33 min mark your mention of diverting player attention while you roll up on the random dungeon generator is so true. I had players go down an elevator I did NOT think they would be game to go down… so they had an encounter while I sketched out a few rooms and passages on a 3rd lvl. Suffice to say after they got pumped by a couple of giant spiders and one of them died, they decided to leave the cursed place and go back to the first level.

I can't be the only one suffering a sense of dark irony from this particular tomb ending in gas... But I agree with the commenters that there's got to be a hidden chamber behind that cloud. Discretion demands it.

The gas chambers are aspirational.

I admit I don’t do 1-1 time between sessions, but we do track time passage and healing times, travel times, etc very closely. The gnome fighter hired an armorer to make a suit of custom full plate mail for him - rare for a gnome. Checking the specs in the book (we use AD&D 2nd Ed) it would take a few months for such a custom piece. It gives the gnome something to look forward to. Another player has been buying up farms and hiring settlers to work them, at certain times of the year he has to drop out and protect the planting and harvesting from bandits and monsters. Playing with a calendar has added a lot of cool details (study time for the wizards, holy days for the clerics, etc). When a main character is out of action, that player will play a henchman or NPC in place of their main character.

I added that as a way to say kudos for using a calendar.

I think your reading of dead ends and secret doors is spot on, it never quite clicked for me before

Great video overall! Of course, no random encounters...the party was in full health and ready for anything. 😂 Take care!

Enjoying the Heck out of this series. A couple of pointers that might help going forward: - For beaver and other animals pelts, check out the Table on P. 27 of the DMG. - Not sure if your aware, but P. 102 of the PHB, under "Movement in the Dungeon', states if a party is on a known route, the rate is 5 times greater. - you had mentioned that many of your PC's are carrying torches. If so, Is it assumed they are carrying them in their backpacks over their Armor? And if so, are they just dropping their packs at the sight of an encounter? Keep up the good Work!!

Our magic users are on light patrol and pass the torch when they pop off a spell. Five times! That's the reference I been waiting for. Thank you.

I believe, the footnotes in Table I.: Periodic Check dead end entry Table V. C: Number of Exits referring to the footnote of Table V. D. are only referring to the roll chart where 1-5 on a d20 indicates a secret door. The first part of that footnote is only for Table V. D. itself. Otherwise you'd only get secret doors if the dungeon's corridors rolls back on itself.

Great use of the random dungeon generator

That's interesting using 1:1 time for the real world and your game. I've got a solo hexcrawl campaign going on but I have so little free time to play it that if I did the same thing as you the Nine Kings of Hell would have already destroyed the world by now 😂

Not sure that badger kill would count as single handed for Swolgar when he had his buddies right there with him

Dead end does state you can roll fornsecret door at 3 in 20/5 in 20. Edit: only on tricks/traps table that is.

I know you only use the 3 books so this may or may not be of interest. The dungeon generation system initially appeared in issue #1 of Strategic Review, it was created by George A. Lord and sent to Gary. The Dead End entry in the original table also refers you to a footnote on table V. D. but there are two footnotes (feetnotes? 😆) in this version. Interesting that he decided to remove it... The footnotes say: * A secret door might exist, and a search may be made if desired. For every 10' of wall space checked roll a 12-sided die -- a 1 indicates a secret door has been found, a 12 indicates a wandering monster has come in. ** If a passage or door is indicated in a wall where the space immediately beyond the wall has already been mapped then the exit is either a secret door (1,2) or a one-way door (3-6).

Let me just point out something: no one would question you canceling a game session here or there if someone were to murder one of your players.

You didn’t make any egregious errors, either with the rules or tactically. It was gratifying to see the lock pick attempt work, the surprise check succeed, and Swolgar take the beast in one mighty cleave. Couple of rules points. One is that when you’re in the 6-mile hex, your figures can cross 2-3 per day. Two is that in the dungeon, your figures can move at twice their movement rate each turn. That means that at a 9” movement, you can make 18 squares per Turn. This is still super slow compared to real world walking, but it makes sense in a dungeon environment. Tactically, let me suggest putting one of your paladins on point. They each have high Cha, high AC and a few hit points. Bring the thief in when it’s time to do thief things. (Ideally, you would have a half-orc or elf scouting because of the infravision and 12” move.)

Most of them are already there, and the rest are just a handful away. But we need a smallish haul before we can breathe a sigh of relief, and I'm not sure wilderness encounters will do it for us.

Youre burning torches to fast. They are 60 mins/6 turns not 10. Nevermind. You caught it.

I do it with an index card but I think something physical helps whether it's a die or a check box. @@iandstanley
