My Father has a small ranch below the Superstition Mountains, there in Apache Junction - Such beautiful landscape - He's been retired as an aerospace executive for quite a few years now and loves that area - I visit as often as possible - There once was an awesome restaurant at the mining camp but it burned down several years ago, had great steaks - I've done quite a bit of mountain biking all over the Phoenix, Apache Junction, etc. area...

Wearing heavy cotton/ cotton canvas is better for traipsing through the desert, it gets stuck less on prickers and doesn't fray and puncture like polyester and nylon. It's longer lasting. But it weighs more. I also find that when you sweat the cotton soaks it up and holds it which actually can help you stay cooler.

Maddie, I’m a fairly new subscriber. I’ve been watching KZbin videos similar to yours for years now and I have to say you are probably one of a very few KZbinrs that seem genuine and real. That’s what I like the most about your videos. My comment has probably nothing to do with this particular video but just my observation of the many I’ve seen prior to this one. Keep it up!

I never knew there are black bears in AZ. I enjoy watching these hikes. No nonsense, just getting out there and exploring. Were you using all trails as a map, or to help navigate? Also, did you come across any other hikers out there?

Sometimes I wonder if I was looking at the right website when I saw that about bears. Seems like they wouldn’t have enough shelter or things to eat out here. And glad to hear you like my videos! I used all trails sparingly to save phone battery, just checking where I was when there was a fork in the trail or it didn’t look like I was on a trail at all! And I saw plenty of people at the beginning and end of the loop, but in the middle, I didn’t see another soul for hours and hours

The mountains of the basin and range area of the Southwest can be almost as high as 12.000 feet. Black bears can usually be found above 6000 feet. The last grizzly seen in Arizona was in 1921 near Tucson at 8000 feet in the Rincon Mountains. It was trapped and killed by a hunter. The main reason for securing food in the lower deserts is to keep all the little critters away from your food. Packrats, coyotes and mice will chew right through stuff sacks.

Just a peace of advice, no matter how tired you are from your hike. Always set up camp before rest if you don’t you will be twice as tired. And stack rocks on your tent stakes if they don’t stay in sandy spots.

Oh I LOVE Arizona! We did Flatiron once outside of Phoenix and it was such an adventure! We went the wrong way and I can say that is the hardest hike I have ever done. I think a lot of it was the mental wear and tear of being like are we lost? Did we get off trail? Why am I free climbing a cliff when I am not even a climber? You know the typical things you expect on a hike 😂😉.

I don’t remember how much I went into detail about the mouse living in my van in this video, but the peppermint oil didn’t stop him, so I finally caught him with a trap that doesn’t kill them but just keeps them in a box! And some fellow hikers told me they’ve never heard of bears in this area!

Please think about carrying protection...no one who lives here in AZ would go out alone into the desert without some sort of protection. Women (and men) go missing all the time in AZ and are never seen again. You have drug dealers, cartels, weirdos and all sort of types out there and you just never know. And law enforcement is not close at hand, nor do they expend huge amounts of resources on finding the lost. We currently have two cases of missing women who will probably never be seen again, only their cars were found. And that's just the tip of the iceberg out of the 1000 people currently lost in Arizona (you can look it up) including Kyron Horman who went missing in the Superstitions in 2021, never seen again. It's a beautiful area but has many dangers, both natural and man-made.

NEVER store your food in your tent. animals will chew thru your tent to get the food. A bear bag is useful for more animals than bears, if you have a tree to hang it in. O/W, a bear can is the best way to go.
