dryden would arrived before and kill everybody Beckett explain that the fuel will not finish refining before Dryden arrived, so, she has no other option other than trying to enlist their help, and if Han was not there, she would have failed and got herself and her crew killed. She tries to talk out of desperation.

I absolutely love this movie, could have cut about 20 minutes out. I honestly think that was Howard’s pacing, his movies are kinda slow paced. So I expected that a little. But loved this movie. As for Maul, they are setting up other movies and including solo 2.

Francisco Mauricio Instead of Solo 2, he’ll appear in other anthology films like the Boba Fett Movie and the rumored Lando movie could work as a pseudo-Sequel to Solo. The Fett Movie could tie in with the Maul thing more, maybe Fett gets hired by Maul and Qira for something?

Kristian had some serious nitpicking lol but I see where he’s coming from. However, Han speaking Wookiee isn’t just for comedic effect. We’re clearly shown that the troopers are watching them, he couldn’t spill out the plan with them watching (plus it probably makes them think Han is even more of a dumb coward by actually trying to talking to this “beast”). Beckett had to cross Han so Han develops an even further viewpoint of how he is in a new hope. It makes his arc that much sweeter in the end. Also, Han shot first.

Really wasn’t expecting a lot of Kristians thoughts and feelings this time around, I usually line up well but Kristian seems more pessimistic. I didn’t have any preconceived ideas about Han’s early self or for what I thought the movie should do....so that’s probably the divide this time. SOLO is a solid 8-8.5 in my book, but I will see it again and reevaluate as always

Hans last name was always one of those cheesy coincidences in Star Wars. Like his last name is solo and he's a loner. It would be like Darth Vader's name being broody dark guy. I love that they gave meaning to his last name that fit with his story and that it was picked for him

I think I have the unpopular opinion but I thought Donald Glover was okay as Lando, nothing special. Alden though, blew me away. I thought he was amazing and he is definitely Han. He never once blended into the background. Loved Han, hated how he got his name. That was just stupid

Playmaker - agreed! Han felt like a real, bright-eyed Han, and not just a Harrison Ford impersonation. Lando, on the other hand, just felt like an exaggerated, cartoonish Lando impression.

I liked how casually han got his last name it wasnt some big moment same way he got his blaster it was just something he picked up along the way I liked l3 because everyone was annoyed by her including lando and she ended up inadvertently freeing a planet by just freeing one droid it was great Obviously han didnt know chewbacca spoke basic and he tried wookie so that made perfect sense I wouldve hated for chewies family to be on kessel, that wouldve been a huge cheesy coincidence. Instead it showed how beat down the wookie species is by the fact that chewbacca bonded with the one other wookie in minutes. "Tribe or family? Is there a difference?" Also gave more weight to chewie choosing han instead of his "family". Beckett and his crew werent good guys in anyway they tried to kill han in thr first scene instead of letting him join them, thats cold. Beckett just saw han could be useful until han tried to do somethin selfless. Also they were working for crimson dawn so the proto rebels had license to kill them at that point. The point of the beckett twist was that everyone saw it coming including han which is why it didnt fool him, beckett misjudged hans good nature. Bettany had more to do than jabba in the movies so what more did we want? Han still has years to become han from the original trilogy but he is getting there. The only issue with this film i had was maul lighting his lightsaber for no reason and kira knocking away hans gun because he was killing bettanys guy so that she could kill him?

I liked it, it was a really fun movie. I wish there was more of Han + Chewie, I had a smile on my face every time they were joking around together. It felt like it dragged in certain spots, and maybe it was my angle, but it seemed to be very dimly lit. However that droid was awful. Stop using Star Wars to stand on a soap box please. I had to stop myself from cheering when she got shot.

i'll say it, Krisitian was EXTREMELY nitpicky. His passion for Star Wars ruined his experience of this film. I consider myself a bigger fan of the Star Wars franchise than most BUT i went in with mild expectations and was surprisingly pleased! I actually want a sequel but every single point Kristian made was just pure nit picky and whatever wasn't nit picky, he missed the point of what the movie was telling. For once Kristians passion for Star Wars actually held him back and ruined his time, he's thinking way too much into this.

Genuinely had a really good time with this thing. Alden sold me immediately. It was Emilia Clarke's best performance outside of Game of Thrones. Donald obviously killed it, the Maul cameo was great! And I actually really liked L3 although I know a lot of people hate her, she was like the polar opposite of HK from Kotor. Better than Rogue One, although nothing in it beat the space battle at the end of that. And Han wanted to be a pilot to get a ship to escape the dump that was Corellia with Qi'ra. Needed to pay more attention to the movie Kristian half your points can be refuted and you shouldn't have expected them to stick so close to legends.
