I've been eyeing this pack for a while. Between your video and the fact B&H put it on a great sale, I made the purchase and pretty sure I will not regret it. Thanks so much for your great on-hands review. 🙏

As a regular walker I can say - LowePro backpack looks great. Nevertheless a separately purchased set of a typical backpack combined with smartly selected insert-photocompartment will cost 50-60% of what is shown in Leigh's video.

You are a brave lady Leigh, backpacking solo. I live in South Florida and 68, so no hiking for me. But I do enjoy fishing, photography, playing golf and travelling. Looks like an excellent backpack for all of you who love to hike and camp. I own Lowepro camera backpack and love it.

Thank you, Leigh. I'd use it hiking in the Cloud Peak Wilderness any month of the year. I started into photography as a supplement to backpacking. Same for my fly fishing. 64 years into my backpacking life, I don't go as far, but I still go and take a Sony RX100 and a superlight Tenkara fishing setup. I loved this video. I'm dreaming of my next hike. I would have liked to see your campsite all set up.

Very unique pack for sure. As someone who uses an Osprey Aether 65 and wishes I had a safer route to haul my camera gear I am thrilled at this option but it may be a while before I take the dive.

I love these types of real World videos. I wish you had weighed that pack cause you had a ton of weight with cameras, water for the desert, and a bear can? Holy moly and good for you! I have learned that backpacks are Like shoes and very individual and best advice is to try them on and have a return policy like REI. You cannot know how the pack will feel until you load it up, balance the weight, fuss with the straps and climb and walk. I tried 5 different packs before I found the one that felt the best for backpacking for me and that was the beauty of REI returns. The pack weight alone is a reject for me, but finding the balance between the weight you need to carry and the weight of a backpack that can carry that load takes a lot of trial and error and your efforts help others very much. Thanks very much.

As someone already mentioned I hope Raymond was nearby and though gorgeous country I would not feel comfortable on my own. Nice to watch this video especially with travel restrictions an all. Not sure my back can take it at my age but must be ideal for the serious backpackers. Merry Xmas.

I have a 30 liter Shimota V2 explorer and its as heavy as I can stand, i cant imagine a larger pack I would just load it down even more. I dont do over nights camping on the ground as I am 70, I need a comfy place to sleep and unwind. I have had several backpacks and I like the Shimota the best.

While I'm happy to see camera bag manufacturers addressing backpacking with camera gear, I don't think this is the bag for me. As someone else pointed out, it's pretty heavy. Plus, what I really want is a side access area to keep my camera in so I can grab it while my pack is on. That is what I have on my daypack and it's great for keeping my gear dry and safe while also making it accessible. I backpacked this past season with my regular pack and a camera clip on the shoulder strap - great for grabbing the camera for a shot but not so good for protecting it, especially when putting the pack down. I'm glad you got out on a trip - great to see you in action.

Your question of where we would take the rucksack (and it's contents!) has an easy answer: the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Although it may be a while before it's possible/wise to go there... But for my personal choice, I would prefer a larger rucksack, so I can carry more gear, particularly food and water. Although I could very likely plan my trip so that I wouldn't have to carry any water at all, in which case I could choose to carry yet more food and stay out longer.

Thanks for the review Leigh! With the pack by itself weighing in at over 7 lbs I don't think it is for me. I wish Lowepro would make the pack out of DCF instead of nylon oxford so the pack would be lighter and more water resistant. I would prefer fewer features that add weight like the top and bottom compartments. I guess what I'm looking for is something more like a Zpacks Arc Haul backpack that is modified to carry the additional weight of the camera gear and with quick access to the camera(s).

Carrying cameras along with days of food/water/gear is definitely a commitment not many would make. I carried the pack for many miles over many hours without issue. I did look, for years, for other packs that would serve the same purpose. Durability was what held me back with the Zpacks Arc Haul.

