I am really enjoying this series. AD&D was my favorite game growing up. Now that I'm married and have adult responsibilities playing solo (like you're doing) seems line the way to go. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos

In my humble estimation, it is categorically impossible to feel negatively against anybody with chickens. A man with chickens is a man who every day is in constant company and influence of beasts of moderate behavior. Chickens are creatures of balance and equilibrium.

Just wanted to comment and say I'm really enjoying this. I've been playing D&D since '79 and never thought of going this (solo) route, like this before...

There's a wandering monster entry on Table I of the Random Dungeon Generation section. It indicates a roll of a 20 each time you generate a new section of dungeon (every 60' if a straight corridor, 30' with a turn, or after passing through a chamber, or trick/trap). Per Table V there's a 25% chance of a monster in each room or chamber. All this is on page 171. It could be the "periodic check" (as it's called on page 174) is not based on a specific, regular amount of 'in game world' time but in the 'game time' it takes for the players to proceed to the next section of the dungeon. Though that would appear fly in the face of the implications of Time in the Dungeon on page 38 or the sample dungeon commentary on page 98.

I remember those dungeons( at least mythical dungeons) are mostly pitched black, so bring your torches

To follow up on the wandering monster discussion in the chat: In the Basic D&D booklet (Holmes edition), says on page 10 to check every three turns, roll 1d6. A “6” indicates an encounter. It’s mentioned again on Page 4, in the module In Search of the Unknown (monochrome cover). Again with a 1-in-6 chance. So if this isn’t a hard rule it’s definitely a strong tradition as the Holmes Basic Set was supposed to be a lead-in to AD&D.

Another great episode. Here's something for the duo to consider, light sources. Don't leave home with out 'em.

I love your discussions, my group plays 5e, but myself coming from more of a wargaming background enjoy the perspectives and thoughts. It always gives me new ways to think about things to add or change in my 1st go at DM'ing. 👍

I think the real value of this series is displaying how you could setup the game the first time. Really familiarize yourself with the available gauntlet and rules, and find gaps in the set, to ponder and fill in ahead of time. I quibble in some areas of declaration (eg, "gary never told us how often to check for encounters." I believe it's every 3-6 turns (so half an hour or an hour, depending) or after a few other events.) Overall though, it strikes me a lot more like Catan, where we have a procedure for how to setup the board, and get to the action. EDIT: I see someone called ya out on the dungeon encounter interval. I know I'm a few streams behind, but would advise caution instead of bombastic declarations. Certainly, the organization of the ruleset is not great, but most of what you need is there, and if it's not there, making an efficient rule falls to you to decide what is fair.

What was the name of the monastery/abbey in The Beast of Averoigne (written by Clark Ashton Smith)? I think a D&D fan even came up with a map for it.

Hi. There's another reference to the wandering monster check being every 3 turns at the bottom of page 190 under City/Town Encounters. It implies that 3 turns is the "normal" frequency.

Bucksnort Abbey would be a great name! Rumor has it that the last Abbot was very fond of hunting and the remote location of the Abbey enabled him to do so at every opportunity! The song, "Nun Fight", by Paul & Storm (on KZbin) might give some suggestions for the Holy Orders that populated the place!

I ran a solo AD&D campaign for a few weeks last fall. Might throw a lessons learned video together at some point. Long and short of it is that the wilderness is extremely hostile to low-level characters that don't know when to run.
@TheJoyofWargaming Жыл бұрын
There is a heavy implication that you should ignore the wilderness until the players find their feet. Just run a few sessions of dungeon delving. It's not explicit though, and we can learn much even from a TPK.

Tnx again for this inspiring content. Never thought to use 1st ed for solo play. I binged the other lifestreams and saw you use your own random encountertable. Pretty nice. Did you know in MM 2 Gary has made a tool to make your own. Complete with comprehensive tables. Time difference 12hrs is a bit to much to join the lifestream. But happy enough to see how the prettyboys have fared in the Lickmatic Cloister of the Bofaheart ... really😂..

Sorry I'm late! I think you're sorted on the name of the ruin. Don't let me drag this into seriousness or boring real life, but a local family fave is Fountains Abbey. Nothing threatening there. Most that are close to me tend to be named after the place they're built. e.g Whitby Abbey. Over the garden wall from me, Nostell Priory. A bit dull? It's in Nostell... Great stream.