Looks nice, but extremely heavy for a 70 liter pack. The camera insert and extra zippers explains some of it, maybe worth it if a gear compartment and easy access is important enough. I like that the gear compartment is a bit above the bottom of the pack. Better for weight distribution and protection than the gear at the bottom IMO, but also necessitates an extra zipper and divider in the pack. A deeper side pocket would hold a water bottle more securely. It would be interesting if you can check the weight of just the pack and camera insert (without all the extra straps and pocket).

My problem is that I have degenerative disk issues in both shoulders and my neck, with limited range of motion as a result. I have some difficulty putting on jackets, no less backpacks. The backpack I currently use is difficult to put on and take off. My strength is fine as I'm a solid 6'6" tall and 240 lbs., so I don't think the weight of the pack would be the issue. I'll take a look at the links/videos you provided for further reference. Thanks for that info! Anyway, our next big trip might be to South Dakota to visit both the NPs and state parks. We just visited Yellowstone this year and Alaska (inland) in 2019. I love your videos as you are both informative and entertaining!

I know its bigger, but how would you compare its comfort to the adventure pack. Not sure if you used the new version or compare it to the old version. Not for what all it can carry, but shoulder strap and belt comfort level wise?

Lowepro and other manufacturers seem to design bags for hiking and backpacking in the south west USA, and I have yet to see one that can carry the amount of weather resistant kit we need for use in northern Europe in addition to a small (like APS-C) camera outfit. I have tried the Powder, Filpside Treks, Photosport etc....all have the same problem.

This bag is massive - by far the largest I've seen and larger than the other PhotoSport bags. It is a 70-liter pack so I was able to fit everything I needed for a few days, including a bear canister and many liters of water, plus camera gear. You might find that it will meet your needs!

One of the big benefits to the Lowepro for me is the water bladder compartment because I prefer to have my water at the ready. I put a 3-liter water bladder in mine (plus over a liter in bottles because there was zero water to filter in that area of the desert). :)

@LeighAndRaymond Yeah, true.....a lot of desert in the Outback here, staying hydrated is a No#1 priority in a harsh dry environment. Just as important as taking the right lenses, filters, etc on an overnight trip.

Happy Holiday's Leigh and Raymond!! So.... are you going to replace the Atlas packs with these LowePro's? I gotta admit, it's a lot of cash for a pack.... Over double what I paid for my Gregory 65L, Osprey 55L, and $140 more than my Osprey 70L. Really feel it's worth the investment (I gotta be able to tell Glo that I bought it cause Snapchick told me too.... HEY, it worked for all the camera gear :D )

Great video, thanks! I do have two issues with this bag...1. It is 7lbs empty. I have been looking at replacing my current 20 year old 75 liter pack for one reason: it is 8lbs. Weight matters on long trips. Lots of modern similar sized bags weigh about half as much, or less, but obviously do not contain photography compartments. I'm still interested though. The second issue is camera access requiring you to either take your bag off, or use a front bag strapped to you. Ideally, I believe the best solution would be to have a compartment that can be stowed in back but can be spun out and around from the side of the pack to access stuff, to avoid having to take the bag off, and to avoid having a front bag dangling out front.
@LeighAndRaymond

This is certainly not an ultralight pack and carrying heavy cameras while backpacking definitely isn't for everyone. That being said, I was impressed with the weight, considering that there is a padded camera compartment. Also, if the material of this pack was thinner, I'd be concerned that it wouldn't stand up to the weight of cameras.

@@JimHawkins1 Depends, on my last trip (4 day-3night), I carried 11 kilo of photography gear and a very basic camping setup consisting of my summer sleeping setup, a rain jacket and a 3 litre water bladder. I did not have any space to carry my cooking gear, but could easily have purchased the straps required to tie some more gear on the outside of the bag. You could, of course, remove the camera cube from the bag and fit a full camping setup

For sure this pack is well made but with a weight of 7 pounds, it defeats it's own purpose. It is only suitable for those who like to carry everything including big lenses into the backcountry and then staying there stationary (as suggested in the video from LowePro). Longer as 2 h walking I would never attempt with this pack as my knees start to hurt when I just think about. Carrying the exact same inserts with a cottage made pack (made in the US, even more robust but 2.5 kg lighter and 200 $ cheaper) seems way more reasonable to me.
